nuDoom and nu-Id really frustrate me. that's all I can describe them both as right now, "frustrating". Because nuDoom is a game that really fucking wants you to like it, the presentation, the new tech.etc but it ends up falling flat as a glorified tech demo for the new Id Tech Engine. And that also frustrates me, because the new Id Tech Engine was clearly not made to be modular. It has a command line interface that superficially resembles an Id- Tech/derived Engine like Source, but it also has no proper development tools available. Snapmap is complete shit. It has way too much CryEngine influence from Tiago Sousa who replaced Carmack as head of R&D.
I think my frustration comes from the fact it very clearly is uninspired, the game and the game engines as well. Id Tech as a game engine lacks a real purpose. I mean, its not like third party studios are flocking to it right now. And nuDoom could've been made with any other game engine and it would've been the same thing. I know it sounds like I'm going off about what is supposed to be just a set of development tools but game engines themselves have become a part of a games identity nowadays and I think Id Tech pioneered this mindset, for better or for worse. I just don't think the dev team has any kind of fucking clue.
e89ab1 No.14776204
>>14776193
Oh yeah, and sage because I'm samefagging and still not done going off about the game engine used in nuDoom. The CLI is clearly a superficial tacked on afterthought and acts as a cheating interface purely. Older Id Tech engines interface had debugging purposes. It's obvious the nuDoom developers used external tools for debugging and just tacked on the interface to make it feel like it has any kind of legacy to old Id games

I went to QuakeCon with my dad in 2010 and sat through Carmack's lecture because I am a legitimate programmer now and I sought to broaden my knowledge base in any way possible, plus it had a novel appeal. During the Q&A after I asked about megatextures and what he thinks about it since there has been some time after launch. If I recall correctly his response were "hard drives aren't fast enough," and my reaction was "Carmack, I…" Even my college freshman ass knew you had to design software for the hardware you're selling it on and not base it on some idealistic hope that people will play your game again in 5 or 6 years.

I liked the enemy designs and the low TTK. People forget that classic Doom had many levels filled with enemies that die in two or less shotgun shells. And by the time you're fighting tougher enemies, you have better weapons. What I didn't like was that the levels were literal corridors and the driving sections were… questionable. I did feel like it was a game that was close to being genuinely good though.

Carmack was never much of a director he was the tech guy. I think they were probably honest about his role in making the game. Rage was a solid game it played decently it just didn't have any hook to it. A sequel could be really good but we're talking about the modern western industry so it will be even more generic somehow. Somehow, I did like it, because at least you spend most of the time shooting stuff, but anything else was just disappointing.
Knowing it's nu-ID, Rage 2 is probably going to be underwhelming too. Maybe they've learned from their mistakes and give us:
>the opportunity to revisit levels
>less corridors. Seriously, even the fucking open world was corridors
>more shit to do on open world than just destroying bandit vehicles and jumping everywhere to kill drones
>a better feeling with weapons, the shotgun had too much spread and the AK was a peashooter when using basic ammo, but the grenade shells and the Authority rifle with Feltrite ammo felt nice enough
>seeing the villain in the game, and also fighting the cunt
>actual fucking difficulty, even "Terrifying Nightmare" felt like Call of Duty on Recruit
>actually being able to dick the chick you save fucking DLC giving me blue balls
>an interface on PC thought for PC and not consolized (what the fuck was that weapon/ammo wheel)
>less auto-fellatio, there was Doom/Quake advertisements everywhere in the first game
>more enemy variety other than CQC/ranged/armor/mutant. Animal mutants could be a thing, for instance, and they even tried with the jetpack cunts in the DLC
and many other shit, but I wouldn't push my luck. If anything, they'll probably go the way of Wolfenstein: the New Cuckosus and give us 30 minutes of actual shooting in 6 hours of cinematics and walking levels.

Looking at the promotional images gives me weird feelings. I have a feeling this is going to run the way off Watch_Dogs 2. First game attempts to set up a world seriously and diversify itself from other games; meanwhile the second game is going to shift in tones entirely to be wacky and colourful. Which is a fine shift? Rage was essentially chinese knock of Mad Max with sprinkles of Doom 3; while being colourless and pretty boring. I can see why they want to try it again from a different stylistic approach. The Mad Max game also did moderately well following after a widely acclaimed movie, and the promotional images give me a brit punk circa "Sex Pistol's shocking everyone" vibe; I'm interested to say the least.

Fun Fact: According to an interview circa-2009 it was revealed that the PS3 was the lead platform for development, which was uncommon for multiplats… and probably explains a lot about its technical shortcomings.
The PS3 might have had the cell processor, but Sony cheaped the fuck out on their video chip compared to the 360, which meant devs had to depend more-heavily on the processor for visual fidelity. Part of the reason why it was such an asspain to develop for.

RAGE came around the dusk of desaturated stark contasted brown games of that generation. For the type of setting RAGE is, the color choices it needs are vivid oranges and reds against some deep shaded blues and cyans, with maybe a sprinkling of yellows for highlights. Magenta Pinks / Green is not the color choices for a post-apocalypse, no matter how punk it is.
Pic related is a quickie color balance of a screenshot nabbed online for an idea of saturating a RAGE game. Not the best take, but an idea.

All I remember were the trolls that moved around way too much, the inappropriate, but chunky sounding authority armors (I'm talking about hte sound they made when they got hit by a bullet), a milky grey boss fight with a big guy, extremely linear progression with minute secrets, water and steam screen effects, automated item collection that made it feel like you were picking up caches of items instead of individual parts like a proper scavenger, unnecessary races and funny physics when you hit a bump in a quad bike.

