Are there any games where the "New Game+" mode is not boring to play? Whenever I try it on Chrono Trigger, I'm always too overpowered and breeze right through it. Any sense of challenge is gone and the game starts feeling like a passive series of cutscenes instead. The only times I still find it interesting is when taking on the final boss, Lavos, super early to unlock the special ending.

I think the Persona games are like this too. I quickly got bored with the easy dungeons and bosses, but still found the powerful Velvet Room bosses entertaining to fight. Even though I was overpowered myself, they still posed a genuine threat against me.

I guess that's what I don't like New Game+ modes in general. When they feel like they're piss-poor easy with no obstacles, playing them feels like boring video games movies to me. If there any games out there with a New Game+ mode that retains a sense a challenge, I'd like to hear them.

yes, it's called play a different game

Silent Hill 3 has 10 unlockable difficulty modes as you beat the game on the hardest difficulty, going from hard to extreme and from extreme up to extreme 10. Just don't be a bitch boy and activate double ammo pickup.

Been meaning to get into this series for a while now. My plan was to start with 2 since it was where Pyramid Head first showed up. But I guess since they're both PS2 games, I'll give 3 a shot as well.

>>14893226

But then that would make New Game+ modes in video games extremely pointless then. A lot of devs do like to include it in their games to extend their game's playtime. I just haven't seen an example of it being done well so far. They generally just remove the game's challenges and make it feel boring to trudge through.

No but I can provide an example that is also bad: Solatorobo. The game is already fuck easy, but I think your OP mechs carry over and you just take more damage. Too bad the bosses suck either way.

Dark Souls has the Gravelord thing where other players send shit to kill you. Resident Evil 1 Remake adds a zombie following you everywhere that you can't attack, or he blows up and you die. Any other games do this, adding in a constant, game changing threat to make life a living hell?

>>14893383

The point of New Game+ in the old days was usually not to present some new form of challenge to the players, though. It usually was just a way for the player to breeze through the game as an overpowered demi-god so they could do everything they didn't on their first playthrough. New Game+ was originally a convenience tool for completionists, in many cases still is. It's actually a new trend in most cases for New Game+ to make a new challenge for the player.

1dc216 No.14893500

The only purpose of Chrono Trigger NG+ is to keep trying to beat the game at different points in the story to unlock new endings. It's one of those things that worked way better before you'd just look everything up on the internet.

74ca6b No.14893512

Most games where different routes and endings are available in New Game+

Alternatively, something like Uplink where you can jump in and, knowing how the story plays out, prevent certain events from happening.

fe7451 No.14893674

>>14893177

New game plus in Chrono Trigger is supposed to be about you getting silly alternate endings by ending the game before you're supposed to OP. You need to be overpowered so you can do this. You're not supposed to play through the whole game again as a god.

>complains about being overpowered in CT NG+

>as if that isnt half the fun

I dunno why you're such a bitch, but stomping all over normal enemies and bosses that were a struggle before is a god damn joy. You hardly feel all that much stronger until you rush through the game again and you're like a monster truck crushing cars. I mean, if you REALLY want the challenge, you can just play the game new from the start and the only thing you'll miss is, as the others have said, the alternative endings.

Maybe you could play Radiata Stories; the new game for that doesn't let you bring QUITE as much with you, although you could probably just keep two saves since aside from the plot fork and the ally encyclopedia there isn't much reason for a new game.

>one dangerous zombie

Not a slow shambler, but a fast one at that. Would Definitely make the game very entertaining to play on a NG+. There would never be a dull moment with this fast fucker constantly running at you.

>gravelord

I'd rather not. Seems like an online thing to me.

Why do you guys think I'm so burnt out on NG+ modes at the moment? I just got done replaying Chrono Trigger repeatedly to see all the different endings myself. As influential as CT was in being one of the first to have multiple endings, I'm still kicking myself for not simply watching them on hooktube. Aside from how entertaining it was to fight Lavos early on, dragging myself through that challenge-less experience wasn't really worth it. It just made me realize that being too powerful really does, eventually, suck out all the enjoyment of a game.

>>14893512

Maybe. Depends on if the game has a route that's clearly more difficult than the rest. For example, SMT Nocturne had the True Demon route which made you complete an optional dungeon and extra boss battles. And Undertale had that Genocide route where the bosses are far more challenging.

