>Alone In The Dark and the first Resident Evil are the only actual survival horror games I've played.
Funny that you say that, I've always seen both of them as adventures with combat mechanics, for me, survival horror, was more like a buzzword to create differentiation from the genre, a fair buzzword to be honest since both of those games were very unique.
But as time passed, quoting you " "survival horror" game isn't actually survival horror " anymore, any game that scares you can be seen as a survival horror now, not taking into account mechanics at all. And I see that as a good thing, there is profound creative potential there, we could see tactical survival horror, beat 'em up survival horror, metroidvania survival horror (Although metroidlikes are already kinda moody), fuck we already got a platform survival horror, there's plenty of rooms for surprises.
I just don't see that happening since creativity isn't generally rewarded with cash, and this is a industry driven by cash, and if that weren't enough, game design as a practice is quite abandoned, just check GDC videos on youtube almost all of 'em are about technical stuff, self help and marketing. The most probable forecast is just another jumpscare-loaded "stealth" survival horror fps.
