The characters in Mario are all just actors anon. They play different roles depending on the story of the play/movie/game they're in.

Miyamoto's own comparison was the old Popeye cartoon he loved as a kid. Bluto was the villain but he would have a different role or job in the story depending on the episode, and sometimes even teamed up with Popeye depending.

I can't recall exactly, it's one of those old VHS tapes they had in the kid's ward of the hospital when I was sick as a kid, but I'm pretty sure there was an episode where the two of them were fighting over Olive Oil and while they were busy Olive Oil was on the sidelines and getting wooed by a foreigner/black man, and when Popeye and Bluto saw this they both dropped what they were doing and teamed up to fight the darkie.

This was one of the old old cheap bargain bin VHS tapes before DVD was even a thing (I think the SNES hadn't even come out, or had just been released at this point), back when such racism, while not endorsed, wasn't memory-holed out of existence, and the old racist WB cartoons could still be found every now and then.

Can't find the specific one I'm talking about (I may have even mixed it up with other stuff I saw when I was a kid) but there is this episode where Popeye and Bluto are working together as part of a moving company before they start fighting over Olive, and I found reference to a since-memory-holed episode where Bluto and Popeye teamed up to fight the Japanese, funnily enough, during WW2.

Anyway, they take on the role they need to in whatever story/skit they're acting out, just like the Mario characters do (even if they are frequently typecast).

I don't know when that was confirmed, but I know that I killed him in the first game because I thought he deserved it, but when I started playing as him and found out about his mom I had a shitty realization.

While I always enjoy this trope I think it has been getting overused as of late.

Slightly somewhat related, what I don't like is how over time the Main Nemesis get's less antagonistic over time because of the constant introduction of badder villains of the week that they have to team up to beat. Bowser and to a lesser extent Eggman come to mind. While it's cool sometimes when they team up with the hero, it's been overdone and almost makes them more rivals then archenemies.

The Super Emeralds aren't gotten in the canon endings of Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Sonic & Tails' canon ending is the one where you get the Chaos Emeralds but not the Super Emeralds, where a single Eggrobo rises from the rubble, foreshadowing his role as the main antagonist of Knuckles' story, instead of Eggman. You could say Knuckles got the Super Emeralds in his canon ending, but either way they're not important later, and it doesn't matter if they are because Hidden Palace shows up in the story regardless of what you do. The issue is that Adventure onward shows the emerald shrine be quite different, but it also has enough the same, like ancient murals on Angel Island. Notably, the story in the Japanese manual describes more writings around the altars that aren't shown in the game, and Sonic Adventure shows more of these. I figure Hidden Palace just contains one of several shrines on Angel Island. We see in Adventure 2 that others can work just as well.

"Classic Sonic" the character is technically not the Sonic from the old games, because due to the time travel in Generations, he has a different history than Modern Sonic. Modern Sonic never experienced the events of Generations from Classic Sonic's point of view, he doesn't remember doing these things before, so the timeline diverges at that point. Mania then only happens in the new timeline, and then he gets pulled back into Modern Sonic's timeline by the Phantom Ruby for Forces, and again, Modern Sonic doesn't remember experiencing the events from Classic Sonic's point of view. Still, we're clearly supposed to infer that despite these changes, Classic Sonic did experience most of the old games in his timeline as well. But we saw in Generations that his version of Sonic 1 happens at least slightly differently due to the events of Generations crossing into that time. Also he met Classic Tails in Generations, which makes their meeting different from that described in Sonic 2 and seen in Adventure. Mania referencing practically every 2D Sonic game though still seems to imply that they pretty much all happened.
