We all know what "minimalist game" is. They come in huge variety, ranging from masterpiece (Ico) to mediocre (Limbo) to pretentious dogshit (Thomas).

But what is a "maximalist game"? A miserable little pile I think it's a game with as much intertwined mechanics and elements as possible without making it overbloated and nonfunctional.

I'd say that good example of maximalist game would be Fallout Tactics, while bad maximalist game would be Battleborn.

What do you think?

What good and bad maximalist game can you name?

Although Ace Combat itself is pretty streamlined, I've always like their "maximalist" HUDs.

Reminds me of Armored Core hud.

Probably should have mentioned it as another example of maximalist game done right.

But are they truly overtly complex?

Most mmos old and new have bloated UIs but at their core they are pretty simplistic games.

Stillborn is actually a bloated piece of shit, that would still count as maximalist game even if it had SOTC ui.

I remember playing helicopter simulators back in the day and those used every button on the keyboard.

Dwarf Fortress is probably the most maximalist game I know of. Almost everything you can think of is simulated and it lets you do pretty much anything.

Aside from that, Tactics Ogre is another one /v/ always cites as being really deep but I've yet to play it myself. I have played Disgea though, and that game has a master/student system that allows you to share spells between classes, units can pick up and throw each other, and probably some other stuff I'm forgetting. You can level everyone up to lvl9999, and then go inside of your items and complete dungeons to level them up too.

56e1a2 No.14815553

>>14815545

I can't comment on dwarf fortress or tactics ogre, but Disgaea doesn't have shit on Front Mission in terms for complexity.

And I consider FM to be pretty simple game compared to Fallout Tactics.

Unlimited Saga was pretty maxed mechanically for an rpg. There was a tutorial series on youtube that was roughly 100 parts. It was no wonder the games manual was criticized upon release. I really liked the game for its confusing nature.

I haven't played JA2, but does it have the level of interactivity FT does?

>doctor gets shot

>sneaky dude sneaks into enemy base, steals shit, including med kits

>bring them back to doctor

>doctor fixes himself, ready to roll

>you can pick up and throw shit at enemies or give to team members

>you can talk some missions out into different outicoms

>story branches depending on your descisions

>fully functional stat system from F1/2 but expanded and retooled for tactics game

>3 dimensional maps

>you can stand/crouch/crawl

>full melee arsenal

>so much more than just all this

It's fucking masterpiece. I hear people claiming JA2 is better than FT, is it really?

82976d No.14821554

>>14821506

JA2 is a repetitive slog of fighting through the same generic, flat areas with always the same objective: kill everyone. It's a combat simulator, there's no semblance of level design or mission design.

a8c187 No.14821594

>>14821506

>but does it have the level of interactivity FT does?

If you install the 1.13 mod get ready for extreme levels of autism and about five pages of AK variants alone to purchase. Though I'd first do a vanilla playthrough because the amount of changes the mod introduces are massive, and even though it's fully configurable if you haven't played the game you won't have much idea what you're doing. But yes, in general you can do stealth in JA2, you can equip your mercs to suit different playstyles and roles, there's a bit of a management mechanic going on as you have to train local militas in towns you capture, as well as keeping the airport and gold mines safe from enemy counterattacks.

Jagged Alliance 2 has less narrative "meat" that Fallout Tactics, but makes up for it with a much more robust and memorable roster of characters you can hire. The story is nothing special but you get to topple a roastie and her cuck underling.

Also, get the Equilibrium mod for bugfixes and rebalancing and play Silent Storm as well if you're looking for more turn based squad tactics.

Well shit I remember blowing up houses in Silent Storm, but it didn't impress me as FT did.

I'm not sure I understand. If it's about cramming tons of shit into the game and have it all be functional then a number of open world games would do the trick, namely the first two Arkham games. I know a lot of people here are bitter towards those because they popularized cancer like wallhack vision and Arkham combat, but they were pretty mind-blowing when they came out before everybody else started doing to same thing but worse.

Then there's the more obvious western RPGs that have a little bit of everything, if a pretty clunky, like Deus Ex or Alpha Protocol.