You know what bothers me even more with this trailer? It's how they royally fuck up the way they are selling the game right now.
The trailer in >>14789177 for Rage 1 gives a setting, some action, some rhythm. Someone looks at it, and he could be at least curious about what is the authority, what is up with the meteorite and the guy getting freezed, how does the gameplay feel like with that blade boomerang, all of that. Sure, it isn't much and it's pretty generic, but at least they tried to think about the pace and the content of their trailer, and it gives elements of what the game will feel like.
In >>14788940, there is basically nothing even remotely attractive, and I'm not only talking about the bunch of horrible-looking actors with no names to their characters being idiots on camera. The scenery in the background is not put into focus once since you have actors running around screaming and looking autistic, there's some unbearable music from the early days of Youtube playing on the background, there's no dialogue, and there's only randomness and pink colors. There's basically no content, no setting, no feel. You can't be attracted to that, just confused.
I kind of wish for a better trailer, at least it would give more indications. Right now, they are not trying at all to the point that pirating the game wouldn't even cross my mind.

Unlike with Rage 2, the teaser for that game actually made it appealing with it's "punk" atmosphere and everything about it being fun instead of in-your-face. However, any interest I had in that game was lost the moment the marketing became "It is a video game so we don't have to explain shit."

Unashamed looks fun, and what Rage 1 was going to be
Fun Fact: RAGE 1 was going to be open world etc until it got in the way of Carmack's "Vision" of "Narrative driven gameplay" because the man had a hard on for Gabe Newells game design, and with a budget already bloated out of control the stripped out most of the open world and just tuned up the narrative sections
After it sold like shit (Understandably) work started on nuDOOM and Carmack again kept sticking his dick where it didn't belong, and wanted to make another version of Doom 3 but with even more narrative attached to it because not only was Gabe his idol but Visceral Games for Dead Space and he wanted to make sort of a mix of all those concepts together, where they would be this huge war of humans vs demons and there would be good and bad demons/humans alike as you explored what it was to be "Good vs Evil, if we all have evil inside"
After he left literally all the work he forced into nuDoom was thrown in the recycle bin and they made a version of Doom that is all balls and no soft fuzz which was one of the best PC games I've played in years
As it is right now this is being done by Avalanche Studios and I swear I see People Can Fly influences in the gameplay along with Avalanche Team B which did Mad Max, but in the end I'd want to know is it Team B working on this, Mad Max being a sleeper gem of 2015 and like the most optimized PC port ever, or Team A that could not only fix the most basic of bugs in Just Cause 3 for over a year to the point the new minimum requirement to play is now 32gig because they could never track down the memory leak but left the game in a broken state and called it a day

I've been following Id development for years, Doom had two minor reworks and then the full rework after Carmack left without his influence
In house it was so bad the programmers who hated it called it "Call of Doom" because it was just tons of interconnected cinematic scenes, automated car driving on rail sections where you just sat there and shot at shit etc etc

Let me also add that Wolfenstein The New Order was shipped as is as it was too far along in development, and Carmack was very forceful in having cinematic and emotional moments in it, and the reason for his depature was because he demanded Wolfenstein and nuDoom as it was ATM to be on Oculus so it could be an even more "Immersive experience" but Zenimax outright refused so he left

I played it late and I didn't think it was too bad, like I said though Shotgun rules all and other weapons blow
The only things I remember about Rage though was the Shotgun, the power dam or cliff or whatever, the bloodsport arena show as the guy attempts to be the game show announcer from Smash TV, the very last mission and ending where you basically wake up all the "Enhanced" humans like you who went into Cyro before the meteor fell, and some big gas iron fire city with a sewer
>>14795280
I call it Fallout with Cars, but where Fallout you can loot entire cities and find nothing of value other than a few magazines to boost states, Mad Max every objective is clearly listed/marked on the map for what you need to see/do to progress and is far less aimless
The only thing I hated about the game is how damn slow your car is off road, and like Fallout 3/New Vegas/4 I love finding old postcards etc and tells about the day to day lives of watching the world fall into ruin, like family photo's only 30 years old on a ledge with an umbrella indicating that used to be on the edge of a lake surrounded by a huge forest etc

the original doom isn't exactly known for dumping dozens of enemies on screen outside of a few exceptions. It's mostly about careful placement of a few to create a specific type of game play experience and reward players who figure out how best to approach the problem. doom 2 had more hordeshit sections and serious sam turned hordeshit into its own shitty genre which is unfortunately conflated with old school shooters despite coming out the same time as halo.

Every single trailer and article I saw about the original RAGE did nothing to convince me it was anything more than mediocre. Sure, John Carmack was still working for id and was all about those MEGATEXTURES but interesting tech does not a good game make. When it came out every video I saw was saying it was very okay in every aspect. After Quake 4 I really didn't have much faith in id so I didn't even bother playing RAGE.
So tell me anons. Did I miss anything good by not playing it? Did you fags that played it have any faith at all that this time it will be good?

If there is a good amount of enemy variety like ogres, the glow eyed swamp men, and enemy vehicles. This game could end up being really cool. Especially if there are different factions to join. I hope you can join the high tech faction lining up those degenerates. The gun play looks cool, I like shooting games that let you double jump and shit too. There seems to be a wide variety of weapons too.
