Jagex is canning Runescape Classic come August 6th to the disappointment of dozens. According to the post, they're doing so because of bots, unfixable game breaking bugs, and an overall lack of a player base. You can read the full article here if you want.

There's a few good private servers for the current OSRS. But you're right, /v/scape is probably still the best one out there since it's pre-GE and gives a more authentic 2007scape experience.

I've got fond memories from back in 2003 of Runescape Classic, before RS2 was a thing. I think it would be nice to have a downloadable version of the game that could be played in single player or possible to create network games. Essentially Jagex approved private servers.

You're thinking of Old School Runescape, which is the reboot of RS2 which came out in 2004. Runescape Classic is the original game from 2001 that was re-hosted by Jagex around 2009. The OSRS numbers didn't drop much after the event since the community rallied together to protest the event. The only casualties were a couple players banned by ass blasted faggot mods.

They started off by shutting down the free version due to constant rule breaking, then they removed the ability for new members to start playing it; only those who had accessed it in the months prior to the change were permitted to continue playing. Years later they reopened RSC for a limited time to new members, and anyone who logged in during that time became permanently flagged for access to all RSC servers except one, which remained a veteran server. They did that a couple more times over the next couple years. After the 15th anniversary, they kept RSC open to members permanently, but free players still can't access it.

I guess they just didn't really want to devote any more resources to a 17-year-old game that barely has anyone playing anymore, and those that are are just botting all the time. Doesn't really help that the instructions on how to access RSC take a bit of digging to do, and it's not like the game is advertised at all. I hope they release the source when it's all said and done so that interested parties can go in and fix it up.

This also means that RS3 fags only have three more months to get their Classic Cape and pretend to be old school.

To this day RSC is the only game that truly earned that living breathing MMO feel to me. Everything was structured and interactive. There was a best armor set but not THE best armor set so losing your stuff was never that big of a deal. I remember putting off killing the dragon for the longest time because I wanted to do it alone and finally achieving that, I put the game down forever. It was so comfy.
