>>14862094

The ideas discussed in the horror thread involved managing your car's fuel and keeping track of what parts need to be replaced/repaired. So for example, you might be at a safe outpost 60 miles away from your destination, and you now have to decide how far you can drive before your car finally shits the bed. You would have some sort of repair system similar to My Summer Car probably. You could also make choices like:

>Do I drive on the two lane highway, which is a longer route, or do I go on this dirt back road that is shorter?

knowing that the back road is in worse condition and probably has more spooks on the prowl. Alternatively, you might sometimes be forced to do something drastic. If it's a stormy night and a tree is blocking the main road, your only other option might be to drive off road through a nearby cornfield. And of course there would be spooks waiting for you in the cornfield that you would have to avoid as you drive.

A lot of the gameplay would be centered on evading different paranormal enemies that would appear to impede your progress. For example, you might be driving along on a rainy night when you notice Mr. Skinwalker watching you from the edge of the woods as you drive by. A few miles later, you realize that you only have about a gallon of gas left. Now you have to figure out what route you will take to put as much distance between you and the skinwalker before you run out of gas. If you run out of gas before you get far enough, you'll have to go on foot. There could also be different levels of difficulty that would be based on what kind of vehicle you drive. Easy mode would be a good condition Jeep or similar offroad vehicle. Normal would be a typical craigslist sedan. Hard would be a clunker that is just barely puttering along. Nightmare mode would just be a bycicle. Additional difficulty parameters might include things like the time of day, how long the drive is, how much time do you have to get to the destination, what the weather is like, if the roads are icy, how many monsters are roaming the countryside, what kinds of monsters, etc.

I suppose you could also have segments of the game outside of the car. For example, when you arrive at a town, you would have to find gasoline and spare parts. However, there are still spooks after you, so once you leave the relative safety of your car, you have to be extra careful that you don't get nabbed while siphoning gas. Similarly, if there was a hunger/thirst system put in place, you would also have to stop for supplies, forcing you to make yourself at least somewhat vulnerable.

One of the biggest reasons they're so popular is precisely because they're not generic nigger rap.

I'd say have some semi-random generated road sections. There also needs to be some NPCs, like if you need to change a tire or do oil/gas/jumpstarts. They might be helpful, but some are just human jerks and some are secretly ghosts. You can carjack them, but expect them to chase after you too. You might also have cars on the other lane swerving and so forth. Also you can have Duel moments and run-ins at gas stations– some abandoned, some with an attendent (good or ill), stuff like that. Imagine having to make that walk all around the gas station with that key you have to get from the attendent inside only to have to head into a dingy Silent Hill-grade bathroom.

Would there be a GPS installed in your car? Only on the Easy settings? How much music on the radio/news chatter would there be? Would music calm your nerves but draw more monsters to you?

>How much music on the radio/news chatter would there be? Would music calm your nerves but draw more monsters to you?

I know this will sound like it's ripped straight out of Silent Hill, and that's because it is. One of the things I liked about that series is the way the radio picked up monster sounds. Similarly, the car radio could pull double duty. Like you said, there could be some kind of stress variable that rises with time and setting the radio to a music station can reduce that stress. On the other hand, you can also set the radio to a specific, local station that broadcasts nothing but static until a creature gets close, at which point, you'll hear a specific sound based on whatever's coming for you, but your stress level rises. Stress management would force you to choose between reducing stress and being warned about threats. This would be particularly important when you need to make stops as it should be one of very few ways to have any warning of threats. On higher difficulties, hearing sounds made by certain enemies can raise your stress level so quickly that you only get about five seconds to turn off the radio before you go insane. While I don't think it should just be an instant game over, I do think it should carry a heavy penalty, like forcing the MC to stop the car as he tries to get his shit back together.

the instrumentals are done by white guys anyway

bdaac2 No.14863128

>>14863066

I was imagining the stress akin to Eternal Darkness/Amnesia's take. You need to take your mind off the dark dread lest you start seeing things or swere more, leading to fatal crashes. Some ghostly threats might be picked up via the radio on the (generic instrumental takes of varying genres) music tracks, like whispered voices, breathing, etc. Leaving the radio on might also eat at fuel, battery, and all that.

