Have any of you played King's field? I just started playing it, I really like the exploration. The first hour of the game is a complete wall. It took me quite a while to get used to the controls and combat. It is always exciting whenever you find a secret wall. I played eternal ring way back when the PS2 was new, which is more action and combat, less exploration and puzzle solving. Anyway, have you played king's field? Did you like it?
17b4af No.14715823
What, the first one, or the second one released as the first in english? People enjoyed the first two since they were really fucking early PS1 games, the first KF was a launch title in Japan. I don't think anyone cared for King's Field 3 since it was kind of shit and still looked like shit when better looking games were coming out for the PS1.
9c9381 No.14715833
If that's the screenshot of what you're currently playing, you've started with the wrong one, that's King's Field II. I supposed you really started with the right one, since it's the best, but there's a game prior to it that was JP-exclusive.
Totally decent console dungeon crawlers that managed to push forward some new concepts in every game despite the fact that they shat three of them out in a year and a half. Personally preferred II to any of the others, although maybe IV would come after that. I've only played them once apiece and don't really intend to go back at any point, although I think I've played Shadow Tower Abyss three times at this point.

I will get around to playing KFIII eventually. KFI seems more labyrinthine and obtuse than the second game, which is saying something, given that the second game is pretty fucking obtuse. Sucks that you have to abuse saves to get the ML sword after the final boss. I mostly enjoyed the games, but they could've used a bit more polish in places.

As far as I can recall, there aren't any riddles or anything like that which would require you to infer some message from the dialogue/writing.

Where the fuck do you live that that's the case? I mean, I don't exactly consider $20 super cheap or anything, but I used to see FFVII for $45 or so. Anyhow, last I recall seeing King's Field I (2) and II (3) locally they were about $25, maybe $30 each. Still not exactly cheap and I know price might be relative to where one lives, but there are far worse priced PS1 games out there, even amongst games that sold well enough to achieve a Greatest Hits print (for example, started seeing the likes of Symphony of the Night and Xenogears marked for $60 around where I live lately).

Also, while not exactly King's Field, Shadow Tower and ST: Abyss. Former came west, while SCEA forced Agetec to shitcan the latter when they were almost done translating it (because of graphical standards they wanted to push in NA at the time and claiming a lack of audience for those sort of games anymore; think the latter bit them in the ass when they refused to handle Demon's Souls themselves and Atlus instead got to make profit on it). Though, Abyss has been fan translated since then.

I've only played The Ancient City; First-person melee/bow/xbow/magic with tank controls, y'know like in RE4, be prepared to utilize the strafe controls if you wanna make it. Premise is simple: return a cursed idol to it's original altar and then fight a monstrosity end boss. There are of course other level bosses. Be prepared for gothic architecture, low ambient music, and emos everywhere. You can only save at set points which I believe resemble skeletel angels. Weapons can't actually break they only go down to 50% condition. You can find a guy who will fix your shit for free really fucking late in the game, but he also takes real-world time to do so, so have a book handy while you're waiting 5-10 minutes for him to hammer your sword back into shape. You use crystals to learn new spells and they also replenish your magicka so hold off until you're low on it. You can't hack and slash everywhere because you have a strength meter, the higher it is the more damage you do when you melee or use bow, it also depletes while running. I think your magic meter needs to be completely full, unlike strength, before you can use a spell again. There's also hidden walls that open up and you're not aware of but you can get a ring to make you see em, so you're gonna do some backtracking but I think it's optional anyway.
By the way, I recall a sort of tower in the middle of the city where there's elemental symbols and candles lit upon the wall, do they light more candles when you do stuff and something happens when you light them all up?

Oh yeah, about that, you hit the boss 3 times with any weapon and you win. You hit it with an average weapon, and it just goes back to sleep in the eplilogue, and takes you along with it. If you actually want the canon ending, you have to find a dead knight's sword called the Lawful Blade and then take it to some hippie elvish altar and dip the blade in magic juice so it becomes the Moonlight Sword and THEN hit the boss 3 times with it, then in the epilogue it dies for real and the city comes back to life.

Eternal Ring's magic system is held back by ring cooldowns. Not just casting, but switching to a ring means you have to wait and predictably this time increases the higher the level of the ring. This also has the effect of causing support-type rings to lose value as the cost of waiting to cast anything is better spent on offense and your defensive options should be to just circle strafe.
I like the idea of the ring fusions. But Eternal Ring doesn't encourage experimentation of rings as much as it should.

It doesn't function the same way. You shouldn't punish the player for changing equipment, you should limit their ability to spam an attack which is handled by the second half of the cooldown sequence (after a cast) as well as MP costs.
I can understand if they are feeling things out how to handle that kind of system it's just not a good feel and the ring cooldowns were already long enough when you stepped into the 3rd level magic spells.

Obviously if one likes Japanese games; plenty of stuff they got low cost rereleases of that were never in English in the first place. I will say though that with the PS2-on-PSN offerings, there was a strange facet where, at least comparing RPGs rereleased during 7th gen (and early 8th), most of the games on the NA one the JP one didn't bother with rereleasing, while most of the ones on the JP one (ignoring ones we didn't see in the first place, like Phantasy Star Generations) didn't come to the NA one. On the PS1-on-PSN end, there's less cases of us getting a rerelease that they didn't get, though their selection is of course much better and added to by JP exclusive releases. Does just make me curious as to what's up with the difference between the PS2 NA and JP PSN rereleases. PAL of course got fucked hard on both ends.
Images related, but perhaps out of date to some degree (namely for PS2 on PS4) at this point.
