I didn't play Hotel Dusk, but I did play this. You're not missing anything. It's an hour-long case with the only gameplay bits being choosing the right dialogue and clicking on all the spots during the investigation scene (think Ace Attorney but without evidence). Also, it ends on a cliffhanger despite there being no signs of continuation two years later.

Excellent work, OP.

I'll repeat some of what I said last time regarding Majikoi and Junai Road.

Contrast is the overall theme of Junai Road and it shows in absolutely everything from the setting (a quiet little oceanside town that's also home to the biggest gang war in recent history) to the heroines (cutiest of pies also being vicious animals except for Ai ) to the other characters (the sister's dual nature is hilariously on the nose with the theme) and even to the protagonist himself who, for once, has a reason for being a heroic near-pacifist who's extra calm and nice - and you can even see why the girls would find him attractive in a world otherwise filled with either cowards or victimizers.

I don't know if Majikoi has much more to it that I haven't gotten to already and I wouldn't be surprised if it did, but I'm several hours deep into each game's very long prologue and I have to say that the comedy of Majikoi, albeit top notch in a way I have never seen before, gets exhausting.

The constant theme of contrast in Junai Road makes it more interesting to me and I think it's superior in that there are a lot of genuine moments where frustration, tension and sadness are given their due share. There's breathing room for more than just comedy in Junai which gives you a better appreciation for the numerous moments of comedy and slapstick. It doesn't wear out its welcome, as opposed to Majikoi which just continually slams you with its humor.

Contrast and breathing room, tasteful tonal shifts, make me like Junai Road a lot more so far. That and the protagonist doesn't have a stupid lol randum hermit crab fetish. I like Hiroshi.

So I just hit the title card (after like 7+ hours) and honestly I think I'm in love. Junai Road gave me laughs and feelings. That moment when Napoleon Complex almost drowns and Hise rescues her and pats her on the head while she's crying about nearly dying reminds me of the tonal shifts in Grisia, where there's tons of fun comedy and outlandish things but there's room for some very touching, emotional moments.

I want to explore more of Majikoi but I'm irritated that Junai Road hasn't gotten the same kind of praise or attention despite giving me a lot more in its prologue. I guess I should continue Majikoi since I keep comparing the two but I'm getting real put off by the characters now. Nothing emotional has happened yet and there's no breathing room.

Majikoi was the hilarious and cute best friend you kinda had a crush on and could see a future with, but then her sister Junai Road came in, all flustered and trying her best. You think she's just gonna be like her older sibling since that's your first impression of her but she turns out to be different. She takes her time, speaks with you about some touching matters, encourages you to keep going and garnishes her lunchboxes with humor. She blushes when you say she's interesting and she protests, "It's n-n-not like I want you to c-care about me, b-baka!" But you know she does. She doesn't have the same self-esteem as her older sister but she still wants to show you she's worth your attention and, maybe…just maybe…your heart.

Then you walk her home and go back to her older sister, your first friend, and she has a pair of chopsticks stuck between her nostrils and lower lip while imitating a peace-sign ahegao and making ooking noises.

And she just keeps doing it.

That's how I feel right now. To be sure, I'm still liking and going through Majikoi but the characters feel so flat compared to Junai Road. Maybe the whole contrast thing spoke to me. Maybe it's just me, but I'm really getting exhausted with Majikoi and I'm still - still - in the prologue. I think I might just do Blueberry I Love You's route (because she is instantly mandatory perfect) and be done with it because I'm tired.

I'm sure I've just yet to reach that moment when Majikoi delivers. I'm sure the drama and character depth is coming but it's just taking a while. Surely Majikoi isn't just wacky(sexy) hijinks from start to finish.

What do you guys think? I don't mean to blogfag I'm just posting responses to two of the most highly recommended games in these threads since the first one. How about all of you?

>Can I get more context on this?

Because they knew Treehouse was savaging the game but kept trying to defend Nintendo's decisions despite making a more faithful translation. They even got angry at people on forums for stating this outright and justifiably slagging off Treehouse, or was it 8-something? I don't remember. All crap translation companies are the same.

Anyway, they got uppity about it and stopped the translation work or left it to someone else to finish, I think. It's been a while.

>How can you be mad about that?

