In the anime, Kirby and Meta Knight are both "star warriors", though whether this makes them the same species is unclear (Knuckle Joe's dad was also a star warrior). Kirby is also explicitly a baby in the anime, having crashed on planet Popstar and released from his incubator-ship 200 years early due to Dedede fucking around. This is why MK can talk but Kirby can't. Waddle Dees are a different species, and are polar opposites to Kirby. Kirby is an independent, omnipotent glutton while Waddle Dees are subservient by nature, mostly cannon fodder, and mouthless.
In the games where multiple Kirbys appear (amazing mirror and mass attack) it is because of Kirby being split apart - they are not truly distinct individuals.

I think that while there are multiple "Kirbys," Kirby is not a conventional lifeform with a conventional origin. I'm starting to think that Kirby and the other puffballs like him are offshoots from Dark Matter, or at least something similar to Dark Matter. I wouldn't call them a "race" that does normal things like group together and reproduce and so on. I think they're like pieces of something, something very big and powerful, and Kirby is the strongest piece of it there is.
My only precedence is what jackpot >>14723777 posted along with Gooey as an example of "good" Dark Matter. Something is very weird in the Kirby universe and I'm sure Kirby and all the Knights are connected to it.

This could mean two things.
1. Kirby and Dark Matter (as well as Zero) are both reincarnations of the same material, a sort of space energy/matter that gets reincarnated into good and evil forms.This could explain/retcon things such as Dark Matter/Zero/Void Termina just wanting friends but going around it in the wrong way by using force and mind control, Gooey being good despite being part of Dark Matter, and even having similar powers to Kirby, and why Meta-Knight seems to be ashamed of his race, being the same species as Dark Matter.
2. Void Termina is just a singular entity that is easier to reincarnate than most. The reason it was mostly evil is because Hyness was using negative energy (and possibly pieces of Dark Matter. We know pieces of him still exist due to things like Gooey being alive, Dark Nebula being around in Squeak Squad, and Star Dream OS being able to clone Dark Matter Warrior. This would also explain Void Termina's Dark Matter-like form.) and the reason it had similarities to Kirby was because Kirby's battle in the summoning room affected the summon itself.

Games under Kumazaki's direction have been more lore focused because that's what he's into. The new games have had a "new plot but related to old plot" style. For example, Magalor in Return to Dreamland was inspired by Marx telling him how gullible Kirby is, Sectonia in Triple Deluxe was corrupted by staring into the Dimension Mirror, Haltmann from Planet Robopon uses a NOVA Unit to fulfill his desires, and Hyness from Star Allies reincarnates a being with a form similar to Dark Matter. this is really the only logical explanation for Dedede's portrayal throughout the games, only Dreamland (and the anime) portray Dedede as corrupt, in every other game he's more of a friendly rival. In more boss fights than not he ends up getting possessed by something and fighting kirby against his will, and in some newer games he's even a playable character.

Kirby is an old remnant of a double bubble piece of gum that has been chewed to death and left to rot in a dirty hobo's cardboard box. After being exposed to the filth and stench of the bum for years, it developed sentience and fled as far away as it could. The place the gum ended up in then got hit by a falling meteor. The meteor cleaned off the filth and the extraterrestrial bacteria living off it gave the piece of gum the ability to summon stars so it could explore the galaxy.
