Stealth absolutely needs to make a return. The only hope right now is indie titles though, seeing as it's not a popular enough genre to get any AAA attention; not that one would want the watered-down experience any big developers put out these days. Emulate these bad boys.

I'll admit to that, but considering it came out before MGS and Thief, you've got to give it some credit for being playable. There wasn't really anything else to go on for 3D stealth at the time. I personally find the boss battles fun but ultimately they're easy to cheese if you just want to get them over and done with. They don't negatively affect your score, so it's not too much trouble. I mostly enjoy Tenchu compared to other stealth games because I like the idea of being rewarded for killing everyone stealthily as opposed to the standard model of doing your best to avoid anyone and everyone. Plus the voice acting for the first game is fucking hilarious, it makes me think of those old terrible dubs of samurai films.

The level design in Thief, and by extension the story telling, is really god damned good. The number of ways you can tackle any of the huge, massive levels, find all sorts of secrets, dead ends and little neat tricks like stacking boxes on top of each other and getting the most use out of your special arrows is great. It's also one of the few games where difficulty truly changes shit up. From something as trivial as upping the loot required and imposing a no death rule, to changing AI patterns, routes, sealing or opening parts of the levels depending on the difficulty, that sort of detail tells me there was a lot of love poured into the game, and it's a blast to play.
Also it might be because I'm a giant pussy but the first game can get really spooky when it wants to. Mostly the spiders.

Hitman 1 definitely wasn't great. It was clear that they didn't know what they were doing at the time. Okay so it's not as fun as I remember, but after getting used to the controls again I think muscle memory kicked in. The game must have left at least something of an impression on me for me to be able to jump back in on Hard and beat the final boss. Stay as close to him as possible and don't finish your combos, and if you accidentally give him the chance to teleport keep in mind the attack is blockable. The lightning is bullshit but if you're hugging him properly he can't hit you.
Tenchu 1 and 2 are seriously games I'd buy remakes of, if only for the controls. Maybe 3 as well, but PS2 games hold up pretty well seeing as that's about the era "modern" control schemes came into play.

Tenchu 2 is steps above the original. You'd be surprised how much giving guard/step its own button improves the controls. Absolution is utter garbage, its a linear third person shooter with """stealth""" tacked on. I haven't played the new one, but from what I've seen it could be alright.
For recommendations I would still say Dishonored 1, in terms of giving you a sandbox and a lot of cool shit to play with it is unparalleled by most other games. The sequel is decent but filled with kikery.
The Deus Ex games (both the original and HR) have pretty good stealth in them though its not as much of a "true" stealth as other games, if you like them though E.Y.E. is more of the same and extremely fun.
If you don't mind horror than the Penumbra games are good.
If you are really desperate you could give Monaco and Payday 2 a try, I can't really think of anything else.

Whenever I look at gameplay of this it looks far too easy with the character's ability to teleport. That's a shame seeing as I prefer to play an assassin to a thief, and the fabulous secret powers are what made Dishonoured a steaming pile of not fun.
