Yeah DS games are a natural fit for mobile since they already make use of the touchscreen and are completely free of microtransactions and adcancer. Ghost Trick and the Professor Layton titles are some of my favorites to emulate since they make heavy use of the touch controls and are fantastic games in their own right. A quick Layton puzzle is such a comfy way to pass time on the tube.

Guild of Dungeoneering is amazing. It was a fun game on PC, but I dropped it eventually thinking "I would love to have this on the go". I eventually got the mobile version from Humble Bundle and had countless hours of enjoyment, until I eventually beat it.
Since then, I had nothing. GTAs are fun, but the controls obviously suck, not to mention I'm always going for smallest available phones, which means a lot of proper touch-based games are also borderline unplayable.I guess Worms is a bit of fun, but even in that game the controls are awful.
I wish touch-based phones never became a thing, Java games were the shit.

Downwell has a mobile port and is pretty damn great, not sure how good the controls are, I assume it uses tilt+tap which probably works okay I guess. Besides that if you like Pixel Dungeon I remember hearing that Brogue had an Android port though you need to sideload the APK as the guy maintaining it didn't want his address being displayed on the store.

>Ittle Dew
Very solid puzzle adventure game with a charming artstyle and sense of humor. Interesting nonlinear style where the 3 items you find can be found in any order, have interesting interactions with each other, and you can complete the game with any combination of two. Don't get Ittle Dew 2 though, that one sucks because they took the nonlinear bit too far and made all the puzzles incredibly shallow and uninteresting.
>Punch Quest
Basic arcade style infinite runner game. With punching. Pretty damn fun in my opinion, despite most infinite runners being boring. Punch Quest keeps it interesting with combos, customizable skills, and satisfyingly fun punch mechanics.
>Psycard
Do you like minesweeper? If yes, play this game immediately. If no, I think you have shit taste but whatever.
>To Arms!!
If you like deck building games, I suggest you check this one out. Simple, no-frills solitaire deck building and resource management at its finest. I think it's free with no microtransactions too, so that's nice.
>Underhand
Manage an evil cult. Mostly just resource management and gets a little too easy and lacking in late-game content, but great fun while it lasts. Also free with no microtransactions iirc.
>Galaxy Trucker
Based off the board game of the same name. Assemble a spaceship out of spare parts and hope it doesn't fall apart on the way.
>Ridiculous Fishing
You've probably heard of this already but if you haven't, it's fun. Dodge fish on the way down, collect them on the way up, shoot the hell out of them when they get to the surface. Fair warning though, this is not great for playing in a car or on a bus, since it uses tilt controls.

Oh right one other thing about Psycard: if you exit the app before going back to the callendar, it won't save, allowing you to savescum. This is technically cheating, but honestly if you don't want the game to be incredibly frustrating and force you to play the same stuff over and over when you lose, you should probably do it anyway.

Instead of onscreen buttons for movement, it uses a system they call Pro Swipe. You can put your thumb anywhere on the screen and drag it, and it'll move you in that direction, meaning you don't have to go "back to neutral". It's not as good as a joystick but it's really, really close. Another game by the same dev, Wayward Souls, uses a similar system for attacking as well, and that game is ok but gets bogged down in an overly grindy level-up system where you get exp way too slowly and have to level each character up individually.

I like battle heart. It's a super simple real time strategy RPG. It's like a super condensed Baldur's gate where you drag your party members over to enemies or other party members to interact. It's super simple but can get really intense in the later levels. Costs absolutely nothing to play. Doesn't even have ads I think. Really fun galittle game.

I have a personal modded version of Shattered PD. I did some neat things to spice up the game like adding adjectives to items (weighted = more damage but higher str requirement, flimsy is opposite) that co-exist with enchantments. Also replaced the Rogue's freerunner class with Tomb Raider (better chance of finding upgraded items at the cost of higher curse chance, and passive detect extended to 2 spaces away). Updated the Battlemage subclass to have a chance on using a wand of temporarily enchanting the currently held weapon with an enchantment roughly matching the wand (fireblast wand = blazing for example). Game is a lot more enjoyable now.

Very late answer but, the guy who ported Nethack makes very good use of touchscreen. You can just touch the doors to open them, touch the items to pick them up, etc. And have a small UI at the bottom for other stuff. If you're gonna play games on your cell phone, I suggest getting a Bluetooth controller, and sticking to only the following three things:
1. Ports from other platforms (Star Wars KotOR, GTA Series, Crazy Taxi, etc.)
2. Unofficial sourceports (Doom, Quake, Xash3D for Half-Life, OpenMW for Morrowind, etc.)
3. Emulators (Drastic, PPSSPP, Retroarch, etc.)
If you choose to deviate from any of these three categories, you won't have a good time and you might as well be playing Clash of Fags or whatever the gachashit retards and normalfags in your local area consider the flavor of the week (even though every game in that genre plays the same).
