I've yet to understand how this is supposed to be played.
Usually I'll go down several floors, getting down to about 10-12 at most and the first few levels are relatively easy.
However as I progress, the difficulty seems to increase far faster than my own power, and sometimes there's even spikes of it, with multiple creatures spawning all together, several encounters in a row against groups, etc.
Judging from the whole "train skills" gimmick, you'd expect that grinding some XP to progress would be the idea but going back to previous levels, they are empty and barren so no grind for you, which means you just have to build your character "right" from the start, whatever that means.
Worse still is reading on the wikia about the formula for DV and PV regarding armor. Do you really need something that complicated to make armor defend you and using some factors to change how effective it is? All it does is make it incredibly obtuse!
If I get a full plate and start considering "should I wear this?", I shouldn't have to solve equations to figure that out. As it stands, I have no idea how much strength I need to make full plate a better choice than chain mail, for instance.

Caves of Qud is pretty good. Saw it recommended in one of these threads and gave it a try.
The HUD is a bit basic but solid, however the theme, the world, the factions and NPCs and the gameplay are really nice. You have a freeform way to build your character with several powers and skills that change how you play the game and using psychic powers is a blast. Literally.
