Fuck I love this game. The music, the story, the characters, airship battles, finding discoveries and new crew members. Just everything just makes you want to immerse yourself in the world of arcadia. And even with its flaws it's still great. The story is cliche as hell but it does the cliches in such a fun away that you're willing to ignore them and keep playing the game. I wish an HD remake would happen because it would look really cool on a modern engine but thankfully a bunch of guys are for the gamecube port making a mod that makes the textures look as pretty as dolphin allows them to be.

Skies of Arcadia has a seemingly generic JRPG plot and yet it stuck with me as a unique and memorable game. I've been meaning to give it another playthrough since I finished the gamecube version when it first came out. It has been a long time.

How about no. A rerelease combining the benefits of both versions, sure (game does have availability issues, at least as far as "official" access goes; emulation and modded systems are thankfully still a thing), but I'm not sure I'd trust modern Sega with a remake or even a graphical "remaster".

But yeah, a good game.

Don't have much to contribute OP, but agreed so bump.

Plenty of great midbudget Japanese games still get made. Recently they've been ignored by /v/ and normalfags because 3DS was a common platform for them, although with 3DS on its way out I'm not sure where they're publishing now.

The fact it ends with what happens next for every character that lives leaves very little room for a sequel. Only way there could be more is a spiritual successor or set years into the future when all the current cast have died of old age and their grandkids or great grandkids are now the new cast

431cfa No.14961560

Actually, if a remake happened SJWs would bully the devs to remove that "creeper" scene to be removed from all versions of the game because they can. As for modern 3DS games it's a landmine of current year censorship. You have to be careful which titles you get if you buy. Localized versions are infamous for blocking updates from Japanese versions of games too. Probably safer to CFW and translation patch Japanese ROMs.

It's one of the best JRPGs ever, and in my top 3 games of all time. However, a current year remaster would absolutely destroy it with the poz, so please, please, leave it be.

My biggest fucking gripe about this game is random battles during airship scenes. I tried to replay this recently to get all the discoveries and im flying around trying to get them and its just god damn fucking battle after battle. Random battle systems have never been good, but they are manageable when travelling from point A to B, but anytime random battles are included in sections in which you need to explore or solve puzzles they are absolutely abysmal and it's hard for me to recomplete a playthrough of Skies because of it

bb030e No.14963293

Not to be an asshole, but it's this exact attitude that has made midbudget Japanese games so rare these days. 3DS was a popular platform for such games, so what does /v/ do? Refuse to buy them and hack/pirate instead.

It's the same attitude with the Switch here right now. Think what you will of Nintendo but the system has completely revitalized console gaming in Japan (easy example, Splatoon 2 was the first console game to sell 2 mil physically in like 6 years, even MHW and DQXI on PS4 dropped off the map very quickly over there).

Just my opinion but the rampant love for piracy on all the systems where midbudget Japanese games get made is a big reason we don't see more Skies of Arcadias today.

It's the truth unfortunately. Something happened between last decade that turned modern localization into propaganda machines. Back then localization was just bad because they didn't give a shit and for those that cared their work stood out. However ever since as soon as Gamergate or earlier these loonies have been doing everything they can to shit on localization and to push their agendas.

Now, my theory isn't because these post modern localizers don't care about their work because they do. They care about shitting up the locHowever they care about their bad localizations making the headlines of blogs and news more than selling the game because hipsters don't buy games. >Pretty good, high quality.

I think someone at either SCEJ or Media.Vision thought so too, because he got hired for character designs and official artwork for Wild Arms 5 and XF. He's not bad as an artist (I do prefer Ooba's character designs as far as that series is concerned though), but knowing about his past (he does at least use a different name to try to distance things) explains a few things designwise. Like one of Dean's alternate outfits having some faggy belly shirt, or Kartikeya having a blatantly visible murderboner.

431cfa No.14978361

One last post before I go.

Wish I had the screen caps, but the other thing to look at is 8-4's localization of Xenoblade Chronicles X. They knew the game wouldn't sell well on Wii U. So they over localized the game to bill Nintendo for more money because their contract with Treehouse says each localization audit is a charge. X took almost forever to bring over to the west and it had gameplay removed (character customization via bust slider IS gameplay). Sure, there's a lot of marketing mistakes with the Wii U in general and 8-4 and Monolith still needs to make money.

