he's right though. taken as a resident evil title 4 is terrible and was the harbinger of death for the original direction of the series. taken as a game re4 is a dumb, silly and fun game with a satisfying power arc, good replay value and good production values

because it's a simple but effective game. No one's really "apologizing" for it. you can throw out the "it's good but its not RE" argument or whatever but that's semantics really. The game works out of the box, it's functional and has solid mechanics and enough reasons to replay it a few times and at the time it was pretty new and different feeling from other stuff on the market.

yes and no, they could have expanded on it's formula in a way that benefited the game but they went with further streamlining and sneaking co-op in. RE5 early concepts sounded a lot more interesting with things like having sunlight and heat working against the player but it all fell apart

I'm always curious as to if RE would have survived at all without RE4. sure it's been downhill since but I can't see the classic formula working well enough with the market making for improved control schemes. Obviously a large part of the "horror" aspect came from limited movement and actual loss of something for death, in REs case it was time player spent running around. I always feel that RE4 mechanics could work and they could keep the spooks by DRASTICALLY reducing ammo count and actually giving players a reason to try to avoid the enemies

just like Manhunt, it's the blandest game you'll ever play, repetitive, generic, very lacking in many aspects very flawed in many places, but you just can't quit it, becose no matter how you try to analize the monotonous shity gameplay tryiong to find why is it fun even during it's dumbest levels… it still is just fun
i could descrive the game and it'll sound like shit to anyone, but you play it and you just have fun, it's almost like magic
RE4 is the same in that regard, it's fun despite it's many issues

RE4 was originally supposed to be a spooky game where leon was dealing with his RE2 baggage. Some where it got thrown out for a more action oriented game because the team kept making action games despite production telling them what to make. This also resulted in DMC, but even still..

The success of remake and 0 hd tell me that resident evil could have continued with that classic formula just fine. The problem is that making a solid game with the old formula takes a lot of work and skill compared to cranking out a fun third person shooter.
Not to diminish the vision behind re4, but the re4 formula seems a lot easier to reproduce for today's devs.

Remember that those remasters happened after many years under the tps RE era, so it's probably that the fact that the people wanted to go back to the time when RE didn't just consisted of explosions and fighting monsters of the size of a city while doing acrobatic tricks in the air played a part on their success.
But I do agree in the fact that the classic RE style needed more thoughtful time, specially designing the puzzles and item location.

Silent Hill decided to reinvent itself with The Room in 2004. Resident Evil did it with RE4 in 2005. I can tell you which one I would replay, and it has everything to do with controls, and camera. Monsters, setting, and fun go a long way in addition to the basics.

I feel like the formula is probably a lot simpler than most think, make the key word "survive" and give players a reason to avoid confrontation and actually give risk to the players deaths so they can be on edge

RE4's gunplay is incredible, the guns feel powerful and the enemies' damage response is satisfying. Even when everything in that game is completely flawed, the gunplay still stands out.

Resident Evil is one of my favorite franchises and 4 was and still is a good gimmicky fun game with replay value because of the upgrade system and mercenaries etc. it was good at being something unique but it turned the direction towards action heavy and it's legacy is cancerous.

not really because the subsequent games in the re franchise never lived up to 4, 5 was average but it took the exploration element out of the game and completely fucked everything up and they focused on graphics and style over substance now they've gone so far as to favor style to the point when there isn't really any gameplay(I think 7 is a trash game that's just my personal opinon)

In survival horror games confrontation is meant to be avoided unless absolutely necessary. Enemies dropping ammo contradicts that design philosophy and encourages players to go full gunslinger in most cases.

RE4 being an action-horror game is why I like it so. Code Veronica was terrible. The light rail shooters were great, just not RE anymore. RE4 was the perfect blend.
