How many people here have played Hexen 2? I haven't ever seen much discussion about it, and I think it's a rather comfy and aesthetic game (especially being a QuakeWorld fag.) Hexen 2 thread I guess.

d1f971 No.14757528

Praevus alongside the Heresiarch are the best bosses of the HeXen series. Eidolon, Korax and D'Sparil are a disappointment, just a "shoot at it until it dies"-like boss.

Regarding HeXen 2, it's a good game, although scaled down from HeXen due to the limitations of using a 3D engine back in the day, so we've got fewer enemies and smaller stages, that you can take it as a positive thing since the puzzles aren't too spread along the hub. The new classes (Assassin, Demoness) are fun to play. The only negative side to HeXen 2 is the setting, making Eidolon into a demon and using the four horsemen of the apocalypse is not very creative. The hubs also aren't innovative: Medieval, Aztec, Egyptian, Greco-Roman and Asian in the expansion. But perhaps that's my retroactive experience playing so many games with such themes so I grew tired of exploring the same aesthetic.

Post this on the retro fps thread.

There is absolutely no need to create more unnecessary threads, man.

It's in the catalog.

Look for it.

Only played the first couple hours or so. The level design is horribly bland and the combat is more annoying than fun (poor enemy design).

The game looks like shit compared to Quake, by the way. What makes Quake's visuals stand the test of time is the architecture of its levels and its use of constantly varying lighting. From what I've played of Hexen II the levels are barren and the game just looks terribly generic overall.

8668c8 No.14757560

Hexen II was one of the blandest sequels to a good game ever made.

>>14757553

This was my biggest beef with Hexen II when I have played it. Hexen had way better Level Design than fucking World 1.

>>14757531

Hexen II is kinda its own thing, sped.

Hexen 2 is a very good looking game if you don't play with texture filtering on

Hexen 2 isn't a fps you dumb faggot

I have actually been playing Hexen after playing heretic and was wondering about the sequel and now people are ITT saying its unique and some saying its bland as fuck. Very confusing but ill try it once I have played through hexen or just gotten bored with it.

I like it. All 3 are good.

Hexen 2 is solid medieval game, but Hecatomb could have been so much better, too bad id decided to go in the wrong direction

87a61d No.14757691

I found it much less tedious and confusing than Hexen 1, even if it was a bit shit overall. Hardest puzzle was figuring out what to do with the shovel in hub 1 since I completely overlooked the book that lets you use it, while the first game has an obsession with switches that do obscure things on the opposite end of the hub leading to more switches doing shit on the other end of the hub again ad infinitum. The best thing about the game is the fucking hysterical movement. You can double your speed just wiggling (don't need to jump) plus it has speed boots and the rocket launcher…

Not to crap on the game or anything but to me it doesn't look nearly as appealing as Hexen so I just never cared to play it. Feel the same way about Heretic 2. I loved Hexen and Heretic though. The look, music, enemy designs, gameplay. It was all so great.

bebe59 No.14758159

I own it but I've never gone beyond the first world. I hated it.

45bc94 No.14758230

I was really disappointed when it came out. Loved Heretic & Hexen but disliked 2.

More generally, I really hated "first gen" 3D doom-like (Quake especially). Those games felt too dark / gritty / colorless for me. I can understand why people liked them, but it wasn't my cup of tea. Only came back to those kind of games with Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Time Splitter on console, and UT / Q3 on PC.

Worst puzzle was the one with the invulnerable golem which sometimes bugs out and stays invulnerable even when you get the power to destroy it.

015e00 No.14759220

I liked it thought some of the puzzles felt rather obstuse

I got to, what I believed to be, the last world and stopped playing out of frustration. It just felt like the enemies were becoming too health spongey, which was making every encounter an exercise in tedium.

>>14757531

Yeah, that's just what we need, the board to devolve into nothing but broad general threads.

87cb60 No.14759560

Does Hexen 2 even have custom content? I've never seen any talk about that, even when the game has open source port and it's in idtech 1.

>>14757553

The first Blackmarsh is just to get your ropes on how things work. Although I do agree that game looks bland, thanks to the Quake engine, even when Raven spiced things up with breakable objects.

>>14757578

It's not a bad game, but the levels look drab, even when I first tried I wasn't thrilled. But the combat is pretty good, I was pretty thrilled fighting against werejaguars until I learned trick to cheese fights against them. But fuck those skull mages and fuck their teleportation that takes forever to come out.

I'm not sure, but FTEQCC (THE Quake C compiler to use) supports Hexen C, and TrenchBroom supports Hexen 2. I'd like to see some stuff come out of it. Does anyone happen to know where you can find the gamecode?
