I can dig it. I never actually played the DLC campaigns so I don't know how polished those were but the main game was pretty tasty and I liked the OST.
My only wish is that they figure out a way to touch up on the mission system, I almost sort of liked the distinct levels but the retreads need a little bit of pizazz, it got stale going to Oni Mountain a bunch of times, or that one windy shrine with the underground labyrinth with the same layout. If they could add a little bit more variety it'd be golden.

>Souls games are a good babby's first entry into action RPGs
For all I know there are action games more difficult than Souls games, but Nioh definitely isn't one of them. I think I beat at least a quarter of the bosses on my first try. I know for a fact I beat six in a row on my first try because I counted. Dark Souls III was significantly harder for me than Nioh, albeit for the wrong reasons. Myriad multi-phase bosses and attacks that have multiple animation durations and take a fifth of a second to complete are largely why DaS III was hard at points.
Ultimately my problems with Nioh are the lack of enemy variety, the content padding, the grinding incentives, and the setting, story, and characters being pretty dull. The first three issues especially are worse than just being too easy. Nioh would have benefited from a lot of the time-wasting side content and weird "defeat this boss three times to unlock this character information" being cut out of the game. Sacrificing novelty and variety for the sake of quantity isn't a wise decision, as far as I'm concerned.
Nioh definitely has many features like the level selection, encyclopedia, randomized loot, etc. that set it apart from the Souls games so I wouldn't say it's a clone, a rip-off, or totally derivative. However, it seems obvious to me that the Souls games influenced the development of Nioh. The camera itself, the style of lock-on combat, the RPG elements, shrines and bonfires behaving similarly, the "bloodstain" system, etc. seem like a clear influence.

Nioh ends up being "easier" than the Souls games because you are so much faster and more agile. Nioh's combat is basically a faster Bloodborne but with functional blocking.
All of the various skills and magics also give you more opportunity to cheese things once you manage to unlock them.
If you played Nioh in high stance only with heavy armor and weapons and minimal skills allocated I'm willing to bet that that it would be harder than Dark Souls. Really there's just enough differences between the two games that a true comparison is difficult.

Pretty happy to see a second game. One of the things I think hold the first game back was that few amount of levels and their design. They were kind of lackluster, and going through them so many times just made their fault more obvious. Of course it probably was a consequence of it troubled development, so hopefully Nioh 2 fix this. Also more enemy variety would be great too. The trailer reminded me of Onimusha, what with what looks like demonic transformations and shit. I'm very interested in it.

The only problems which I admit are sitting in front of your screen for 10 minutes just so you get all the enchantments you want for your one piece of gear, and if you plan on running anything other than Red Demon/WotW set you're pretty much fucked when it comes to farming armor sets and their smithing texts. I ran a ninjitsu build and thankfully there's a moderate amount of revenants who ran the Iga Ninja set because the smithing text drop chances are by far the lowest in the Dojo missions. I later switched to Dragon Ninja set and I had to farm Jin Hayabusa for about an hour so I can finally get the smithing text for the fucking Hayabusa Kusarigama. They're responding to your shitty argument you idiot. You act like the "management" is something that takes fucking forever to do and has to be done after each and every mission. When in reality it takes less than thirty seconds, and that's with a full inventory. Face it. You're hyperbolizing trivial things or things that are basically the same in any other game just to try and make it look like issues. You can complete Nioh without leveling up and grinding gear just like you can complete Dark Souls without leveling up and grinding gear. It's going to be hard as fuck, but you can still do it.

The devs have mentioned it in interviews that games like Ninja Gaiden, Onimusha, and Diablo had some influence in the version we got, but the most recognizable one at first glance to most players since a minority who picked this game up probably played any of the above will be DS. Nioh is different in a lot of ways, but without the souls games forming some simple framework to put all the mechanics it adds to the formula the Nioh we know would probably look a lot different or not have come out at all.

Run earlier stages, grind some levels, get some spells and upgrade armor and weapons.
Fun part is you can't easily overlevel yourself so you could just one shot the boss, because higher gear and upgrade levels only unlock after you reach certain points of game/NG+.

Forge and soul match for the most optimal gear you can and take advantage of set bonuses. Choose the guardian spirit that best matches your build and level it up. Most builds can spec into magic, you don't need to invest much. This is for basic buffs and debuffs that make any fight a bit easier.

Red Demon, Basically Red Demon/WoTW were the end all be all sets until Way of the Demon and even then they're part of a lot of mixed sets provided you get your Yasakani
I hope this time around they balance things better, they nerfed a lot of fun builds far too late in their life so by the time it got a PC port, all I ever saw anyone do was LW Kusa builds. Killed a lot of fun there.

Do not soul match at early levels. The price gets insane later on if you keep soul matching early game gear.
It's better to just use w/e drops until you hit Divine tier gear, just make sure your encumbrance is A/B so you don't burn Ki like a lardass. There aren't any good sets between Red Demon til you hit Divine, so just use some pieces from that + Fire Dog (or w/e guardian you like really) and you're set.
b34b7e No.14988342
>>14988277
Dubs of truth. I played my first playthrough blind and soul matching is a huge waste of money. The best route is to go the noob way and just get shit from Revenants, Red Demon armor if you're running light armor or Warrior of the West if you're running medium. You really shouldn't use heavy armor early on.
In short, the only thing you should use the blacksmith for before you hit Way of the Strong is offloading your crap and reforging a particularly garbage enchantment on a piece of gear, but you shouldn't get too attached to it as it'll get obsolete after 2 main missions.
After you get to NG+, then you should really give a lot of thought to your build (also a good time to buy a book of reincarnation) and what sets you will want and what enchantments you want and hope that you also get a piece of gear with a good inheritable enchantment so you can soul match it onto your primary weapon. Just make sure that they don't have the same kind of enchantment or it'll go to waste. For example you can't make your weapon inherit Change to Attack (Dexterity) if it already has Change to Attack (Heart).

