Remember me in previous thread making stupid posts that Project Babel (and ProjectBabel_Monsters edition for this particular instance) is compatible with bunch of mods that add champions/recolored enemy types and whatever? Well, i just checked thoughtfully this and no, it wasn't actually working and it was merely a placebo, since some of those mods also change ai behaviors. Good riddance i keep fucking JP Health Bar around me, its actually useful for debugging monster names just like weapon-menu is good for debugging weapon names.

Anyway, the point is that all true project babel monsters have "babel*" name tag, and obviously monsters without it don't work (because scripts rely on new monster types that they replace apparently). It goes way past that to the point i actually had a conflict i never checked with weapons of saturn i constantly use, by seeing that zombies were named "zombieman1, zombieman2" and whatever instead of babelzombieman. So i had to repack my weapons of saturn pk3 and empty ZOMBIEMAN.TXT script file in actors folder for Babel monsters edition to work with it properly, since for whatever reasons WOS actually changed them and their spawns.

Learned so much today. Apparently its easier to autoload mods seperately from wads, and just assign GZDOOM as application for wads, while entering paths for mods in autoload section of gzdoom.ini config file, and play with literal double click on a wad.

Before that i used like an idiot constantly edit my shortcut, which was pain in the asshole.

The only things I autoload are zEpisodic and DamNums, since they're universal. Other mods are handled through Bash aliases, with the actual mods symlinked to something a lot shorter. e.g.

alias doom_roch="gzdoom ch.pk3 ro.pk3"

Colourful Hell and Russian Overkill respectively. I can add maps to that easily too.

Well it is those types of developer I am mainly looking for: Mapper, ACS scripter and Sprite creator/editor

I am well versed enough in Decorate myself so I don't need much help for that. I already got 1 WiP map specially made for moonman doom but I don't feel "creative" enough to make further expansion/finishing it. The project has already 1 sprite editor which is really helpful, since I am not that good at it. Interesting, it takes Graf a decade for him to add another model format support. I can't wait to play a Unreal 1 mod for (((Graf))) Doom with proper weapon balance which is the only reason I don't really like playing Unreal 1 much. It gets on my nerves the stinger weapon is entirely useless against Skaarjs and even the damn Kralls because they are dodging it all the time. Yet on the hands of a Skaarj it is highly effective.

I just used the "cat" command for that "cat rename.png archive.pk3 >> archive.png", I just noticed it that konqueror can open the file just fine but Slade refuses to open it despite it contains the archive for some reason. Well, if you need more direct action, there's Descent 3. Its not as good, but its something if you need it. There's also the Freespace games which, while not the exact same, is by Volition, half the team that made these. There's also three 'spiritual successors' that are coming around so look out for those I guess.

Well there's three main ones. Descent: Underground, made by a bunch of fans who got the license from Interplay that's apparently recreating the multiplayer but it apparently sucks dick. There's Overload, a more true single-player spiritual successor by some of the original Parallax devs that is closer to the originals with closed enviornments, lots of weapons, shit to shoot, and all that stuff, but its also in Early Access. I've been playing through Doom 1 and 2 for the first time, and just started nuDoom. It feels like some kind of parody. Everything is completely tongue-in-cheek and ironic. It just comes across as obnoxious. The HUD and powerups feel like they don't belong in the game, like everything is some kind of simulation and nothing is actually happening. The original games were over-the-top, but not in an ironic or obnoxious way. It felt like they genuinely reveled in how fast-paced and violent they were. This just feels like some kind of Big Bang Theory casualized representation of what normalfags think Doom is like.

I know I'm late to this game, but how does that compare to the general consensus?

If they're going to go for the "teach the concepts not the language" angle, Doom is still better. Fuck, when I had to use GameMaker in my course, it still didn't allow you to make "objects" (from a programming perspective) without using the GUI. Object-oriented programming is kinda important to learn properly if you're going to make a game.

WADs are essentially archives that contain all your maps and assets for your mod. You manage the contents with Slade. The bulk of your game logic will be driven by DECORATE scripts and if you want to write fancy scripted level or environmental events you'll use ActionScripts. Syntax is a little weird but extremely simple. When you design weapons, events are tied to frames of the sprite animation. I think that about covers it.

Also while I understand why it's as it is, no source port is flexible enough for general game programming, and the *ZDoom* ports are a fucking mess of different and outdated frameworks, and needing to avoid breaking tons of badly coded mods, and show it through being buggy and labyrinthine. Brutal Wolfenstein 3D is probably the best Doom mod i've played yet. However, there are some issues. The modder apparently has a problem with Dr. Schabbs and Gretel Grosse as they are now replaced with a generic Elite SS wielding a plasma rifle and a blonde version of a custom female trooper that kinda looks like anime shit. It just isnt Wolfenstein without the mad doctor and Gretel.

Maintaining that is a thankless task. It has so much old and depreciated stuff to juggle and it's basically impossible to make extensive additions or changes without stuffing up some mod. That should be treated as the Windows of source ports. A new port with clean design needs to happen so we have a good base for future mods, and maybe existing ones will try and target it.

Its so shit at how its made. It even has very poorly made inventory and levelup systems that work through default looking menus. You spend souls on powers and spells. And on weapon damage. And there are like various tiers of different equipment specifically for that khajiit.

At least greatsword has power attack system, i give author that. But literally every sprite is made 4:3, so its not good looking.