But hey Xenoblade 2 had a decent localization and hardly any marketing in the west and it's the best selling Xeno game ever in the west.

I know there is a decent market for good localization. The problem is, like good games, we're going to need to make our own businesses without current industry cancer steeping settling in. /v/ is too lazy as a whole to do this. I am a single anonymous. I have my own plans for multimedia and localization.

TL;DR I've been saying this for years. To save localization we have to become the gatekeepers ourselves. Eventually the SJW cancer will kill modern localization companies in anime and video games. So we need to be ready to replace the businesses once the industry amputates the cancer.

ZOG and it's feminist hordes shit up localization's because their own games just don't sell to the audience they are trying to brainwash, this way they can take the quality work of someone else (which people want to play) and with a minimal amount of effort turn it in to their own propaganda.

431cfa No.14978686

But let's get back to Skies of Arcadia or similar games.

I suppose if I was in charge of a remake or spiritual successor I would still have a battle screen with random encounters in a way. But the randomness comes from mobs spawning on the map screen rather than how many steps you take. Sometimes they spawn in front of you and you can't get away. Sometimes they spawn away and you have to dodge other mobs to chase them. I would also have a system where the more encounters you have with a enemy or group the easier it is to identify them on the map screen. You can't identify what they are at first, they're shadows or blobs. But after a while as they get closer you can see they'll look like enemies on the battle screen.

Also there was a game called Nostalgia on the DS that tried to do Skies of Arcadia. How was that one?

>Nostalgia

Played it. I thought it was alright, though not really special aside from the world map being Earth itself (with different flight altitudes having increasingly more difficult enemies, to the point of difficulty spikes the first time you can reach each of them) and being able to discover ruins and such, of which information you could turn in for rewards. Western release (NA, really; no PAL release) also had a game ruining bug in some prints, courtesy of Ignition, where the second part of a boss fight would fail to load. At least they didn't fuck the script that time though, beyond a few typos (compare to Lux-Pain). I do think it accomplished what it meant to (being a lighthearted throwback to an older era of JRPG with some updated mechanics here and there, such as the learn/upgrade system for skills) and for a 3D DS game it didn't look too bad visually, but didn't really stand out as what I'd call "great" amongst other RPGs on the system. Did at least get more than my $5 worth of enjoyment from it though.

Also the NA cover art was pretty damn bad compared to the original. The Japanese one for it ("Winds of Nostalgio") fit the vibe perfectly, whereas Ignition apparently didn't think that would sell here and opted for generic angry anime protags. I've been fiddling with trying to make a hybrid cover, putting the JP background in with the American name/labeling over it, but it's just about impossible to find a good transparency of Ignition's logo from the time.

Shame Sega cheaped out there, when other companies like Bamco wound up springing for double discs for the likes of Tales of Symphonia and Baten Kaitos, but maybe they didn't have faith that even the port would sell well enough (which judging from prices where I am, it didn't). Also reminds me that fellow Dreamcast RPGs, Evolution and Evolution II, saw Evolution I highly abridged to be able to fit both games on one mini disc. That one was likely on Ubisoft and not Sega, though.

I'd expect him to draw well and be very dedicated to the franchise to say the least. He's been making its doujins for 13 years, that's not normal. He's definitely lost money because he didn't just draw for flavor of the month game/anime instead like every other doujin author in existence, so I don't know if he can be bought if given no freedom to design as he pleases. He doesn't seem to care about shekels all that much, so who knows if he'd even join you. If he did, he'd probably make the designs look similar enough to Skies and probably boost your sales. Creative freedom is guarenteed. He'll be hired during pre-production when nothing is set in stone. We're essentially making everything from scratch at this point. Lore, music, gameplay, everything. If we even do include voice acting since I live in burgerland I'll be using both my in house actors and new talent of professional or trying to be professional voice actors blacklisted from the Hollywood/Funimation clique. The game will not be exactly like Skies of Arcadia nor do I want it to be. It'll be the same genre but I know most of the mechanics will be different.

