And I prefer UT, because the assualt maps felt like actual missions you were accomplishing, not just shooting for shooting's sake.

Unreal tournament original and 2004 take the crown.
I spent thousands of hours between the two, especially 2004 playing custom maps like hellbender race and scorpion race. Played 2004 so much that i would have dreams about it. Whenever I was sick, i would have the strangest 2004 fever dreams

It was playable when it was new. But QuakeWorld movement was faster, had no railshitgun, and Threewave CTF was the best. Q2 CTF was second, but I don't think anyone even bothered with Q3 CTF. Overall QW is the best Quake multiplayer experience.

Q3 was the cancer that killed Quake. It streamlined and e-sportsed all the levels and changed the focus of the game from deatchmatches to duels. It lost the fun and charm of Q1 in the process and made itself irrelevant to all but the small community who used to play duel mods, quickly leading to the Quake series being abandoned by the general public. That's something hard to explain to someone that wasn't there for Quake 1 but Quake had a wide audience prior to Q3.

>It streamlined and e-sportsed all the levels and changed the focus of the game from deatchmatches to duels. It lost the fun and charm of Q1
The people who played Quake 1 for a casual deathmatch bout just moved on towards greener pastures, such as Battlefield or Counter-Strike. To those people there wasn't anything particularly unique Quake 1 offered which could cater to their needs, any other multiplayer game which didn't involve a lot of tryharding could work just fine. Nor is Quake 1 that special when it came to fun deathmatches, most shooters of the time had identical such multiplayer modes.
Quake 1's popularity was largely derived from good netcode and a lack of competition at the time. Once people could get their interchangeable casual bouts of fun elsewhere, Quake 3 decided to carve out its own niche and identity.
13dfc6 No.14837279
>>14837258
I played Q1 for non-casual deathmatch. That's what it was known for. It was never a casual game. This is before forced 50% win rate matchmaking and you'd have an extreme mix of skills which always kept it interesting and the modding community was huge with all sorts of great shit like rocket arena and team fortress. The community didn't move on, they were forced out by Q3 wanting to be a dueling game above all else and being willing to sacrifice to make that happen. id breaking up led to them sinking both Quake and Doom by taking them in the wrong directions.

Also I just have to mock you here for a moment as Quake 1's netcode was comedy that you guys are completely unfamiliar with. Until much later it had no client side prediction. Of MOVEMENT. So if you held forward you'd not see your character move forward for however long it took the server to tell you you'd moved, and when you stopped holding forward you'd have to have an idea of how far you'd keep moving before you expected to come to a stop. As most people were playing on modems you'd have a pretty high ping and it took a huge amount of skill to play the thing online. Even popular greybeard games like BZFlag had handled this better.
It also had a lot of problems with packet loss. Carmack's bright idea later on was to handle packet loss by increasing the amount of redundant data he'd send. Thing is, packet loss, especially back then before RED, is almost always a response to congestion and not bit errors. So by increasing redundant data he'd respond to a worsening traffic jam by sending an increasing amount of traffic. As this was UDP on tail-drop routers it would assrape networks. Every college in the US was falling offline due to this in '96 and having to segregate their dorm networks and learn how to step up their networking game. It was literally a driving force behind research in stochastic queues as it was wrecking the colleges that were part of internet2 so was natural to study their own problems.
Anyway, back to work.

Quake 2 was ok. The engine changes massively improved support for hardware acceleration and the mod speedups from compiling them to a lower level let grappling hooks finally work reasonably well. The multiplayer was fixed by mods and provided the same kind of fun as Q1.

I have to mock you. Because when I got ISDN I was an LPB. While QW made things orders of magnitude better your argument falls flat when you take skill into consideration. Ie, with enough skill you didn't absolutely require Zoid's client-side prediction to do well and have fun even with LPBs having an obvious advantage of literally ~.15 secs.

How do you guys play Quake Arena nowadays? OpenArena? Quake Live?
810086 No.14846697
I enjoy Quake Live, but there aren't many players.
Seems a lot more people play CPMA in australia, but when I tried to get into that I found the only way to improve is just to practice, and although I like that, I do enjoy how if you really get you nogin joggin in vq3 and vql you can get a bit of an edge on people and lay traps, that doesn't really seem to exist as much in CPMA as just thinking on your feet and having flawless execution.
People who play it all seem universally psychopathic. It's hard to find people to practice with who are good and don't play just for the pleasure of making the other player suffer.

What is the point of Quake even? Just bunnyhop around the same maps shooting each other with the same guns over and over and over until someone wins? It's more endless repetition of muscle memory conditioning than a game. Spawn, get a gun, shoot, kill, die, repeat. It barely even has any content other than warpgates.

Quake ruined FPS by popularizing multiplayer, which eventually gave birth to games like overwatch and cod.
Also, cod was originally made in a modified version of Quake's engine.