Because it annoys me when people suck off others because of their "prestige" despite their terrible work. Nintendo deserved no respect and turning on the people who appreciate your work just because they're rightfully calling out the trash of someone else working on the same project is asinine.

To be fair, Jinai Road was translated only very recently.

As for Majikoi, I love it to bits, and the routes were definitely better than the prologue.

Without spoiling anything, some routes caught me off guard by rejecting usual tropes of the genre and doing something completely different, specifically that one route, people who played it know what Im talking about.

Its not all perfect, some people especially criticize Chris's route, but I personally liked all routes, even the side heroines teacher a best even though they clearly didn't have the same amount of time or effort put into them.

Not far into the choice route, and while I enjoy it, I can't shake off the feeling of a very strong 'canon barrier'. Maybe because one of the heroines is the titular characters, but it feels like to pursue other girls is not to choose a different path, but to go offroading, running over some feelings, and then finally finding another route. Rubs me a little the wrong way, but the games feel is superb otherwise.

Wow, their funding actually succeeded. For a while I thought they wouldn't make it.

To anyone who doesn't know, Kazunari Suzuki is kind of an unsung hero of the MegaTen franchise, having contributed to the lore and writing in the old days.

Personally, I'm disappointed that his current work is on a VN instead of an actual game. But I'm willing to make an exception and take interest in this VN if it ever manages to escape the Win10 prison.

Well, if nothing else,we'll at least get another great Masuko soundtrack out of this.

I thought I was reading too many happy and silly VNs so I started on Narcissu. I'm loving it so far and I'm not exactly sure why. It's a comfy kind of despair. Trying to find happiness in the smallest of things in their short lifespan. The characters don't interact much or talk about their past often but I still find them interesting. Though I'm only on Ch.2, I think I have a good grasp on who these characters are. I'm loving the music too. The Silver Coupe has to be my favorite song so far.

Shit, well here I go looking for another dl. How big are the changes between stay night and realta nua besides the voices and no H scenes? I see people complain about the soundtrack but not a lot like other game "remakes". The reason I'm asking is because I like to play the original version of games before deciding to play the "enhanced version" that usually changes a lot. Is this the case for Realta Nua or are the changes welcome to the game? fuck, I'm asking a lot of questions

Just play the original with the H-scenes, overall the game itself isn't that fantastic for how much content they shove in there, the remakes just look like they changed a few things to be more "market friendly" like taking out the H-scenes. Also don't look for a specific .dll just get another copy of the download, there are hundreds of them out there because of the popularity of F/SN. Also does anybody know if there is any decent fan translation for Rance 03, since I wanna play it with updated CG's and don't know enough nip to play it on my own yet.

Yes to all three points, the VN has a lot more impact to it, like off of the top of my head I remember getting chills from the Jellyman's Report where the anime bit was just kinda "Ew".

I played the Vn before whatching the show but I'd still recommend you give it a go. The pacing is super slow for the first six chapters but that causes real investment. All of the endings have some strong impact. The game had me in tears in most and all of them are worth seeing.

There is an excellent, spoiler-free, guide online so as to not waste your time having to replay the game and still get all endings.

I literally just downloaded Zero and will start it now. I'll report back later.

I played it. It's standard fare story-wise. If you've ever played a VN before, you can tell, at a glance, what these two girls' character arcs are and you'd be 100% correct. Fairly well-written, as well, though nothing spectacular. And it's got pretty good art.

Time travel is involved and he already created a time machine in the future, so he's unable to die no matter what until that happens. Or something like that. I don't remember the exact details but the important point is that as it has already been established that he does something in the future of that timeline, he won't die until he does do it. At some point he reveals that to the very obvious bad guy, who gladly uses it to his advantage in interrogation.

Also Zero really isn't very good at all, because it only serves to cheapen the original story. The anime is changing things, but it will still never be good unless they completely, and I mean completely, change the ending.

If you haven't given yourself up willingly then you haven't given up your chastity. Your "chastity" in terms of your hymen is gone, sure, as is you official first time, but your actual chastity hasn't been lost since that would make you unchaste - which, by definition, means you're a slut.

Look:

Chaste - Morally pure in thought or conduct; decent and modest.

Modest - observing the proprieties of dress and behavior : decent, neither bold nor self-assertive

Chastity - the quality or state of being chaste

Pure - 3 A: free from moral fault or guilt (the other definitions refer to material purity, as in genetic purity, pure physical composition, etc.)

