Studio Trigger is mediocre. Their shows aren't great or that good, but they aren't awful either. I don't get why people get so fucking defensive when a show or studio they like is called mediocre. Most any other show, or manga, or game that has some deep flaws will still have people liking them and they'll try to sell you on them on their positives while not handwaving their negatives away. But Studio Trigger whiteknights do the opposite, they tend to overhype the good aspects of their show while downplaying or outright ignoring their flaws. What's wrong with liking mediocre shit? FranXX is about as Trigger as Hacka Doll, so not very. They provided mechanical designs and some of the animation for the action scenes.

The first 12 episodes are an absolute slog to watch on a week by week basis but work well for binging oddly enough. It kinda got better afterwards, and went full GAINAX tweest last week. Definitely not a show for everyone, but it's got it's moments.

It's about 4 episodes away from the show ending. The show just finally moved away from retarded relationship "it's not NTR bro I swear"-tier drama and is about to focus on the hard mecha shit. That ought to tell you what you want to know. Goro is too good to be in this anime and he doesn't deserve the shit he got.
To be honest, there were a few episodes that were pretty good when starting and halfway through, but everything else is so goddamned annoying to watch and subpar at best that it's not worth it if you're interested solely in mechshit like I was.

When you consider all of Trigger's stuff, it does seem like the inherently sexed human experience is a theme: Gurren Lagann is about becoming a man, KLK is about becoming a woman, and FranXX is about the relationships between men and women and what it means to be human in general.

A similar example is that if you don't like something you can say that it flopped. That would imply it was a commercial failure, but you can say it even if it was the biggest hit of the year. Just reject reality and substitute your own.
