Only thing I remember is, that capsule containing Might and Ray is real. It can't be in main mode, so probably that new mode thing will unlock those characters. No other explanations here.

levels can take a fuckload of time to make depending on how much thought goes into everything. sonic levels in particular need a lot of time spent on playtesting because otherwise people would die to instadeath obstacles they cant see or wont know where to go. there were a lot of reused themes but they also made them twice as big. and thats just level design, its a creative field and therefore solutions "come" to you. art, music, 'fullness' of level design, it cannot really be rushed and the fact it turned out as good as it did is indicative of them spending a lot of time out of passion

A lot of the production of the classic stages involved porting the old maps then restructuring from there. Some elements were just left in, mostly since it's easier to block off unused areas than cut them out and risk breaking parts of the game.