Are rape victims guilty of something for being raped? Did they commit a wrong by being raped?

Is a person made immoral, immodest and indecent by being raped?

>inb4 but muh pathetic studies

I don't care about "potential long-term effects of sexual trauma on a victim's behavior". I mean, by definition of having been raped, are they immediately made immodest and immoral?

Of course not. They have to choose to be immoral and immodest. They have to choose to be a slut, a whore, by casting aside their chastity/pursuit of chastity. By ceasing to be chaste they become unchaste, and thus become immoral, immodest and - by enacting such wrong - become impure.

>inb4 but they're made indecent by being raped cuz naked and railed

Indecent in the context of thought and conduct, as per the definition of chaste.

tl;dr Rape victims can choose to become impure, but they aren't impure because they were raped.

One thing i truly truly hate about Tumblr and all these SJW's is how they pretend to be fanbases of these franchises and try to co-opt every single thing they are apart of to fit their morality system. This was not the first time this has happened either(remember the Evangelicals of the 90's and 00's with their whole entire everything is a sin if you did this or watched that?) Its the same shit here.

Notice how whenever the point is even brought in that this was always in the game that they push the moralfag card? For fucks sake these people need to have helicopter rides.

I will give you some help here it might be a lot but its worth noting this whole thing down especially for newcomers. I did all this shit on my own without having to consult random Japanese places.

Memrise. Basically SRS

1. Hiragana+ -> Katakana + (alphabet)

2.After both are done, learn 6k Vocab and Grammer N5-N3(there is individual classes for this) Vocab is the legos and Grammar is the blueprints of how to use the legos properly when making sentences you are fucked if you dont learn both.

3. After this learn Japanese sentences in the app or look it up on desktop if you can not find a course on it. It helps you build more on how to create sentences much more efficiently.

Some extras to help you build on: Book: Japanese The Manga Way(helps a lot with grammar) and KawaJappa Cure Dolly on Youtube(great with beginner grammar and understanding sentence structures which could be confusing with certain books breaks it down easily and also some mistakes textbooks make on Particles) Both are good beginner points. But i would recommend doing this after you have Hirgana, Katakana, some vocab. Then you just learn Grammar and Vocab together honestly. You will know what i mean when you get there.

Lastly Texthookers on Visual Novels if at all possible after two years of learning under your belt to understand certain words or sentences. They do help as you keep learning on SRS. If you dislike Memrise go with Anki but Memrise its too simple for me to really give it up.

Warning this may take 2-4 years but its worth it. I am keeping myself immersed in video games imports, VN's and sometimes changing my Steam Games in Japanese language to keep up also on Crunchyroll if you have a premium pass you can turn off subtitles on certain anime and hear Japanese only. I would recommend doing this after a year or two you should be far enough in both Vocab and Grammar to make some sense of what is going on. Also to end off do not feel bad if you dont know everything its only natural it takes time you are going to mess up and feel like you are hitting a wall. But a long as you practice daily and keep moving even review you will get there in the long run.

I can not blame you at all. I think it's just that you need to take a break from it all and focus on one thing at a time. I am learning Japanese and maintaining what little friendship I have left. But I still find the the time to watch 2 episodes a day and/or do a marathon every Friday and Saturday to finish the stuff I need to get done. I usually switch between video games and anime as to not get burned out completely. It's helped me when I had issues of procrastination.

Sooner you get it that translation is localization the less of a headache it will cause you. With Japanese for example, people don't talk like Japanese people in English unless they are specifically designed to be a Japanese person trying to speak English and sounding like he's fresh off the boat – English people talk like English people, that includes their idioms, their contractions and all manners of stupid grammar that is downright untranslatable between English and Japanese unless you go 'Apple = orange' and try to match the context of what is written. Aka, character said a strictly Japanese saying that makes no sense in English, so you 'translate' that by using an English saying that matches the same context that the original was trying to convey in its words. This is also done in regards to designing a character to speak a certain way that makes sense for the personality you're going with them. Azusa from the Tsujidou-san visual novels and Dick Gumshoe from Pheonix Wright both have a specific way they speak in Japanese that is 'translated' to give them a speech pattern that makes them start certain words with [S'].

