My guess is that they went for procedural generation to make things cheaper, and that more "content" was a side thing. All those annoying dead-ends should show that they really didn't put much effort into it.

It also doesn't have secret rooms or a constant rule for generation, instead of being in the farthest part of the floor like in Isaac it's entirely random, and the boss could be just a few steps away.

The maps don't work well with the kill-less-enemies-get-more-loot mechanic or the signature charge, and it's frustrating.

It feels like a cross between a diablo clone and a bullet hell shooter. The random levels get same-y real quick, and I'd have rather more relic and spell slots you can actually customize in advance to actually build complex combos rather than be temp stuff you can only pick up during runs and that will go poof once you die.

You just don't understand how game development works now. Most of the indie trends spawn from trend of using a free code library or a cheap add-on for an existing engine, then you "just make a game", remember that? One viral success makes a thousand clones in a month, some might even be better than the original and make a new viral "success". Suddenly all indie devs figure out how to code the exact same bubble wave distortion shader, or the exact same chromatic aberration. Anyway, most of this is just trends, nothing more.

Some game devs actually still code and do new stuff, but the good "handmade shit" is covered under the avalanche of bought/copypasted shit. And there is "nothing wrong about it", good games still come out of this dystopian way. Problem is that less and less of the games made are any good, quantity over quality by a force of thousands.

Still though, the most worrying thing that I have noticed is that more often devs don't care about their games at all. Small studios make shit that feels and plays like it was designed by an outside hire marketing company.

It's like: If you don't care at all, "just don't make a game", remember that?

I seriously do not know where I was going with this, but here we are.

Game is highly reliant on skill over any actual variance between runs. You get four skills (Arcana): A basic, which is your spammable, simple attack, a standard, which has a shortish cooldown, a dash, which lets you zip arond, dodge, cross pits, etc (sometimes this has an attack that has a cooldown but the dash part does not) and a signature. The signature acts as a standard, unless you have Mana, which lets you unleash a much stronger version.

Problem is, most of the Arcana are very similar. Most of the Basic are a melee attack of some kind, with primary differences being speed and damage. They look different, too, but that's a side thing. Here's a big rock fist! Here's a wind slash! Shame they are EXACTLY THE SAME except the rock one is slower and does more damage. They seem different, but they basically are not, and you will ned up sticking with the ones you prefer anyway.

Relics are passive items you can pick up, but they all alter numbers instead of anything else, so they too suffer from sameyness.

Oh, and worst of all? There are about 12 minibosses and 3 actual bosses. The three actual bosses are encountered every run, only difference is the order. In short, it's worth a pirate but only a sale would ever interest me in this.

Actually had picked this up a couple days prior.

If you want a game like this but done right, try out Crosscode. Nothing about the maps is random, they're entirely created from scratch with care. The abilities you get are completely customizable down several pathways, and there's decent story. The bosses are even good. What brings this from good to great for me is the puzzles. The puzzles are fucking amazing. Really scratches that zelda dungeon itch if you know how that feels.

It's not out yet technically, but i've been playing it in early access for several revisions and most of the game is there already. I'd give it a look if nothing else if you enjoy this top-down style action rpg genre.

If you want to get a decent idea of the game, this video's not bad.
