Yeah, I played it then too. Its better now, but still the classical MMORPG formula. Its best played with other people for casual fun and conversation, tbh. I remember when I made a lil guild back in closed beta of like ~15 people and we all beat everything in the game to Doom Tower as a team… Good times. You and I must have different definitions for "standalone", because those two games had their own separate sites and everything. As for the story quests, I can agree for mechquest but not DragonFable. DF's were organized in neat chapters when I played, whilst mechquest was an absolute mess in terms of how the quests were organized.

I think he basically just wants them "fixed". Basically, imagine if they were made less grindy and gave players the abilities to earn dragon coins/whatever premium currency in-game. AQ, DF and MQ are essentially some of the first single player DRM games, too.
I think someone with flash know-how should look into doing this with Mechquest since they've ended support for it. I'd love to see a fixed "pirate version" of Mechquest (or the other two) with features like reduced grinding for XP and gold, no purchases needed (maybe have a tiny amount of premium currency drop from monsters), the ability to play offline etc.

You know, when I was a kid I thought his business strategem of "free to try" for his shitty flash games was incredibly jewish, but seeing what the modern industry turned into, being able to check the game out first to see what it's gameplay and tone are like before paying a lifetime twenty bucks subscription is not such a bad deal. It seems there are such things as private servers for the original three. Some guy named MentalBlock has the stuff for MechQuest and DragonFable on Github, though I haven't tested it yet and he didn't include a client ao I'm not sure how that's supposed to work. They were released in 2016, which seems to be the newest work on creating any kind of private server (besides all that AQ worlds crap)
Also there's some kind of AdventureQuest private server stuff called aquaquest but it looks less promising.

I thought AQW was interesting, I liked how the combat was real time and not instanced just because it was fresh. It was essentially a WoW clone in flash. I think the worst thing about it though was that they gave membership for it an expiration date. I think they charged $60 a year or something like that, and for that money you could have been playing the REALLY cool stuff like runescape.

Same, it's probably the insane XP curve racking up that makes the grinding and farming utterly tedious. I haven't done maths for MMORPGs for a long time, but I think at that point the XP you actually get from monsters stops constituting a considerable percentage of your level up bar and you run out of variety (at least for DF) to motivate to keep going and ignore your overall status. Thus you also get subsequently locked out of late-game content.
To add to this thread, one of the more interesting transformations
I've ever seen a game go through was DragonFable. It's a rare instance where a company willingly hands development of a game to a couple of young interns, and even rarer to see the game significantly improve under those same interns. The story direction vastly changes from AE's campy brand humor to something significantly darker and more substantial, the content, worldbuilding, and NPC dialogue balloon in scale, and music gets added making the overhauled product more worth the $20 purchase (even more ironic since the game has slacked in pushing Dragon Amulets). IIRC Artix Entertainment wasn't in a great condition financially in 2014 and they were banking on 3D to carry them out (hence why MechQuest dropped like a rock, because the last coder Ashendal left), but they SEEM to be doing better atm (at least they were able to afford a new Cintiq for one of their artists).

That's the sad truth about Artix Entertainment. They're pretty great people, but as devs they are mediocre. It always seems to be that the most junior of the bunch are the ones who do the most in terms of game mechanics and features. Some fans of AE's are delusional. I am not one of those fans. I fully see that AE put jew-esque means of gaining money in their games, and some of those means I am vehemently against. Others I fully understand as their means of making money to stay afloat and keep doing what they love (and before the crash make a damn good profit).
Since the crash AE has used mobile games and the loyal fanbase of AQW to survive. Some of their apps have been passable to relatively decent for mobile, others have not. AQ3D, the game which combines both PC and Mobile markets, is their best hope for a recovery to the level of pre-crash days. As such they've done their best to not be jewish about it (i.e. not making it mobile p2w garbage), and are constantly improving it. Still, I would be lying if I said it couldn't be vastly improved from where it is. Its infinitely better than when they started making it though.
I've said it before in this thread and I'll say it again: The best and frankly only way to play their games (and enjoy it) is with a party of friends or agreeable strangers. I've certainly had a good time doing it.

This game is fucking awful, it's got that same low-effort low-quality jank of a shitty Unity game but it's actually an original engine, which is impressively bad. Every class only has three skills and an "ultimate" that charges up while fighting, and it controls like aids because it's built for a touchscreen. It's just a shitty android version of WoW but somehow worse.

I think it is, but levelling up takes a decent amount of time. Guaranteed to go up with time, as they typically raise the level cap by ~2 levels per new area that they add (though maybe that's just when I played nonstop in closed beta before the progress wipe).