Let's pretend for one second that translation is, in fact, localization. If that was the case, then it has to account for filthy gaijin's lack of understanding of japanese principles, culture or history. It has to swap out the characters's personalities, voices, lines, sprites, overall visuals, game logic and include achievements. Swapping out the plot for a more gung-ho "BADASS ADVENTURES" one is near-mandatory too. Finally, it has to have an online multiplayer mode in order to attract a foreigner audience. This is a business model that is tried and true, after all.

And before you ask, I am a certified expert on japanese culture - my collection spans several hundred ka-tanas and anime dolls that you monkeys call "figmas".

Millennials are so egoistic and poorly read that they think not getting something is a failure on the author's part, so they must convert everything into the lowest common denominator of cultural garbage. Imagine not being willing to learn the context of the story you are reading.

Now you're just using a fallacy. You are not looking to make A to B and eventually Z; you are looking to make A to B, but, knowing that A cannot and never will be 100% of B, reason that B must have its own personal changes to match what is is the context – the true message conveyed in the words – the original is trying to tell. Now, you might wonder how that justifies changing what Alice says here when Reiji says he is a fan of the same thing she is a fan of:

Aka, she says '同志' once, which is what 'A fellow… fan…' is, and then says '同志!' again, this time with more joy in her voice and excitement, which is instead now translated to 'Squee…!' Should could have just said 'A fellow… fan…!' in english, but in this case 'Squee…!' conveys that she is ever as overjoyed to learn of the information Reiji just said to her without having to say the same thing twice. As, english saying something like 'You like… flowers…' 'You like flowers!' actually sounds awkward as fuck and something an weirdo might say.

>Should could have just said 'A fellow… fan…!' in english, but in this case 'Squee…!' conveys that she is ever as overjoyed to learn of the information Reiji just said to her without having to say the same thing twice.

Which, if I might add, just because the character said something twice does not mean you have to be stickler/fucking robot and translate it as the character saying the same message twice. Japanese LOVE to repeat themselves, a lot even; it is a cultural norm to them. As I have learned when working with a translator who often was beside himself in agony over how many times Japanese writers love to write things once and then once again. Most of the time he would outright just omit the repeated line because it was not important. In the case of that individual line said by Alice there, it cannot be removed because it will quite literally change the game's script on a level besides just writing words into a line. Thus you have a case where the translator, or maybe even the editor, just went 'fuck it' and opted for her to say something alternative in English to display her overjoyed expression. This isn't a crime. It's just another way of delivering the message – that Alice is excited to hear what Reiji just told her.

Who the fuck gives a shit if subtitles don't sound like people speaking? This isnt an english dub, you are translating what the character said.

If she said this, then you translate what she fucking said into text to the best of your ability and the ability of the language you are translating it to.

"It sounds awkward" and "nobody speaks like that" are excuses to change the meaning of the sentence and put your shitty spin on text that was written by the author, the person im reading a work of, not you, a shitty "translator" who has zero respect of that authors work.

The stance of learn nip or eat feces written by localizers is an absurd one because translations that didnt shit on the original work existed for decades, and while Im not going to argue those were perfect, they didnt alter characterization, personality, and other things that are the reasons Im reading the thing Im reading.

As for cultural differences, you are reading a thing made by a japanese author, living in japan, most likely set in japan, for japanese people. To not know and especially to not want to know anything about japanese culture, while enjoying those works, is absurd and defeats the entire poing of consuming them in the first place, as you might as well just go ahead and read/play/watch something made by a culture you are already familiar with.

It betrays something about the character that is delivering a message. In other words, translator makes lines instead of original creator in that case. You might argue that it's just a line here and there, some things changed here and there with how character acts, like removing/replacing honorifics and stuff and cherrypick a few successful examples, BUT CONSIDER

Because, like said, translating what a Japanese person says, in their way of speaking, to English gives you bad English. This is part of the reason why MTL is dogshit, by the way, because when it is giving you as accurate of a translation as it gives it is still giving you what the Japanese is in English, and it reads like shit.

No. But the translator I worked with did. Shit drove him crazy. That's not the aim at all. The point is to capture the character's personality, even with a change in the dialogue. A case of 'What would this character say in English with the established personality we have with them?' Thus Alice going 'squee…!' fits because Alice is that type of person to say that if she would.

