What's the difference between a submachine gun and an assault rifle anyway?
9bfa7f No.14774335
It's supposed to be futuristic because in the future things are smaller. That's as far as their train of thought went. It's not even a bullpup rifle, which would almost certainly be a requirement for an assault rifle that tiny. Maybe they use self-stabilizing ammunition so that long rifled barrels are no longer necessary.

>>14774316
See above. Submachine guns use pistol or small caliber rounds, rifles use larger ones.
1490a3 No.14774349
The caliber. It's bullpup, so the overall gun length is shorter while still providing a certain amount of barrel length, which is why it looks like a weird SMG. However, if the cartridge is large enough you can classify it as a short barreled rifle, kinda like the AKS-74u. I forgot which caliber the Dude Sex rifle was though, but I think it was 5.56.
85b202 No.14774355
>>14774316
Very generally speaking an SMG fires a handgun round (9mm for example) whereas an assault rifle fires an intermediate cartridge, which is slightly less powerful than a full on rifle cartridge.
To answer OPs question, if it fires an intermediate cartridge it could technically be an assault rifle but its form factor certainly does more resemble an SMG.

Submachineguns were invented first as a battlefield necessity because armies needed some way to break the horrible stalemates caused by machine gun crews and artillery in WW1. They were invented for the same reason as tanks. Assault rifles were invented not out of strict necessity but as an approach to a new doctrine of warfare, one which emphasized hard hitting mobility to coincide with the existence of air support and armored companies to carry troops close to the firefight.

9bfa7f No.14774511
>>14774455
I think the reason that particular design hasn't caught on is because you have to make tighter tolerances for manufacturing the magazine. Also, the disc structure is more fragile due to the wide surface. Magazines are as important if not more so than the gun itself. If you make a mag that works well but is expensive to manufacture, you've still shot yourself in the foot because automatic guns need lots of magazines. If you make a mag that is cheap but breaks easily, no one will buy your gun because a gun is useless without a mag that can feed it. It's not impossible that this mag design could exist in the future, but I'd expect them to be made out of some sort of polycarbonate or alloy that is easy to manufacture with yet very strong.

It's a pump action with a drum mag. The rod on the bottom isn't holding the drum on, it's actually a rod that pushes a shell out of the drum. When you push the drum mag forward, it dislodges one shell into a catch level area. The drum mag then "clicks" into the rod, which pulls back along with the drum when you pull backwards on it. As the rod moves back, it pushes the previously dislodged shell into a standard pump action catch gate. Once the drum mag comes all the way back, it detaches from the rod, which slams forward from spring pressure, which also loads the shell into the barrel to be fired.

The the AK-47 was originally designed to be more or less a submachine gun. That is to say, it's role was to replace the existing submachine guns with something that could also be decent at range if needed. In modern times this philosophy is pretty much turned on its head, with accuracy at range being more of a priority, and the full-auto function being more of a panic button if you need it.
>>14774348
>Submachine guns use pistol or small caliber rounds, rifles use larger ones.
SMGs use larger caliber rounds that travel slower, such as .45, .40, 10mm, .357, and 9mm. Rifles use smaller calibers such as 7.62 or 5.56.
Unless by "smaller" you meant the length of the cartridge instead of the caliber? In that case I guess you would be correct. The reason they travel so fast is because there is more powder to burn and propel them, along with longer barrel lengths to provide more time to burn and accelerate.

Caliber just means the width of the bullet, not the size of the cartridge. Post blackpowder guns rifle cartridge are smaller caliber than pistol rounds, but the length is bigger. If you want just guess how powerful a cartridge is you're better off looking at case length (except the .38/.44specials and .45LC). Even then you're better of looking at the shooting data. Any way back to the question.
>So then what is the difference between an assault rifle and a light machine gun?
LMG has superior range*, power*, fire rate, and capacity, and has a bi-pod making it more stable firing when used compared to a assault rifle. The downsides are weight and belt ammo takes longer to reload, and may have one guy to reload the gun and other to actually fire it.
*Depends on the cartridge of LMG uses, since there are LMGs that also use the same cartridge as assault rifles

