>Quake did better levels
Which Quake are we talking about? Because anytime I think of Quake 2 I think of this giant brown glob and that's how much I remember it with minor exceptions like the Strogg's palace or that one pyramid thing, outside of that the entire aesthetic of Quake 2 was just bland as you could get. Quake 1 on the other hand, despite it being as brown at least had some variation in how they did levels thanks to the involvement of John Romero and American Mcgee. Unreal was colorful as fuck and the scenery changed enough that I still remember multiple levels off the top of my head that stood out.
>half-life did better pacing
Not really. There are some major hiccups with pacing in HL1 with chapters like On A Rail, Residue Processing, and Xen.

To be fair, UT4 showed some good promise. It was becoming sort of a bit of both worlds between UT2K4 and UT99, adding some interesting movement mechanics like wallrunning, sliding, and early on there was some cool weapon tech like shard-hopping/wall climbing.
Then they started to shit on the weapon balance more, they made sliding worthless, they started going the route of UT3 with some weapon models, the finished maps looked kind of eh, and the updates stopped coming. It's a damn shame, but they had my hopes up for a little while.

Hell, I'm not even invested in UT4 beyond the fact that I'd like to see a new UT game come out, but I think it's a shame as a whole when a game-in-the-making gets shoved to the side for no other reason than that another game of theirs managed to become a fad.

The single-player campaign in Unreal was pretty meh. There graphics might have been impressive back in the day, but that train has long since passed and what's left is a very linear shooter intermixed with bumping into switches.
If you want to play the multiplayer then Unreal Tournament is the way to go. It has competent bots, so even as a single-player game it can hold up. Plus, since GOG games are DRM-free you can just lend your copy to some people and play with them without having everyone but the game.
Oh well, it's a free gift, so I can't complain. Maybe next year we'll get UT99 for free, who knows? What would really be the bomb is if we get the source code for the original Unreal Engine, just think of all the games that could be getting source ports then. Easy as fuck to play hard to master
It's not like a fighting game where you actually have to learn insanely "basic" things just to play the game like knowing about cancels how to execute combos etc. Fighting games require training most games like halo UT etc. are pick up and play but mastering them obviously is a whole different story as opposed to a game like tekken where you can "pick up and play" but if you do that you aren't really learning anything.