I don't know what i expected. It lags as shit and sometimes dips between 40-30, and i have 1050ti with 8 gb ram. Don't think quake requires good CPU too, but i got that covered. Its just this unoptimized.

You know its funny, i fired up Quake III right after playing Quake Champions for few hours. And 3 is smoother, harder to aim because of better mouse control and its like QC actually has some autoaim shit on. Especially that concerns thunder gun. When playing Q3 after QC you start to "expect" being just as good at it as with QC, and you're not. Or maybe its just those stupid floating numbers doing tricks on me. Anyway, the mouse behaves totally different. And QC is fucking lag fest compared to Arena. I am not even talking about how faster the game proceeds to the next map, QC in that department sucks heavily because you have to match make every fucking time you done with the round.

What a fucking joke.

You can do mods with those engines, even with plain vanilla DOS. That's what the old Aliens, Batman, and SchoolDoom TCs are. Prboom can do a lot more too.

People complain about Graf Zahl a lot, but I don't see them actually doing anything about it. Otherwise you'd see more mods for other engines (screenshot was HereDoom for MBF, btw). Personally I never had any interest in Zdoom or GZdoom or any of their mods. Some people jump onto it very first thing and make levels that can could have run fine in those other ports if they didn't put in useless zdoomisms instead of a more portable equivalent. Then they're stuck on that engine, and maybe even a specific version of it. Ok well that's their problem. But often they'll release levels as "vanilla compapatible" and it just crashes unless you run it in *Zdoom. That's the state of the community for about 10 years now. I don't much bother with new maps because they're unlikely to work right…

No complex mod can work on a lowest common denominator like Dehacked patches so sometimes it's the only option. Also with open source there's no such thing as vendor lock-in. GZDoom supports goddamn FraggleScript, there's no reason other engines couldn't try to add DECORATE and ZScript and the like, or for other source ports to offer a more compelling modding framework that is of clean design, instead of a mess of interbreeding and mutation.

In other engines, that results in the entire level going crazy and the map becoming unplayable. This is the kind of thing that makes people not like ZDoom, because it encourages bad behaviors. Because then they release their levels are vanilla, and people get stuck while playing them. It kinda sucks to get halfway through a map before you find out it's not really vanilla compatible after all.

The reason why mods like Brutal Doom took off is actually a lot more interesting and overlooked. Brutal Doom added many gameplay mechanics that we take for granted and are sorely excluded from many shooters. The one that I would single out as the most addicting wasn't even perfected or done right in classic and golden age shooters. That mechanic is what I like to call shot placement.

Games that reward you for not just landing headshots on weaker enemies but focusing on either center or likewise the head on bigger enemies and weakpoints have shot placement. What makes it different from just landing a headshot is that not every weapon can do that, and some are better for causing enemies to absorb splash; e.g. using a super shotgun on a pinky and unloading rockets on a hellknight. Seeing heads splatter is a formality, but it would be extremely missed if absent.

Furthermore, if the gore was purely random, it would actually be pointless. Instead the gibs reinforce the idea that a weapon carries power. Effects that the player causes adds character to the weapons and tools that you use. Seeing heads disappear from one shot tells observant players to find out what the optimal distance is for making a one-shot kill. After repeating this, you're now trained to know the distance and are incentivized to be precise with weapons like the glorious shotgun.

Similar to how destructible environments are still not realized even in modern games and their associated popular genres, the desire to see a weapon do more than just defeat enemies is always a latent feature. This feature by the way, is in the original DOOM games. Therefore, it's asinine and hypocritical to call "more gore" style over substance. You should be criticizing the originals for their gore before doing the same with Brutal Doom for expanding on something that was always there.

Think about it, why does it matter that a rocket turns weaker enemies into piles of mush? That's just style over substance. Or does it actually add visual information that the rocket is overwhelmingly powerful on weaker enemies? Does a rocket always gib an enemy from splash alone - when's the last time you paid attention? Mods that expand the gore like Brutal Doom tend to add varying degrees of gore according to how you killed an enemy. Thus, in mods like those, the more gore, the better a metric you can keep track of for how much damage was caused when finishing an enemy. That's where style meets substance.

I'm not interested in how much extra damage an enemy takes or what kind of skilled trickshot was used. It's just boring details for me, much like how attempts at "realism" in modern shooters is boring. In the original game, gibs fly when a nearby barrel explodes or they take huge damage otherwise (like say via BFG9000). That's good enough, I don't need a scale that accurately reflects how much damage was dealt. Maybe if Doom was a game with few enemies and detailed combat, then ok. But it's not, except deathmatch to some extent. Instead you're fighting lots of dumb monsters, trying to not get stuck in a bad position and overrun.

Actually I played tons (as in thousands of hours) of Quake deathmatch and CTF in the 90's, which didn't have any of this special targetting stuff. I don't see the point, as the game plays fine already.

The ones that work with official DOS Doom, so historic mods like Batman Doom and Aliens TC. Chocolate has additional functionality to use Dehacked patches (EXE patches to alter certain data) and Deusf (a tool to address sprite/flat problems with PWADs). An example that uses both:

Chocolate Doom itself can be modified and expanded as it's open source, but really, you want a source port designed for mods like the ZDoom ones.

Curious to see how Crispy fares - it's based on Chocolate Doom but raises limits and has some (optional) modern comforts like higher resolution/framerate.

Can't remember if it has non-vanilla thing clipping ("walk on monsters") by default but it's a toggle in the Crispiness menu either way.