As much as I liked the game, I haven't replayed it because I've never been much for NG+ or similar mores, and making a new character feels pointless and punishing because it's just William again and so many of the abilities I got used to fighting with would have to be unlocked again. It's not like Souls games where I can make a new character any time and never feel like I'm missing something by starting over.

I think your explanation of why Nioh seems easier than Dark Souls was very thoughtful and makes a lot of sense. However, despite that explanation, I don't think it's improper to say Nioh is easier than Dark Souls III. I could say Pikmin is easier than Nioh and it would still be true despite them being totally different games. In any case, I'm not really that bothered about the relative ease of some of Nioh's bosses. The padding, grinding, and lack of variety are really what mar what would otherwise be an excellent game.

Bottom line is this: Nioh saw what Miyazaki was trying to do with souls, achieved that, and then some.
In terms of deep action gameplay that rewards skill, good RPG mechanics, and actual weapon/skill diversity, Nioh has Miyazaki beat. He cannot recpver from this.
b4e4da No.14990441
From the interview with director Fumihiko Yasuda:
On his goal for Nioh 2…
Yasuda: “My goal for Nioh 2 would be a natural evolution, not a dramatic change or deterioration. In the first title, although we were very happy with how it was received, there were things that we could not have accomplished at the same time. So I’d like to strengthen what we did well, while at the same time fix some of the issues that we couldn’t do in time. That’s what I’d like to see happen in Nioh 2.”
On lessons learned in the original Nioh…
Yasuda: “Team Ninja is known for creating action games, but Nioh on the other hand was our first action RPG. So I’d say that in some of the game balancing and RPG departments, as well as some of the updates, there were certain issues that players might not have necessarily been happy with, so that’s something I’d like to improve upon and do better this time.”
On Nioh 2‘s story connections with the original Nioh…
Yasuda: “Yes, it ties in with the story of the first game—like the time and setting, those we will reveal in the days to come. But while I feel that those who have never played the original Nioh can enjoy the story, people who did can even more so enjoy it.
“And this is just sales talk, but Nioh is on sale right now, so we’d like to invite people who have never tried the game before to give it a try.”
On how feedback from the first game influenced development on Nioh 2…
Yasuda: “We did two demos before the first Nioh was launched, and we’re truly grateful for all the feedback from our fans. But having said that, after the game launched, one of the biggest requests that we had was character creation. And that’s something we’re going to implement in Nioh 2. Players will definitely be able to customize all the details, including gender and race.”
WE
On what sets Nioh apart from other third-party action games…
Yasuda: “In general, I think it’s the close quarters combat system. We have certain elements that are very uniquely Japanese, such as the ki pulse and the weapon stances. In addition to that, maybe the fact that both the player and the enemy have a stamina bar. That’s probably something unique to Nioh.”
On the teaser trailer…
Yasuda: “Players can probably tell that the next protagonist actually possesses the power of yokai. We’ve seen samurai-versus-yokai and samurai-versus-samurai before, but this time around we’re going to have yokai-versus-samurai and yokai-versus-yokai as well, so you’ll be able to feel some of the yokai skills and moves, which should bring the action system to the next level.”
On the most important thing the team needs to get right with Nioh 2…
Yasuda: “First of all, as a masocore game, we’ll make it satisfying again, but in that we want to have more satisfying deaths for players. And while Team Ninja will do its best to bring everybody the best product, we don’t want it to be just our subjective opinion. So as we did with Nioh, we’ll release a free demo to for everyone again to get feedback and make this game right.”
And a message to fans…
Lee: “First of all, we want to thank everyone for making Nioh a success. And having said that, I think just to kind of draw a comparison of where we were and where we’re at, I think with Nioh it was our first time getting into that genre. And to be quite honest, as part of our team, we were a little bit cautious and it was sort of trepidatious in that sense. I think this time around, with the experience that we gained, and obviously all the encourage and support that we have, we’ve gained a lot of confidence as well. And thinking back, there were a lot of things that we didn’t get to do. But this time around, I guess the simple way for me to put this is, the glove are off, we’re going to go in hard. And so I hope the fans are ready for it, because I think this experience is going to be close to what we really had in mind. So I can’t wait for you guys to play it.”
I sat out of the first game because it was too much historic reenactment for my tastes, game is advertised on the premise of fighting youkai and then it's all "now fight famous Sengoku Jidai name #53 to #76". Hopefully this will give history the finger and be its own thing.

I don't feel this is necessary. I liked William as a character and the costumes worked fine if I wanted to look at someone else. I hope this isn't to the exclusion of the protagonist actually being a character rather than a empty shell for the player to self insert as. Loli Oni would be cool though.

I started with an Odachi build and kept a Kusarigama on the side but as I played fell into a full on ninja build and replaced my Odachi with Tonfa. People generally don't like the Tonfa but it's got my favourite move set and there's a set that has explosions in the second DLC. It dealt fire damage through the explosions and I could put another element on the tonfa themselves and potentially inflict confusion on bosses. I think I later dropped the extra element for more optimal damage later on but the tonfa/kusarigama ninja build was my favourite.