I think the game would be pretty loosely tied, like it's merely scenarios you can choose and might have bookends treating these like ghost stories someone might be narrating. They all don't have to be at night. Some can be under fog, hazy downpouring rain with shadowy figures in the mist, snowy mountain drives with spirits shrouded in the snow. Desert ghost towns, Lousiana rural backroads by the swamp, nearing New England/Pacific Northwest ports, you name it.

Since it's the du jour, the game would be in first person. Though you CAN get out of your car, don't expect getting too far on foot away from it before it turns too dark or lonesome, becoming a jump scare game over from whatever creature. At most, you might hop from one car to another, being by the side of the road, or heading into a gas station/truck stop with maybe less than one block to walk about safely (like maybe across a street). Basically if there's no street light or headlight nearby you, it's danger zone.

6ac71d No.14863272

>>14863128

>You need to take your mind off the dark dread lest you start seeing things

This could also be a positive as some creatures might only be visible when you're highly stressed, but as those are rare, it's not a good idea to risk it. I was also thinking that higher difficulties could have a creature made of sound itself, so hearing it on the radio is basically giving it access to your body. I wouldn't want it to be an instant game over, though, as it would introduce RNG into whether or not you die just from turning on the radio.

>like whispered voices, breathing, etc.

I was thinking that, too. A specific example would be pulling up to a gas station with the radio off. You can see a figure moving around inside, but you can't make it out too well from where you parked. You turn the radio on to the local monster detection station and hear someone whispering about how they're going to kill you. You now know that the figure inside the gas station is a hostile ghost as only ghosts would have discernible, human speech, and now you have to decide if the gas is worth the risk. Alternatively, you could hear whispering about how boring things are, but peaceful is best. You now know the figure in the gas station is a friendly ghost who might give you directions, repair your car a bit, or warn you about threats further down the road, like telling you to be sure to listen to the radio on a music station between two certain mile markers as the monster in that area hates loud sounds.

While I like the idea of the game being shorter play sessions of randomly selected areas to add variety in locations and potential monsters, I also think it might make the game too ambitious for an indie project and introduce feature creep.

IIRC the overall idea boiled down to a survival horror game (think Darkwood in 3d) where you spent the day pilfering abandoned cities for food and other resources while spending the night driving to the next city, because as soon as the sun sets, it becomes clear that the cities are not quite as abandoned as they seem.

Daytime segments basically would be a race against the clock because you need to find food and petrol, while the locals will fuck your shit up if they find you in their city after sundown.

Nighttime segments would give you the choice between

a) driving to the next city via the main road (almost guaranteed to see you attacked by enemy vehicles, and god help you if they total your car)

b) driving through field paths and forest roads (challenging just from the driving aspect alone, plus there is a chance that you will run into something that will make the townsfolk in their pickup trucks look like pleasant people)

c) driving during the day instead, making this a safe segment but also meaning you will have no time gathering resources

They entire idea basically came up from webms like

Maybe make it like a cryptid cross country tour where you go around and have to watch out for the local breed of monster. Sometimes a car just goes totally broken on you and you gotta steal a new one or rely on smaller scale means like bikes, scooters, etc which wear down your needs way faster.

>>14863000

Definitely go light on random generation. Theres too much randomly generated shit nowadays, at most have some minor events randomized.

Though the radio could really play into the horror. News and talk shows are plentiful at the start talking about all the monsters out there but slowly they start going off, music sometimes goes to static which would draw in monsters, and eventually you're left with choosing nothing at all to make driving harder, static which draws monsters, or the last remaining show on some ham radio whose talking up the monsters as the crazy guy who was actually prepared for it all, acting as the middle ground of both bad options.

This is probably the only game where an attention bar would do well. Driving a long straight road with no music? You start swerving and having tunnel vision. See a monster? Shit spikes too high and even slight tweaks on your end send the car into a full turn.

Also the car was driven in third-person, which looked better in my opinion.

Less overtly spooky shit. You won't be chasing down monsters and shit like that, that's above your paygrade, and the game might fuck with you and there really is nothing supernatural going on at all. You're basically a minimum wage, bumbling retard (or a genre savvy loner if you choose hardmode) and do guard stuff, like patrolling the premises during the day or night, depending on your shift, escorting scientists, etc.

As the game progresses things start to become weirder and weirder as everyone in the place starts to unravel (except for you, for whatever reason).

