It's harder than NotR, story is pretty cool, it takes place between Gothic 2 and 3, after the Hero leaves Khorinis. The Hero is only vaguely referenced and instead you play as Henry, you're stationed on a military island outpost when the orc war breaks out.
You join a warship as a marine in order to prove yourself and rise to the rank of paladin, but the game opens up other factions as well.
There's also an English translation (though I don't know the quality).

I have. I put 30 hours into it and restarted at chapter 3 because I was way underleveled, became a citizen and then reinstalled my OS shortly after making me lose my save. I will complete it soon, next few months. A very underrated RPG.

Gothic 3 was not great. Its map was way, way undetailed and it feels procgenned, quests don't have the same punch to them and are rather boring. I suggest watching Durmin Paradox's review, it's very entertaining, probably my favorite youtube review of any game ever and it's really accurate too.

Still one of my favorite games, I give it a playthrough every couple years, but the fucking fighting system is designed for keyboard only and that's just fucking atrocious, it's just so fucking trudging to fight multiple enemies, it's fucking impossible to position yourself without getting hacked to pieces or loosing focus of whatever enemy you were attacking, just at the very end, once you have a good enough armor and weapon, you can just tank through everything which makes the fighting less retarded but kind of fucking boring.

<Backstep/dodge on S
Turn on the highlight on enemy so you see which you focus. Spam backstep in fights with multiple enemies and get them to line up better and not surround you.
Take pokes wherever you can with a forward combo.

Can't get the game to recognize the mouse properly, it just increases the mouse speed to ridicoules levels which you can only slow down horizontally, and even then it's fucking hacked and delayed, can't find a fix for it that works, running different version and even through a virtual machine is futile, it just keeps fucking up.
But regardless of that, it was designed around the keyboard and having key combinations for attacking, and that's just attrocious and not fun at fucking all, it's not fun to akwardly step back while your enemies continually spam attacks that you can only dodge if you use a mouse due to the fact that the key combination that you used to attack makes it impossible to dodge for just long enough to get hit. I get the point of progression and some enemies fucking you up in early game that's fine, but there isn't that much more room for improvement, you continue to awkwardly hobble through fights while your damage and attack speed increases so you can finish them more quickly. Piranha Bites sucks at fighting systems, Gothics system is shit, Risens system is shit, and Elexs system is a whole different level of garbage

That's weird, I haven't had those issues at all.
I had the opposite problem where maxing out mouse sensitivity wasn't enough and I had to increase the dpi of my mouse.
Which Gothic are you talking about? I know for a fact it worked fairly well in 2, don't recall if I played 1 the same.

Yes, it is the proper one, but who the fuck knows how many programmers it really has left. I don't know who's saying the truth about having everyone on board. Logically if I were modding a big project for free, I'd definitely choose to help the guys with the VAs, so I'm inclined to believe them but who knows, maybe the lead guy is so awful they don't want to be around him. Either way their progress from a few months is gone and some left their ranks, even if the number is likely small. One more drama with the project and it's going to be too fractured to come out.

Have you? 99.9.9% of the times in 2 you're better off trying to get that orc/whatever stuck on geometry while you pepper him with bolts. Using bow is considered cheating since it's even better. NotR tries to mix it up but against anything remotely matched it always comes down to circle around and try to catch him while he does the same. 1 had one of the worst auto lock systems I've seen on PC or beyond.
Combat in 3 worked amazing when it worked Attacks string into organic combos, different weapons have different speed, reach and heft that are only remotely impacted by your skills. So no lightsaber tier when you reach one handed proficiency in the 300s+. Of course 99.9% of the fags died to those boars in the unpatched version and never experienced some of the nuances like morale, different opponent behaviour or more advanced fights.