In pre-production he'll wind up character concept art which will contribute as much to character development as animation and writer larping with his deaigns in mind. His freedoms will be as restricted as everyone else working on the project: when everyone fights too much at a disagreement it stifles production so the director/producer abritrates his word as law to keep the project going. Once lore, gameplay, and themes are set with a unified vision it's time to set a budget and move forward with production. If he wants to stay on board after that it's up to him.

I think it's just the render style that's similar. Wild Arms had an existing history of blue haired major characters, at least in the earlier games before he took up the character designer mantle for it with the fifth game: Rudy in WA1 and its remake, Ashley in WA2, and Janus Cascade in WA3 as an intentional, antagonistic riff on Ashley's character from the prior game. And WA5 being an anniversary title, it wouldn't surprise me if maybe bringing back the blue haired protag was the one stipulation for Dean's design (assuming he didn't note that aspect of the series history himself) beyond using his judgment so the cast fit the setting visually. Also not sure of if he did Kalas smut before or after his stint with Media.Vision, and I don't especially want to be the guy that digs into the researching of that.

>>14979062

I was going to speculate maybe there's a large fujoshit base in Japan that kept commissioning the pairing, but thirteen years operating at reduced profit due to lack of the source material remaining current, that speaks more of actual devotion and/or autism.

>>14979939

You could be waiting in line. Media.Vision seems to have him on call again, as he did some 20th anniversary art for WA in the last year or so, and might be part of the team making the mobile reboot (because Media.Vision doesn't own shit of what they work on, and Sony apparently told them that was the only way they'd get to work with the series again, as if they decided it's got no place on the PS4 or Vita as WA6). The latter assuming they didn't just commission him to put out a few pieces and called it a day.

Also worth noting that as a plus, while I suppose it's obvious where his preference lies (or seems to lie, anyhow), he can draw some good girls as well.

Polite sage as this is mostly off the topic of the thread.

Kalas drawings were before WA5. You can even see the date on the picture, 2004. There is also a bigger, more lewd bunch from mid 2005, so also before. I think I fapped to them the first time 10~ years ago. Considering the way he draws I doubt it attracts many fujos, too. It's way more masculine and realistic than they typically seem to like and considering the dialogues of his few translated doujins, fujos typically want more focus on feelings and love.

I don't really know how he's even alive. I bet he's related to someone rich or drawing is only one of his jobs. No way he'd stay afloat for so long mostly drawing a niche pairing for a niche franchise that's long since been abandoned by everyone else.

No, I was just remarking on the fact that there hadn't been any new Wild Arms games in a decade between XF and the upcoming Mobile Arms. So aside from putting out some official promotional work for the anniversary last year, he hasn't had much to work on with the series anymore until late because Sony wouldn't clear any new games (and thus new designs) to be done.

Color quality on your Avril image looks a bit off, at least compared to the one in my folder.

>I don't really know how he's even alive. I bet he's related to someone rich or drawing is only one of his jobs.

Probably the latter. Doujins and character design might be a supplementary hobby for him (along with artbooks; I know he did a pair compiling his designs for WA5 and XF, but unfortunately no one out there seems to have bothered with full scans of either, in favor of crops), while he makes enough to live off of elsewhere. Doesn't seem like he's done vidya work outside of WA5 and XF either, at least looking at what crediting I can find, so I suppose outside of what he was paid for those it hasn't really proven a steady source of income for him there either. Though, whether it's his own choice not to, or that he doesn't get hired for it, I can't say.

There's doujinshi made by authors that are about completely original characters though, with how well he draws I doubt he's had issues with money even so. The style is distinct, that's got to have made Nips more likely to pick them up when they noticed them being sold. He's pretty retarded not just making his own series with his own characters just based off Skies of Arcadia if they turn him on that much, that'd be way more profitable in the end if it picked off. Maybe there'd be an anime based on it right now, even.

Dunno about that but you can go underneath the clouds and back up again to avoid random encounters, you can also keep an ear out in the Dreamcast version since the game starts loading the battle before it happens, causing the disk drive to make noise. Go to the menu when you hear it and you cause the battle to cancel.

You're not wrong, but at the same time I don't own a 3DS or a Switch. I spend my gaming time on old games. I'm actually going through this one right now, and am further than I ever got on the Dreamcast version entirely because of the level of random battles.

