2D or 3D?

For 3D, you've most likely tried it, but Mario 64 is still my favorite 3D platformer. The only real area it lacks in is level creativity, and if that's something you want, the Spyro trilogy is great as well, 2 especially.

fb0432 No.14854774

Consider Steamworld Dig 2 instead. The first isn't as good as Heist and 2 in my opinion.

On PC

> Oniken

> Cave Story

> Escape Goat

> Odallus

> Wonder Boy: The Dragon Trap

> 1001 Spikes

I really recommend Escape Goat. It's a great puzzle platformer, the very definition of an unknown masterpiece.

These are more metroidvania than platformers but I guess that still counts.

>Cave Story

>An Untitled Story

>I Wanna Be The Guy

Go check out Bleed 1/2 and Noitu Love 2 if you want to see some action-heavy platformers making good use of mouse controls.

You could try "Bloodstained Curse of The Moon", if you like classicvanias and you've enjoyed Shovel Knight's graphic style.

Also "Curse of Issyos" is another nice Greek-themed Classicvania made by the creator of Maldita Castilla.

"AM2R" (Another Metroid 2 Remake) is very good if you liked the GBA Metroid games. And if you can emulate them, "Metroid Rogue Dawn" (Romhack of Metroid 1 for NES), "Hyper Metroid" (Romhack of Super Metroid for the SNES) and "Metroid Samus Returns" for the 3DS are pretty solid games.

>>14854769

9badcb No.14858571

Maybe it's just not your kind of game.

There are some pretty tricky extended sections here and there that need good timing for several obstacles in a row, and the moment you start, there's no stopping or turning back. Generally just staring at the situation for a while was enough to work out the least convenient way to get across, which was usually the correct solution, and then it's just a question of execution. I liked that.

After you beat the main island in 1001 Spikes, you get to some ice zone. Some of the levels there are a lot more open and intricate, and the deaths get a bit cheaper. More puzzles where you can't really see what you were supposed to do until it's too late, while the island didn't have much of that problem if you were perceptive enough. Didn't like that area too much, but it was more content.

The unlockable characters would probably make the game a lot more accessible to people who aren't into this sort of thing, as I think they all had some extra mobility. Limited double jumps and things to that effect. Too bad the people who could use them the most don't really have the patience to suffer through it.

I guess it's not the kind of game for everyone. A more polished and predictable Rick Dangerous or IWBTG. I actually liked the traps in IWBTG more than those in Rick Dangerous, because after a while, you could get a pretty good idea of what's going to kill you and how to avoid it before actually triggering the events. Rick Dangerous is just cheap all the way through.

And some of the traps in IWBTG are just fucking funny. One of the best is right near the beginning. Some disappearing-reappearing Mega Man blocks. You sit around, they go in one pattern. You start jumping on them, they go a little differently at the end. I love that shit.

I'm not big on platformers but some enjoyable ones I've played recently are Hollow Knight and Downwell. I've been playing Downwell loads as it's a great little rogue-lite with a tight design philosophy and a really satisfying combo system. Not gotten terribly far in Hollow Knight but it seems okay so far. One niggle being fast travel and respawn points are somewhat few and far between so you end up doing an awful lot of backtracking.

even though I'm playing on a keyboard, I have a knack for hard platformers, sometimes.

>Ori and the Blind Forest

Challenging, fun abilities, excellent atmosphere and beautiful graphics, easily worth a thousand pixelshits. Available on GoG, if you're into buying.

>N++

Great fucking game. Starts innocently, but soon enough becomes a test of your patience, timing and manoeuvring skills, though thankfully it never descends into pixel perfect jumps (unless you want to complete challenges, that is). Too bad it was released only on Steam and PS4.

If you're into alternative platformers, check out Snake Pass. Being a snake is fucking hard.

>Cobalt

I'm not recommending this one, though for a subjective reason - control scheme was made for game pads and is rubbish, I can't get used to it at all. You can still try it, maybe you'll get along better. It kinda reminded me of Cortex Command, if CC was an actual game.

>>14862915

What I've meant is not that the graphic style is bad, but that it's not informative. Enemies are white on black, whoa. And they all look the same. And there are no colours beside black, white, red and brown. I don't think game was supposed to be bad at informing you where and what type the enemies are.

Shank is not a platformer, it's a beat em up, if you consider it a platforming game then you must also consider streets of rage and final fight platformers, and even the most retarded of children can tell those two are definitely NOT platformers.

Iji, shortish but you'll get at least 2 playthroughs out of it.

Aquaria was really good.

Maximo if you're looking for 3d.

which momodora did you play? I liked all of them but they're all too damn short and the fourth one that got all the hype just re-used a lot of stuff from the second and third one and added a Dark Souls roll. so it was pretty derivative all around.

Yes, but when you say platformer what comes to mind is a focus on platform jumping and not a 2D shooter with no platforming elements. Intrusion 2 isn't built around traversing environments, most of the game is on barely 2 layers. Still fun as hell game though, with great visual design.