>To do this though, you need to gather the trophys and sell them to your boss, who will then give you the raw materials.

>The problem is, the first viable enemy in the game is a pack hunter, and you need to isolate it by luring it into a cave- all the while you're being dogged down by even deadlier monsters, and don't know what's in that cave.

>Game continually fluctuates between power, but the player is always kept tense by some horror they cannot yet survive.

Your selected country also picks what monsters and traits happen in that playthrough:

Ant/Arctic/Canada/Russia for example:

MONSTERS: Wendigos, Yetis, Frostmaws, Tuunbaq,

NEUTRAL LIFE:

Sasquatch (Will go after you if hungry, but will definitely opt for any food you offer instead. Very rare and elusive, but will keep you safe for a few minutes if you find one.) etc.

TRAITS: Iceroads (extremely risky shortcut, must be careful that you don't fall through the ice, must be aware of monsters under the ice, must not move too quickly, be aware of other drivers. Monsters get no coverage, which means you also cannot hide from them, but they cannot hide from you.

FORESTED: Winding roads with poor visibility and mobility, though the monsters will have the same issues.

AUSTRALIA: Austrailian Gigadeath (basically a giant spider-scorpion), Fleshrender (a skinless, highly aggressive variant of the Sasquatch that steals people's flesh and wears it as a coat. Cannot be pacified like the sasquatch) and Maulgore; a loose amalgamation of various gore and dead people wrapped around a hideous, vaguely crocadilian-kangaroo body. Can very easily total your truck and kill you instantly. Avoid at all costs.

I'd rather do that as a kind of timed mission where you explicitly are told that you are transporting a super-horny snake grill and that you need to bang her every few hours, or else she gets unruly.

Problem is, this has to be a quick delivery, so you have to balance between finding places to park your truck and enter the back to satisfy the hissy and your general time limit as the clock gets melting down.

Was that the thread where someone pointed out we basically wanted a game that already exists called "Jalopy" or some other eastern european game, just with randomized paranormal shit that may or may not happen on the road?

Cause that was a great thread and I'm not upset in the slightest if the game ends up anything like that.

That's pretty nice. It would be cool if there were more variants like overheating the car or battery power. Having to do shit like turning off the lights or temporarily turning off the car or even have to go and use water from your water supply to keep the car running. Also, shit like the monsters can see your lights so you have to turn them off to flee, or even worse, they can hear the motor so if you're hiding you have to turn it off.

I really want this game now.

Siren 1 has more scary driving than this game. It even had zombies hitting the car and windows breaking everytime.

"Working at a creepy ass weirdo gas station" is the conceit of Night Shift. The basic idea isn't necesarrily horror, it's that the store gets weird at night and the night crew doesn't talk to the day shift about it. Some examples of strange events:

>The gas pump grumbles while it pumps.

>The shelves all face themselves, at once, with a great amount of force, as if they're passive-aggressively cleaning themselves

>Picking up the mop to go clean literally summons customers from nowhere, in the way that any normal worker jokes it does.

>>Aforementioned summoned customer is confused and lost most of the time.

>Customer has strange currency that, while looking mostly like normal bills, has strange deviances that don't appear handmade (the portrait has one eye and an eyepatch, looks much younger than usual, etc)

and as time goes on, or you work more consecutive shifts, more weird shit happens:

>There's a set of stairs leading down in the back. This store doesn't have a basement, as you recall.

>Someone goes into the bathroom and doesn't leave. When you go to check, the doors are missing, replaced with blank wall.

>When you pop open your till, you swear it's empty. Once you close it and open it again, it's fine, with a note of hastily-scrawled apology.

Night Shift is an amazing idea. I remember in one of the threads someone suggested that management or the day shift would leave notes on things that needed to be done, like unclogging the toilet, replacing a broken mirror, and make sure the door to the tool shed is marked with fresh goat blood every 20 minutes or so. And don't open it until sunrise.

You could even use that in a spooky driving game. Say a friendly babushka tells you that the spirits down the next stretch of road hate the smell of incense. Of course, maybe you're strapped for cash or she's lying and trying to make a quick buck off of you. And it's gonna get pretty smelly inside the car with burning incense. You could lower the windows but the smell of incense might put something else on your trail.
