Generally i think older games tend to do much better in this regard. Take Dino Crisis for example, has great atmosphere throughout.

Thief has the best atmosphere of any game by far in my opinion. The sound design is completely unmatched even to this day.

One of my favourite examples of a really strong atmosphere is Soul Reaver 1. The barren wastes, abandoned cities and toppled cathedrals drive home the idea that you're exploring a world defiled and dead. Despite being dated by today's standards, I think it successfully captured a similar post-civilization feeling that the first Dark Soul carries so well.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R: SOC is the best by far imo, I'll never forget the dark stormy night that boars ran into a minefield near me leading to complete panic as I tried to figure out why the night was exploding around me.

The best part is that isn't a scripted event, it just happened.

The only cyberpunk future I want is the one where I can make my brain replace all real-life textures, objects and sounds with low-resolution/-poly/-fidelity analogues similar to Half-Life.

You can’t completely disable the texture compression so “perfect” unfiltered textures are impossible anyway.

Elite Dangerous.

The game itself can become boring after a while and it can be a grinding (i never play it in really long bursts, just from time to time), but the space atmosphere is great imo. Love it. Really makes you feel like you sit in a spaceship in outer space.