Here's something else they could do: what the hell is wrong with releasing such midbudget games for PC?! Literally everyone has one capable of running such a game. They are willing to do remasters like Grandia II for the PC, so why not new ones? As long as they maintained control on the translation and did not let it get into the hands of (((them))), then even if they released on GoG they would still likely get superior sales than they would on some console. That said there's always going to be linguistic humor that won't have as much impact in one language than the other. Japanese puns is phonics based while English puns are word plays. It's the difference between insults like soup tasting like water and donkey piss. Exception is cultural references or traditions. Since the Wii when marketing deemed that video games are only for kids under the age of 6 years old. Project HAMMER was also killed because marketing. Most of the good localizers left their dead end jobs to freelance contracts or advance in careers elsewhere. Those that remained were due to crony connections with (((universities))) because literally no one else was a fool enthused enough with enough work experience and qualifications. The new localization teams translate however they want without keeping faithful to the spirit of translation. And you get assholes shoving their agendas into games for clickbait and brainwashing that parents simply stop buying Nintendo games for children.

The good news is we will see a rise of middleware Japanese games on the Switch. The bad news is those games will have to be imported because in the western eShop Switch is a pixel shit indie-hipster garbage dump.

There's a reason why the Switch is popular with soy boys, the already brainwashed, on social media. These guys buy a Switch to rub it in the normalfag's face about how the don't have one. Meanwhile normalfags drink beer, play CoD/Fortnite/Battlefield on PS4/Xbone while their kids play iPhone games. So the Switch in the west will adapt their market to the soy boys that play it while their wife has a threesome with Tyrone and Jamal, rather than giving niche Japanese titles with a new localization market a chance. So far the Japanese games are being localized by NiSA, NICALIS, Aksys, and Koei Tecmo, with very few exceptions that aren't pixel shit.

Dragon Fang Z is published by Toydea in the west. It's a rogue-like but with interesting rules and cute monster designs. If you get a western Switch you have to get this game, even if the translation is Google translate. It's something other than progressive meme cancer.

Again, the best way for us to save Japanese games in the west is to become localizers ourselves. But most of /v/ are lazy and blackpilled. I don't blame them. Still, I can only do what one man can. Get into the market with original IPs. Then grow just big enough to localize my own projects. Then maybe be big enough to help smaller projects get footing as a publisher/localizer.

>Again, the best way for us to save Japanese games in the west is to become localizers ourselves.

You're essentially talking about learning Japanese to a fluent level, performing a decent translation, and then learning ROMhacking so that your translations can be played. That is not a small level of effort. All for what is essentially a proof of concept.

>Get into the market with original IPs.

This is I think actually an easier strategy. You can get normalfags to download your shit on GoG or whatever. The other method you're catering to a subset of a subset. The group that both has the ability to play pirated console games and the interest to know how and use your patch. I wish you good luck. I do have an interest in such things, but I think I'm more interested in restoring figures like Johnny Appleseed back to their former glory because they are essentially forgotten entirely today. Without a common culture there is simply nothing in common.

Meanwhile the enemy inserts the likes of Karl Marx as an NPC ally hero character into Assassin's Creed.

I'm not sure if I would trust current retarded Sega with even a remake either…just look how they ruined the Shining force series overtime for example.

Before I played it, my top 5 jrpgs were:

4 - Chrono Trigger

5 - Final Fantasy VI

But after I played, it is:

1 - Persona 2 Batsu/Tsumi (in this order)

2 - Skies of Arcadia

3 - Valkyrie profile

4 - Xenogears

5 - Chrono Trigger

Because it's just that fucking GOOD. And I played it years after the gamecube release, on my Wii. I wish half of the jrpgs today have characters and story on the same level of those five. That doesn't mean of course that all jrpgs today suck, but when you compare stuff like the characters and story with older ones as such of my list you can see a drop in quality that is worrying by itself.

What I would really like to see is a prequel. There is more than enough lore in the original game to make for an interesting story. Doesn't even have to go all the way back to the great war that fucked up the whole planet. Decat's time period sounds pretty fun.

On Crescent Isle, both of them have a picture of Vyse on the desk in their rooms.
