What are some game series that have a surprising lack of certain spin-offs?

I'll go to Pokemon as an example. You have

>Puzzle Spin-offs (Pokemon Puzzle League)

>A Trading Card Game (Pokemon Trading Card Game)

>A (kinda) fighting game (Pokken)

>An on-rails photography game (Pokemon Snap)

>A pinball game (Pokemon Pinball series)

>A virtual pet game (Hey you, Pikachu)

>A tv watching simulator (Pokemon Channel)

>RPG games (Stadium, Colosseum, Battle Revolution)

>Circle drawing (Pokemon Ranger)

>AR games (Pokemon Go)

>Simple action games (Mystery Dungeon series and Rumble)

>Strategy games (Pokemon Conquest)

So there are a ton of spin-offs, and a lot of them are weird and don't quite fit any genre too easily. But even with all these games and series, you don't have any examples from a number of genres that are usually no-brainers for spin-offs. For example:

<No minigame collection/party games

<No racing games

<No platformers

<No sports games

You'd have to be braindead to develop a pokemon racing game.

The real reason why pokemon doesn't have a focus on major spinoffs is that nintendo is terrified that a major spinoff will be so good that it will make people never want rehashed main series entries that cost peanuts to make.

For instance, imagine an open world type of game that features a large variety of pokemon living out in their natural habitat like all of those dinosaur open world clones. Even if a pokemon spinoff game was barebones when it comes to features, it would sell like crazy because people have wanted a game with that much interactions with pokemon. Pokemon Snap was a peek into that even though it's just the same animations over and over and is basically an on-rails theme park ride. And let's not forget that nintendo consoles are light on the hardware power.

Nintendo is the only company that allows tons of cynical cash grab spinoffs. Most companies would be horrified at the prospect of damaging their IP, but that just doesn't happen with nintendo's cradle to grave fanbase.

I looked up gameplay for it and wouldn't really consider it to be a conventional racing game by any stretch of the imagination. You can only play as Pikachu, you're trying to go between multiple points in a non-linear fashion, and it's crippled by being gimmicky DS shit. Guess it counts, but even then it barely ticks that box.

I dunno, I feel like it could work

>choose from a list of smaller pokemon (pikachu etc) for the rider

>then choose a racer pokemon to ride (tauros, rapidash, pidgeot even)

>could end up being like diddy kong racing where you can have people racing on land, on the sea, and in the air all at the same time on the same course

>each pokemon has their own moveset

>can pick up two different kinds of powerups (one for riders, one for racers) on the track that both can give you a number from 1-4

>whichever number you get is the move that you can use (pikachu gets powerup 1, can use the move in slot 1 which could be thundershock to zap forward or behind)

>maybe have combination moves for the rider and racer if you get two compatible powerups at once

>then integrate it with muh new pokemon switch version so you can import your shiny celebi riding your shiny articuno from the bank

>Puzzle Spin-offs (Pokemon Puzzle League)

Pokemon Trozei!/Link!, it's sequel Battle Trozei and Pokemon Shuffle would be better examples. PPL/PPC is just (a cancelled) Panel de Pon with a Pokemon anime/Pokemon skin.

<No minigame collection/party games

The closest there is would be the PokePark series has you befriending Pokemon by playing minigames with them but is still single player only. While the sequel does allow for multiplayer with it's minigames.

Sounds a bit like the cancelled Donkey Kong Racing with the small Pokemon riding bigger Pokemon.

While the idea sounds good, I keep thinking no one at Nintendo wants more (or actual good) competition against Mario Kart.

>I keep thinking no one at Nintendo wants more (or actual good) competition against Mario Kart.

You're probably right, but it seems goofy as hell that they have that kind of mentality. They're ok with releasing 4 fucking Mario Party games in a single generation competing with Wario Ware games, but for whatever reason they're under the impression that there's only room in the market for one racing game per generation. It's not like Mario Kart's sales are hurting.

>>14909407

That was one lucky Ponyta then.

d23f65 No.14912377

The Mario Party thing is even weird when you consider their is also Wii Party and even Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival. Then it turns out the dev team of both those games and every MP since MP9 is Nd Cube, one developer working on a single genre since 2010.

With Mario Kart, yeah Nintendo has had other racing titles like on the Wii for example there is ExciteTruck (launch title), the strangely NA exclusive sequel ExciteBots, WiiWare exclusive Excitebike, Donkey Kong Barrel Blast (originally GCN and used the DK Bongo Controller before delays), all these were made by other devs. It's still annoying that Nintendo themselves doesn't seem to want to work on anything but Mario Kart, no Wave Race, no 1080 Snowboarding, no F-Zero.

If Punch Out could come back on the Wii with the reason for a new game existing being "using (optional) motion controls to punch" why can't F-Zero with come back with "online multiplayer and user made track sharing" to justify a new game?

>What game series have such a lack of originality that it will create 10,000 spin-offs to shekel out to cok sucking fanboys.

>Lets brain storm even more ways for Nintendo to over-saturate there IP

Lets not. If EA did what Nintendo has done with Pokemon you'd be cynically laughing by now.

Zelda has gone fairly unexploited over the years.

You have Four Swords, which is more a variant of traditional Zelda gameplay than a full blown spinoff, Hyrule Warriors which is more a Dynasty Warriors spinoff, Crossbow Training and the Tingle games, which are all pretty low key affairs.

No Princess Zelda game. No Zelda fighting game, RPG, strategy game, horse racing, pinball.