And as for 'ALMOST ALL TRANSLATORS ARE FUCKUPS WHILE JAPS UNIRONICALLY PUT LIFE INTO THEIR WORK,' you realize most of these guys writing stories for these shitty VNs are failures as writers right? Well, unless the guys in charge of localizing are in touch with the writers themselves and they give them bullet points as to what makes that character what they are, then you just have to depend on the personality established by the characters in the prose readily available. Most of these characters in visual novels are so cliche that you really don't have to think deep on what their 'English voice' would be. I do think that working hand-in-hand with the original writers in understanding what a character's personality is much better, though. But at that point you do kind of need either an interpreter for the writer or the writer themselves need to know english, but at that point why wouldn't the writer just write his story in english as well, and that brings to question if what you're getting from the writer's words isn't just what the interpreter has 'localized' himself in his 'translation' of the writer's words – it's a never ending slope, and I'm sure not even the original writers themselves give all too much of a single fuck at the end of the day.

>Does this English match the personality of the character who is saying it?'

No. Nip culture is very meek and polite and these charcters would react with shock to such non-sexual vulgarities being uttered in a cheery context. There is a rough around the edges tomboy in the VN, but rather than accentuate her personality in relation to more reserved characters and more reserved norms in nip society, almost fucking everyone curses like a sailor.

>Hate to break it to you, but translation is not about 1:1

Nice strawman. I take it you like to add "spice" to your meals? They're not just taking liberties to replace more boring direct translation with spicier adjectives, they're inserting shit that wasn't there in the first place. The 1:1 arguement is disingenuous and you know it considering I outlined something that knocks it flat on it's face in one of the very posts you responded to. "Argiato" obviously means "thanks" or "thank you" or possibly other words and phrases of a similar meaning if one is liberal with translation. "Arigato" was translated to "damn right, thanks". "Damn right" was not there, nor was there anything there that could even be liberally interpreted as meaning "damn right", "Yes", "I know", or other similar words and phrases in English. This and many other things are clear instances of the translator(s) inserting their own bullshit and thus altering the character's personality which, regardless of whether anyone thinks it's an improvement or it "fits the character", it is not the job of a fucking translator to insert their own bullshit, especially in places where there was no dialogue to begin with.

>>14839515

>Aka, character said a strictly Japanese saying that makes no sense in English, so you 'translate' that by using an English saying that matches the same context that the original was trying to convey in its words.

No. This shit is how we get pyschopathic characters who chant "Hate" like a mantra turned into a rainbow of curses, vulgarities, and slurs all expressing "hate" in different ways that wouldn't fit the character no matter how angry they are.

>Japanese LOVE to repeat themselves, a lot even; it is a cultural norm to them.

What makes it wrong to convey a foreign cultural norm as is? Are you the kind of nigger who changes riceballs to jelly donuts because "to a Westerner, someone who would eat plain rice wrapped in seaweed would be a weirdo"?

>localization

Don't fall for the localization meme. While literally it may appear as "to make local" and people try to interpret that as "I can do whatever the fuck I want as long as it's in the target language", that's not what it is. Localization, in regards to video games is the process of fixing such things as text wrapping for English characters, or having artists redo sign art assets in the target language. It has meant things along this more technical line for a long time in vidya, and only relatively recently has been paraded around as an excuse by translators for their shitty translations. The things some translators may parade around as "localization" like making idioms understandable in the target langauge are processes already covered under the term translation. You don't localize the Iliad or Antigone, you translate them. The misuse of the term localization has spread like wildfire in the professional translation scene both inside and outside of vidya, giving them a new justification to do their job poorly.

I capped that myself and am even the one who corrected the typo, however I no longer find it to be satisfactorily accurate. Confronted with that image goons can easily point to the fact that the term localization has been used for ages. It is not new, made up, or redundant, and is a completely valid term. It is simply being misused.

f8dd62 No.14840659

>>14840627

>I capped that myself and am even the one who corrected the typo

Thanks for that. As you said, it's not entirely accurate. I was more focused on insulting the guy I was responding to at the time. Also it was late.

However, though you're right that localization may have a proper usage, I don't think it's worthwhile to argue for it since anyone using it nowadays never uses it that way. The correct usage has been all but lost to the ages, twisted and morphed until you get the 'flavorful and spiced-up' version we're all familiar with. By now, trying to argue the point with those types is futile. Better to just shut it all down and demand they simply use translation, instead, because not only are they certainly retarded if they use the newspeak version, but the consequences of allowing the practice to continue unabated is simply unacceptable.

