The way leaning is handled is what is revolutionary. Garrett has his collision model designed as a sort of snowman, to quote the programmers. This allows his body to contort around corners realistically, in thief 2, to contort over small walls, much like how you could bend over something in real life. The way its handled, how smooth it is, that to me was remarkable.
I really wish you'd get more specific with what you didn't like because the design is for the most part masterful, some levels still being the best of their kind, many of which have absolutely genius design direction. http://archive.is/QBADP

Although I like Thief, I have to disagree with this. Game mechanics do age and can be improved upon. It's like with developements in technology, some things just work more efficiently after a couple of years because of new breakthroughs in technology, and in the same way, some mechanics become obsolete or simply annoying to deal with.
The problem is that recently we seem to have gone backwards, so the games that were most developed are still probably from early 2000's at best and in some cases, even older than that DOOM and Quake are still the pinacle of FPS mechanics and all the newer games did is just improve the atmosphere and play around with their concepts a bit before reverting to beingg less than DOOM was

I think even in examples I've seen in the past, where people rail on things like tank controls in survival horror games, or even in platform games, they fail to see the reason why they were designed like that. They may chalk it up to the idea that people just didn't know better but I think the limitation is in the player, the developers, for the most part, knew what they were doing, knew what they had, and very often explored it sufficiently. There may be quality of life things like dark souls adding in using multiples of items, and may some day fix weapons colliding with walls while most enemies' do not, but that improvement over a mechanic does not invalidate the rest of it.
I want to focus in on leaning, where in Thief it feels remarkably organic. This was in a 1998 game where tactical shooters were still figuring things out, sim style games were still working on things, but Thief got the leaning perfectly. It always built into a maximum lean distance, could be stopped short by walls or objects, but has this quality to it, that games made 5, 10, 15 years later still get wrong. I was playing a Rainbow Six 3 game a few weeks ago and was reminded that leaning feels incredibly digital, like you aren't even leaning, just tilting your head. The one I played came out in 2005. Thief came out in 1998. 7 years later they still didn't get it right. It may have done it that was for some reasons, but even things like tank controls exist in those games for a reason, and much of the time the developers explored the possibilities with the mechanics they had very appropriately. Look at the charge in Spyro, you have move forward, turn backwards, turn left and turn right on the d-pad. there's no strafing. You can roll left/right with R1/L1, but when you charge? The tank controls click in perfectly. It's got this slow turn with the left/right buttons on the d-pad that work excellently with the physics.
I think aging is a bullshit way to put it, games do not change, they can't age. It's the players that are the problem.

>I think even in examples I've seen in the past, where people rail on things like tank controls in survival horror games, or even in platform games, they fail to see the reason why they were designed like that.
I'm not talking about that though, compare Baldur's Gate to something like Arcanum or Planetscape Torment which came out later. Although the mechanics are similar enough, Baldur's Gate just feels older as everything is far slower and less developed, the characters you take into your party do not comment on the events happening around them when they do in other games, you cannot talk to them as you can in Torment, the Quests at the very beginning are far less interesting and in general the game feels less developed than the ones that came after it. But you cannot blame it for it as it was definitely an older game, which doesn't change the fact that it aged a bit. It feels almost like a prototype for those other games which isn't bad, it just makes it harder to get into Baldur's Gate than into for example Arcanum. And although most old games are still fun to play, there is no denying that many of them have indeed aged, even something like Super Mario Bros, while still being a blast just feels aged when you play something like World.

There are some overly popular series which I despise to this day in how bad they are, despite selling a shit ton.
Like the original Tomb Raider games which made me puke. Empty sandbox level design, terrible gunplay, limited ammo, those fucking gorrilas, man.
Or Sonic 1 genesis when I didn't even have the spindash attack. I would have killed for invincibility frames and knowing ahead of time what's going to knock over my 100-300 rings I had just collected from the chaos emerald race.
Oh or those enemies I couldn't bump into till they attacked first(the mantids).
Or Sonic's disgusting lack of dexterity worse than a vehicle. Im both 2D and 3D games. And his lack of acceleration and lack of arsenal.
Might as well literally give me a Pinball and call it Pinball Adventures. Goddamn PacMan was easier to change directions than Sonic.
I see why Freedom Planet is such a fresh breath of air and why people enjoy Rayman over Sonic and literally any other mascot character like Sparkster.

The bullet time feature worked best in Max Payne because of how fast the enemies reactions were and how squishy you were. That and its much harder to shoot from a third person perspective.

since you didn't put any effort in… Half-Life is an objectively good game. Just because it doesn't fit the role of a shooting gallery, like doom and the such doesn't mean it's wrong design, just different. This is the kind of game that requires the playing to THINK about his actions, physics provided are purely out of necessity rather than eye candy.
