Why is it shit? The only bad thing I can think of is that it pioneered the regenerating health and weapon limits that are so popular today, but those mechanics made sense within the context of the game itself: The game has alot of wide open areas which can make scavenging for health kits pretty frustrating, the regenerating shield is a decent way to get around this and the overall great level design of the games makes this mechanic work really well, most other games just have it as a lazy excuse for shit level design. As for weapon limits: the game was optimized for a controller and going through 8 or 9 weapons with it is not very intuitive, the two weapon limit allows for the game to be much faster paced and overall much more fun.

It's basically a shooter where you battle against varied monsters in Egyptian or Mesopotamian ruins, for instance. Either against sneaky fucks that spawn the moment you grab a little health boost in tight places or (and most of the time) against a really (really) big group of varied aliens (it goes from skeleton horse-bull things to giant human scorpions with machine guns, to the iconic headless kamikaze) that you mow down with varied weapons on open areas. There is also hidden secrets that go from the really helpful health bonus to the inconvenient trap, but they are more than just the "cracked destructible wall" and are in general pretty silly.
I would consider the best ones to be the First and Second Encounters (aka TFE and TSE). They're basically the core of Serious Sam and this is where you should start. I prefer the Second Encounter, since it has a little more variety in weapons, enemies and maps.
Serious Sam 2 takes a cartoonish tone, cut with little cinematics that are as comfy and fun as they are badly animated. Some hate it, some like it, I'd just say it's different even if it keeps the general feeling of Serious Sam.
Serious Sam 3 BFE (which is a prologue to TFE and TSE) is the worst in my opinion, but it doesn't mean it's bad, not at all, it's just that it starts really slowly, and you might have to spend 1-2 hours against hit-scan enemies before getting to some real Serious Sam action.
There were also console exclusives, such as the Next Encounter, or Serious Sam Advance, and indie spinoffs such as the light RPG The Random Encounter and the top-down Serious Sam's Bogus Detour, but I never played those.
One more thing: play it on Hard or Serious, because you're not a tourist.

My favorite is the good old vanilla Second Encounter. If you don't like the simpler graphics of the originals, you can play the HD versions of both First and Second encounter, the only things changed about them are graphics and HUD, gameplay remained untouched afaik.
It's similar to Doom, but it's pretty much Doom x 10 : bigger maps, more weapons, fuckload more enemies, just as many, if not more, secrets. Best way I can put it is it's a bastard child of NUTS.wad, Duke Nukem and Rakija.
