Legions and Midair are both Tribes Clones. Legions was pretty fucking fun back in the day when we still had threads about it on /v/. Midair is in open beta on steam and is basically trying to be a low budget hybrid of Ascend and Tribes 2.

A campaign like UT1999 and UT2003/4 where its an actual tournament with trophies would work. IIRC they play CTF in the starseige universe instead of fighting wars so it's basically a less shit version of UT3s campaign. Tribes 2 also has some SP missions though those are glorified tutorials they're still fun.

The devs have a history of strange design decisions. For example originally you couldn't spawn with armor on and every time you spawned you had to equip it at an inventory station. It was a balance solution but it was a very strange on that they thankfully later changed

Midair definitely scratches the "Ascend" itch but it doesn't feel like it's pushing anything forward like Legions was. It's a slightly tweaked Ascend which is good for what it is but I hope that if it gets popular that we see other devs try making their own take on the series but I doubt that since casuals hate going fast in general.
Also Midair looks like complete shit both artistically and graphically. Why didn't the devs decide to cover everyone up in armor once they realized they didn't have the skill to make good looking models?

The devs said they are tweaking how the jetpacks work which I hope means that they will be designing bigger or flatter maps to go along with it. Also they definitely need to spend some time making the game look less shitty if they expect to get any audience that isn't just hardcore T2 fans who are used to dealing with 18 year old looking graphics.

For most people it's that it's ugly and had a bunch of threads about it on release.
It's pretty decent so far, it is trying to deal with the problems Ascend had which is nice. For example the game is making it easier for people to catch up and stop flag stealers but without putting on a speed limit.
Also a lot of people can't get into the Jetpack style because it is far more similar to the older games than Ascend and they are used to Ascends.

The issue with the genre is that it is not casual friendly. Games live or die based on if twitch streamers play them. You likely can't think of a single modern popular multiplayer game that didn't have a twitch presence. Twitch Streamers are casual and likely can't into going fast. Until a game figures out how to get twitch tards playing it the genre wont have more than 100 people playing in any of the servers.
Also Twitch is exactly the reason modern multiplayer games are all 100% shit.