If any game's NG+ mode can offer an even harder route than its normal branching pathways, I'd definitely consider it. Otherwise, it'll just play out like my Mass Effect runs. My initial Paragon playthough offering a decent challenge, but then my NG+ Renegade route being way too easy.

>solatorobo

I'm not a furry though, so I'm probably not Solatorobo's intended demographic. Other than that, they both seem ok from the gameplay vids I just saw.

Just grab a cheat engine table and activate perma-gravelord. It slightly changes your approach to a few encounters and works best in NG since DS1's NG+ is not even remotely balanced. You'll just fucking wreck everything while taking slightly more damage.

Personally, I'd recommend NG+ in either DeS or DS2. DeS enemies scale properly and the increased health in certain situations (like when dealing with Storm King) forces you to change your strategies. DS2 adds in entirely new NG+ only enemies to certain locations, adds new rings (sort of, if you didn't use bonfire ascetics), and most importantly: Fucks with the mimic placement.

fb3522 No.14894748

I heard the new Dragon Quest has a good NG+ that ups the difficulty and ties into the story.

3e2bb8 No.14894761

I don't remember if this was just post game or if it was a new game plus, but I remember "the worlds ends with you" had a really hard new game plus. I don't think I could beat it but that might just be because I'm bad.

That zombie is only in the mansion part and can only show up in certain rooms. He doesn't even come back once you go to the labs. REmake is pretty fun to play over and over though.

70a253 No.14899025

Kamidori's new game+ adds more playable units and a lot of autistic post game content, and being a VN style game with multiple routes you would probably replay it anyways.

the best "new game+" I've seen is in pic related. The actual new game+ is also great and has NG+ only content like the Kuro Blaster. Zangyou mode is the "new game+" but despite revisiting the same areas they are completely redesigned, the story is new and takes a funnier approach, has its own ending and additional stages. If you haven't played it, enjoyed Cave Story it's a game with similar feeling game play with more control over how you shoot but very different design. Progression is strictly level-to-level with minimal exploration. Plenty of secrets, weapon upgrades are great and varied, and the level design is fantastic as are the boss fights and music. I'd consider it even better than Cave Story, but I prefer the music in Cave Story.

9f1403 No.14899740

Do Platinum games count? I know stuff you unlock carries over to any difficulty mode, and you usually have to go through normal to unlock anything harder, but I'm not sure it really counts.

Can attest to Kero Blaster's new game+ being pretty cool.

That Not-Castlevania3 game they made to promote Iga's new game also seems to do something similar, but I didn't start the second playtrough yet, just entered the first level to see what it was about.

Lufia 2 has 3 unlockable NG+ modes: NG+, NG++ and Ancient Cave Mode.

Ancient Cave mode takes place on one island of the main game where you can enter a dungeon that turns the game into a sort of roguelike - all treasures and monsters are randomized, your party loses all equipment, levels and spells and has to acquire them as they go, etc. The goal is to collect all of the "Iris" treasures, as well as to reach the 100th floor and beat the final boss down there. There are a few items you can acquire occasionally that you can take out with you and then take back in on subsequent runs, so it's pretty entertaining. Plus it's got that Lufia charm.

You'd be better off just playing a real roguelike, though. Their main game mechanic is replay value.

Diablo 2? At least in as much as it's enjoyable to begin with. I really just want to point to that as an example of an alternative NG+. Instead of going back to fighting level 1 enemies at max level, the enemies start right where they left off at the end of NG and move up from there. There are lots of other games that follow the same pattern, Souls series is another although I find the difficulty curve for NG+ is poorly realized.

8ef969 No.14901125

Modern Tales of games generally have very interesting new game+ where you unlock ways to play the game that are very different (and more challenging) than the original playthrough.

a6a703 No.14901159

>>14901125

I don't recall Berseria or Zestiria having anything like what you describe. They did have NG+, and they both had unique features unlocked through the NG+ grade shop that change the game, but other than potentially the half XP (which exists so you can better manipulate stat gains), they are all there to make the game even easier. The latest tales games are slightly unique though in the fact that their NG+ resets your character level
