We've all heard about hidden gems, they are games that are considered to be great but underrated. But this subject has been talked to death, so I propose we talk about games with good/fun mechanics that are hard to get into due to visuals, plot, difficulty or gameplay.

For example i recently started to play The 7th Saga, a game known to have been fucked with during localization, the localization team made the game absurdly hard by doubling the enemy HP, DEF and ATK to the point of making 2 of the 7 selectable characters useless and making some bosses a fucking huge pain.

But at the same time this helps one of the mechanics of the game that makes some of the other 6 apprentices (who are actually competing against you to get the macguffin and can challenge you to take it from you) a lot more threatening and scary, it also helps to increase tension knowing that your companion could betray you while collecting the macguffins or during some plot points.

So /v/, do you have any rough gem that you would like to talk about?

Many NES games are like this, expecially the OG Zelda. Other candidates are Metroid and Simon's Quest.

"Cinematic platformers" on the SNES are good too, but a pain in the ass to play due to the slow responses from the character.

Dragon View for the SNES , cringey dialogue, kind of shit visuals, but still fun to play, and very underrated.

Invader for the GBA ←– not a fan of shmups but this game is sick, challenging, has tons of style and plays great…

Battle Bull for the game boy was very fun. You pilot a bulldozer that kills rogue bulldozers by shoving blocks into them. Every type of rogue dozer has a set pattern so you can really plan your moves around. You spend money on upgrades for your dozer as you earn it through kills and progress. The balance on the items is very rough though. A speed upgrade is all but necessary to play the game beyond the first levels. Pushing blocks takes like a second since you push the block until they actually start moving, this can be reduced with a better shovel. While it gives the game difficulty by means of managing your shoves, you're on a tight timer and need the top shovel to move blocks instantly for the latter levels, defeating the purpose. The jump drives are amusing to use, but they are mutually exclusive with weapons, which break the game open (specially the missile launcher, that pierces through all blocks).