Sub-machine gun is a small machine gun, chambered for pistol cartridges. Came into existence when the only other types of hand-held weapons were pistols and bolt action rifles. Chambering a hand-held machine gun for rifle rounds would be retarded, so they used the next option - pistol rounds. This combined high volume of fire provided by a full sized machine gun with mobility of a pistol, more or less. Assault rifle came later as a solution for the lack of range and firepower of SMGs. To solve the "which one of these shit cartridges do we use" problem a new "intermediate" cartridge type was created, essentially a smaller weaker rifle round. This increased power and range of small arms without significantly compromising on mobility. Assault rifles effectively replaced submachine guns in the military. Submachine guns are still used in police because of their size and low demand for firepower. Rifles are still used as well, in two forms - battle rifles and assault rifles. They fire classic rifle rounds, they are large and heavy, and for the same reason the ammunition reserve is low, and their general usefulness is very limited, so they're special issue and you don't see them very often.

/k/ here, assault rifles are rifles that use an intermediate cartridge, are fed from a detachable magazine, have select fire capability safe, semi, and auto/burst fire, and have an effective range of no less than 300m.
Intermediate cartridges are between pistol and full power cartridges; the most common of these are the 7.62x39 used most commonly in the AK-47 and its variants, 5.45x39 used in the AK-74 and more modernized variants, and the 5.56 NATO used in the M4, M16, and other NATO assault rifles
Some examples of full power cartridges are 30-06 used in the 1906 Springfield and M1 Garand, 8mm Mauser used in the Kar 98k, 7.62x54R used in the Mosin Nagant and SVT-40, and 7.62 NATO used in the M14, G3, FAL, and others

The MP-7 still pisses me off, which retard at Valve thought that a SMG especially in such size has the capabilities to have a Automatic Grenade Launcher as a attachment? And this is not even the "best" the grenade is rotating around like it got lobbed instead of launched, in Half-Life 1 they at least bothered adding an actual GL attachment to it + reloading animation. Probably it is also the same guy that made the decision to get rid of a "dumb" rocket mode that the RPG launcher used to have by disabling the laser designator.

1st pic:It doesn't
2nd pic: it's just a point blank gun that you whack against something to fire it, the only confusion i have is where the 'trigger' is; see 1st pic for actual fist gun.
3:That's just a mp7; the grenade bit it doesn't work
4:It would work if the drum wasn't in front of the pump.

There's nothing wrong with the gunhammer, it's essentially a pepperbox on a stick. I'd imagine the small spike that sticks out of the cylinder would act as the trigger when you hit it against something. It's silly but believeable, most of the tech weapons in MH actually look like they'd work.
The rest is retarded, though. Borderlands has guns that try hard to look cool but just end up looking like someone modeled a kid's doodles of guns. And Valve is known not to understand how guns work.

The main reason the MP7 has a grenade launcher is because apparently the game was going to have a lot more guns. Like the OICW, the MP5-K and the AK-47. The OICW was going to have a grenade launcher since it does have one irl. All of these guns were cut in favor of just having the MP7 and the Combine assault rifle and they merged a lot of these together to do it. The grenade is still called "AR2_grenade" in the game's files.
Ontop of that I'd assume that when they changed the development focus of the game into being more like HL1 (Since in beta it was almost like it was a vastly different game to the original) they decided to add the grenade launcher to the smg to make it more like the first game but didn't have time or didn't think about changing the gun model.

It makes me wonder why they did not chose the AK-47 instead with the GP-25 attachment as it is a commonly enough weapon which would be a good fit for the rebels group. Or hell even recycling the SMG model from HL-1.

That's actually typical in shooters, they use it as a "generic revolver reload" animation. I always appreciated the Firearms mod for Half-Life which had individual bullet reloads for the Colt Anaconda, and you could get an upgrade that uses a speedloader for faster reloads.

No they most shooters just eject all the casings by either titling the gun up or hitting the ejector rod, not dumping entire cylinder with the casings. The only time i've ever seen that type of reload where it that makes sense is 1858 revolver because it's a black powder pistol.

It's somewhat a subjective artistic matter, but there is a difference between cool outlandish and stupid implausible. For example Metal Slug has all sort of absurd and impossible things, but there's a thoughtful attention to detail that makes it feel real. When Borderlands randomly squishes parts together with procedural generation, the effect is flat. The people making the game have zero interest in the subject matter, and no subsequently no inspiration. It's like making a concept car with wheels welded to the roof. Of all the possible concepts, it's the worst one, and if you've ever been in a car, you would think, wait how are the wheels going to spin against the ground?
This laziness characterizes everything Gearbox does though.