804561 No.14840680

>Better to just shut it all down

OY VEY. I'd prefer them to have as few arguments as possible when their bullshit is pointed out. Pointing out that they're misusing the term to justify bullshit, rather than dismissing the term as made up to justify bullshit, is by far the better argument in my eyes.

f8dd62 No.14840716

>>14840680

>by far the better argument in my eyes.

Certainly, but you're making the mistake that these people are arguing in good faith.

They aren't. They're either goons, or retarded dipshits like the guy above. Either way, soft methods of arguing, like attempting to redefine a co-opted word, will never work. Goons will weasel out of it with whatever bullshit tactic they think up on the spot, or they'll ignore it to poke and prod at some other hole in your argument. Retards who genuinely believe in (((localization))) just won't understand. Instead of spinning your wheels and trying to play fair, it's simpler (and oftentimes more persuasive to the audience in these parts) to just shut it down and strike so decisive a blow they cannot possibly retaliate.

I don't think the world loses something integral if we just keep it all under the umbrella term of translation. Also I'd argue that even the correct version of localization is still pretty redundant. Even translating signs, text wrapping, etc etc, is all covered under translation, I would say. It's all part of the process of translating something from A to B.

804561 No.14840744

>>14840716

>Certainly, but you're making the mistake that these people are arguing in good faith.

Doesn't matter. One must convince onlookers, not the opponent.

>oftentimes more persuasive to the audience in these parts) just shut it down and strike so decisive a blow they cannot possibly retaliate.

But that's exactly what one is avoiding doing by saying the term is made up rather than corrupted. If I say it's made up, I'm factually incorrect and this gives them the option of retaliation by refuting my false claim. In order to convince any audience it's best to, at a minimum, have one's facts straight.

I somewhat agree that it would be nice to umbrella everything under "translation", but I like precision in my terms.

f8dd62 No.14840782

>>14840744

>Doesn't matter. One must convince onlookers, not the opponent.

Agreed. This seems to be a matter of perspective on argumentation, then. I don't think it's very convincing at all to do posts like this >>14840592, for example. You're being very precise. You're being very correct. You're also being incredibly fucking boring, longwinded, and your overall message is vague due to the sheer number of refutations you make in your bid to counter every possible thing he says. You're simply giving yourself way too many holes that any opponent can pick apart, dragging the discussion back and forth and on and on and on. The typical audience doesn't give a shit about reading that sort of thing, and certainly isn't going to be moved one way or the other after (if) they read it all. People aren't moved or spurred by that, usually.

Short, succinct, focused, and with no chance for rebuttal. That's the sort of savaging that moves men. You can sacrifice a minimum of factual correctness in this context, because again, the term itself is compromised, redundant at best, and attempting to correct definitions is mostly a futile gesture in our current year where the prevailing definition is (((Localization.)))

>I somewhat agree that it would be nice to umbrella everything under "translation", but I like precision in my terms.

Something can be too precise. Too specialized. If proper usage of localization covers only the specific scenario of fixing text wrapping on a game/program so a translated language can fit and flow better, or other similar actions, then the term is too hyperspecialized and needs to go.

I admit, you've caught me indulging in a guilty pleasure. Not all of my responses are very long though. If you want terse from the "localization" meaning argument, here it is.

It covers other technical aspects that are not directly changing one langauge to another.

Localization is not translation, indeed. It's better. Translating 1:1 doesn't work. It comes off too stilted, there are untranslatable puns, jokes, etc etc. We need it to spice up the BORING text yada yada. We've all heard the retarded arguments.

By giving allowance to the term, you're allowing them to drag the argument to a matter of tastes, every time. Translation versus (((localization,))) with no clear winner because tastes are subjective.

>I am not a fan of George Orwell's Newspeak.

Words evolve and shift meaning, and like with evolution, it's often a one-way street. I don't think the term is recoverable. Not with the sorts of people who use it unironically as a synonym to translation.

