I like how the best Metal Slug Designs are full of juxtapositions, silly yet imposing, cartoony yet incredibly detailed. I hope that thread continues into the future, instead of 5/6/7's more serious designs.

The first three Metal Slugs were developed by Nazca Corporation, a team that was unofficially formed out of Irem employees, one of SNK's partner studios.

Its developers disbanded after MS3, and out of all of them, only two people openly identified themselves as being part of the original team. Since all the other devs used pseudonyms instead of their actual names in the games' credit sequences due to prohibitive 90's japan vidya laws, they all vanished from the map, and to this day nobody knows who they are. From MS4 onward, Metal Slug was developed by many different teams, none of who could provide the same quality or feeling the first three games had, hence why so many assets are reused. Hardly, if ever, do we see new spritework in any MS game after 3 for this exact reason.

If you ask anyone who created Metal Slug, they'll say it was SNK. So little do people know who actually did it, not even Nazca's logo can be found anywhere in the games save for the ending credits. Not even the internet can give you that answer. They were essentially forgotten. Metal Slug as we know and love was made by a very obscure developing team comprised almost entirely of anonymous people who disappeared from history, seventeen years ago.

And it's never coming back.

SNK still had many talented sprite artists after MS3, I wouldn't be surprised if the guys who did the last 2d KoF include a good chunk of the Metal Slug team.

I really fucking hope so anyways.

MS 4, Advance, 5, 6 and 7 are pretty decent anyway, except for the lack of content in 4, and the lack of silly stuff and detailed backgrounds in the rest.

I'd honestly be happy if they just crammed all the content we've been drip fed since 4 into a single game and released it MS4 style, considering it would have a much bigger sprite pool to work with this time.

I don't play franchises, I play games. Nazca/Irem shit was magical, it's why every other goddamn arcade in Japan has 3, X or 1 as a cabinet. You can't compare the GBA to an arcade game the devs themselves put their hearts into and didn't even bother putting their names out even when it became acceptable to do so. 6 is a fucking afterthought, you can tell from the long, drawn out cutscenes they were just trying to make something that wasn't shit instead of making a damn good arcade game.

I'll have to disagree with you there, I might agree the game's devs were overworked, or inexperienced, but you can clearly tell they cared about what they were doing, specially in the little details, like how the platform were you fight the worm boss is the big Shiee from MS3 except with a platform instead of the main gun, or how Clark and Ralf can do Vulcan Punches and The Argentinian Backbreaker for no real reason other than it looks cool.

Homage shit for the same game series isn't something you praise a game for unless you're a fucking retard, that goes for franchise cuckoos or cuckolds, you don't praise Gaylo past 3 just because you play as Master Chief, you play it for quality new content (which does not exist, retreads are not fun or productive). I understand if you treat it as a corporate product like Neptunia you would enjoy it but the spark is fucking dead.

I think I have begun to unravel this mystery. If you've ever played La Pucelle Tactics, you can see that the animation work is very similar to Metal Slug's style. Lots of detailed animations for both main characters and enemies alike, and almost the same humor, too. Something about the animations gives off that distinct "life-like" appearance.
