Is it not shit yet?

how come there hasn't been a good recent space warfare simulator game? Like something with voxel-level/complete customability for vessels and procedural destruction (or the simulation of the ships' interiors) I've heard of starmade, but to be honest that game is kinda shallow and not extremely fun. I've also heard of Children of a Dead Earth, but that's a pretty shallow game too, and it doesn't have multiplayer as far as I know.

598ac0 No.14841721

Try Cosmoteer, it's okay.

Could be better, could be worse. At least it's free.

Ah yes, i've played it.

Gets pretty repetetive fast, even moreso because it's in 2d.

>how come there hasn't been a good recent space warfare simulator game?

X3 TC/AP is still the best out there, and it looks a hell of a lot better than Space Engineers.

>Like something with voxel-level/complete customability for vessels and procedural destruction (or the simulation of the ships' interiors)

Because it would be a nightmare to develop and wouldn't sell, since hardcore spess games are a niche within a niche.

You can either pick an Egosoft title, wait for Star Citizen to be released :^), or grab one of the dozens of cynical early access survival memegames with a space skin.

SE has had pretty good success based on the promise of building ships and space stations and fighting with them. I don't think it's as niche as you think it is.

It had pretty good success in the same vein that every cynical early access cash grab has had: promise the world and then fuck off and make something else before your current project has finished. The only game they've ever completed is Miner Wars 2081, and I implore you to go take a look at that one.

>X3 TC/AP

That was released ten years ago anon.

>Because it would be a nightmare to develop and wouldn't sell

Easily fucking achievable if you actually attempt to optimize (unlike modern developers) the game and aren't a retard who uses unity. This is seriously a big peeve of mine. We have like four times the resources since a few years ago, yet games only look slightly better and, on average, perform fucking WORSE. Lazy faggots with no passion for technology and spectacle killed gaming.

>since hardcore spess games are a niche within a niche.

Star citizen got x billion amounts of shekels, even though it's a niche that doesn't mean there isn't huge support for ti.

2b6e24 No.14841855

>>14841834

>That was released ten years ago anon.

Well yeah, but with mods it's still an unrivaled experience. Stalker was released 11 years ago and is in a similar situation.

>Star citizen got x billion amounts of shekels

Because they promised the perfect game for everyone, from FPS fans to hardcore space sim fans, to action space flight fans, and were extremely fortunate to ride the vidya Kickstarter hype train to the moon before kikescammer fatigue was even a thing. They got their shekels and succeeded in nothing more than breeding cynicism for the genre.

>Well yeah, but with mods it's still an unrivaled experience

I appreciate the recommendation but my OP specifies a recent game.

>Because they promised the perfect game for everyone,

Regardless of what they promised, it doesn't invalidate the fact that they were still appealing to that niche.

why haven't you tried making one yourself?

>but my OP specifies a recent game.

There aren't any that are worth playing, and the stipulation of 'recent' when it comes to vidya typically infers once's preference for something that looks new, and modded AP looks better than Space Engineers which was your example of a recent game.

>it doesn't invalidate the fact that they were still appealing to that niche

Of course not, they milked those rich whales who were so desperate for a good spess game that they threw tens of thousands of dollars at jpegs. But the real question is, do you think those same whales are going to fall for that trick again, or do you think SC poisoned the well? I strongly believe the latter.

Who knows, X4 might actually be good.

On one hand, I don't want to give them too much credit, because releasing broken games is unacceptable, even if you fix them over the next few years. On the other hand, the standard today seems to be to release broken games, fix about a fourth of the issues over the next few months, and then abandon them.

I'm cautiously optimistic that X4 might be playable and fun within the next 3 years.

I'm still wary too, it'll likely still be buggy at release but maybe feature complete this time around, if they learned anything decent with Home of Light. That is, not just selling what should have been the base game as an expansion years later, such as with CIV and others.

sounds amazing, but is it a game?

The problem with all of these sandbox toys is that none of them are games with objectives and whatnot

Stellaris is literally the greatest game ever made by anyone, it is so rich and complex in all facets of art that it's almost like it's not even a game anymore, but a masterpiece made by a literal genius. No other game ever made, Doom, Quake, Diablo, Age of Empires, whatever you name it ever even compares to the absolute brilliance and marvel of this masterpiece. I double dog dare you to even begin to debate me on this subject because you LITERALLY can't

More specifically, they sold their game to Take-Two, who dropped in their boilerplate EULA from GTAV onto KSP. This includes disturbing passages like:

>"By installing and using the Software, you consent to the information collection and usage terms set forth in this section and Licensor's Privacy Policy, including (where applicable) (i) the transfer of any personal information and other information to Licensor, its affiliates, vendors, and business partners, and to certain other third parties, such as governmental authorities, in the U.S. and other countries located outside Europe or your home country, including countries that may have lower standards of privacy protection; (ii) the public display of your data, such as identification of your user-created content or displaying your scores, ranking, achievements, and other gameplay data on websites and other platforms; (iii) the sharing of your gameplay data with hardware manufacturers, platform hosts, and Licensor's marketing partners; and (iv) other uses and disclosures of your personal information or other information as specified in the above-referenced Privacy Policy, as amended from time to time. If you do not want your information used or shared in this manner, then you should not use the Software."

>"The information we collect may include personal information such as your first and/or last name, e-mail address, phone number, photo, mailing address, geolocation, or payment information. In addition, we may collect your age, gender, date of birth, zip code, hardware configuration, console ID, software products played, survey data, purchases, IP address and the systems you have played on. We may combine the information with your personal information and across other computers or devices that you may use."

To my knowledge, KSP currently does not employ any of these functions, nor does it look like they will incorporate these at any point. Regardless, this is a cause for concern. For those who purchased already, you can still halt updates or downgrade on Steam through the beta opt-in menu. I'm not sure if GOG has older versions of the game but they probably do.

I'm not sure why Take-Two bought Squad in the first place. The game is way past its prime and probably makes very little money at this point. Their first DLC is horse armor-tier and I think they're scared to include major features through it. I think they're going to push for it as an edutainment game for schools. God knows there's a lot of money to be made with that.

The only redeeming thing about Stellaris is being able to play as actual space slaver Nazis. Other than that, shit. I've played it extensively with friends and we squeezed all the enjoyment out of it that we could before the laughably bad ship balance (yes, even after that big recent patch) and ridiculous desync issues caused us to decide enough was enough.

788aaf No.14846205

>>14843017

Guy's still just building the skeleton for it. IIRC he said that it will follow the standard survival formula, you start on a planet, build up tech, maybe research to get off the planet, and then once you are off the planet, something something, don't know what's the endgame supposed to be. Probably gonna have AI factions and the usual stuff.

Spengies would already be a good game without objectives or anything though, only if it fucking worked. Building various ships for various roles is fun in spengies, although we'll probably see less of that in Skywanderers.

788aaf No.14846208

>>14844078

It's been a while since I played it, but when I did, it was pretty barebones, you run out of shit to do very quickly. It's fun until that point, but it's like 5-6 hours, not much you can get out of it.
