Jak I was a great evolution of Crash Bandicoot. Not quite as good, but it evolved the series gameplay in logical ways. I'm sure sequels could have improved it much further, such as by adding things back in that Crash 3 had, like Time Trials.
Jak II and 3 are still great, but in retrospect are obviously the beginning of the end for Naughty Dog. That said, Jak X is fucking amazing and a criminally underrated racing game. Crash Team Racing now seems to get the respect it deserves as one of the best kart racers ever, but nobody gives Jak X credit as a great spiritual sequel. The Twisted Metal type elements it added worked great, and it has the best story I've ever seen in a racing game. The gameplay of course is excellent and the customization works in a lot of ways you wouldn't expect, like how thinking about your car's center of gravity as you build it can actually be very important. Really great game.