It's not lying, and they can not definitively prove me wrong without destroying their own arguments. Though I can tell you don't like it, the fact of the matter is the word has been co-opted. Not a single fucking person knows, or furthermore, cares to acknowledge, that it has a proper usage. There is only one current context of (((Localization,))) and attempting to tailor your words around a now obsolete definition is a vain and fruitless attempt at covering all your bases. It also grants them leeway to weasel their way out by switching definitions on the fly.

I think you're under the assumption that arguments are won with facts and logic, or that the hypothetical people you'd be arguing with are arguing in good faith. Neither of those two things will ever be true.

They simply point out that the term as been used for ages, and you're lying if you claim it is new and made up. That makes you factually wrong rather than simply "possibly wrong on a matter of taste" which depends on the audience alone, not facts, giving more power to weasel words.

As specialized tech jargon with a wildly different definition than the current, in-vogue one. Considering the word only came into popularity to describe newspeak localization and that's what everyone knows it as, using that argument (disregarding that nobody would ever do so) only further proves that my claim is correct. It weakens their own position that localization is synonymous with translation.

Play to the audience. Localization in it's proper usage is an obscure technical term used by a select few before it was co-opted into what it is. Nobody gives a shit nor knows about it. Anyone asserting this usage can be summarily dismissed. It's all (((localization))) these days. I know it. You know it. The audience watching along at home knows it.

>You can't point that out without using my arguement which you're arguing against using.

How does that follow? I don't mention it at all as I don't think it's a particularly strong argument. Admitting the term once had a more correct usage contributes nothing to the strength of the argument and, at worst, drags it all down to the level of pointless semantics about word integrity. Whoever brings it up first essentially dilutes their own position and grants opportunity to the opponent.

What an odd hill to die on, though. >They don't care about gaijin as long as they make money.

A sweeping statement that is rather insulting to the artists and writers involved with the original works.

>She wouldn't say what she literally said because only a weirdo would

If you want to be more autistic about it, it's like this:

In English, that line 'You like… flowers…' 'You like flowers!' sounds awkward – in an unnatural English way. Just try to say that line in English and see how strange it sounds. How often do you hear people say 'You like (thing)?' 'You like (thing)!'? Never? Rarely if at all unless they're fucking Jacob Two-Two? Because it sounds really, really awkward. It's not normal English at all – and something a weirdo might say. In this case a [weirdo] that is speaking machine translated Japanese English like she walked straight out of Google Translate.''

So when you bring up that she IS infact a weirdo, her saying something naturally weird in English makes sense. In this case she says 'squee…!' and that's weird – in English. This is where context has been delivered to your autist brain now. The simple sum of it is that one is 1:1 but sounds stiff, like something some lazy shit could have just dropped into Google Translate and pasted into the line, ironic considering you bitching about people being low effort with translations, while the other sounds more like something an actual human being (who is also a weirdo) would say.

>In addition, it wasn't even there. It was literally an entirely new extra statement tacked onto what she said by a bad translator, not merely a liberal interpretation of something she said.

The context was already there. That's what was actually important. And, well, I already gave you a 'better translation' of what she said. She literally says 同志/doushi – https://jisho.org/word/%E5%90%8C%E5%BF%97 – twice. 'Comrade,' 'like-minded fellow,' etc. As in she is saying 'You like the same thing I do?' 'You like the same thing I do!' if you were to be as literal as you could possibly be without it sounding even more stupid like 'You are comrade in tastes, fellow cyka blyat?' 'You are comrade in tastes, fellow cyka blyat!' Unless said character was literally a Russian, ofcourse. Keep playing that armchair translator, though.

You're not paying attention to the conversation nigger. The part where shit is entirely made up that I have been pointing out, rather than a liberal interpretation, is the part where "arigato" is translated to "damn right! Thanks."

>if you were to be as literal as you could possibly be

The first part of the line wasn't your literal machine translation strawman, and I had no problems with it. The second part was different for no good reason. You're argument that it's unnatural is weak as fuck as there's nothing wrong with it to anyone but you and translator. Hell, the translator might have no problem with it at all and simply wanted to insert their own "spice" regardless. This is to say nothing of the fact that it's extremely jarring when you can hear her say the same exact thing twice while the text says two different things. If it's such a problem for her to say things twice in front of an English audience, then they should cut the Jap audio. Obviously the translation alone is superior for English consumers, and this jarring effect created by the audio is a detriment to the work, just like repeating the same thing in English. :^)
