This game was a mistake,theres absolutely no reason to make a new god of war with kratos as the lead(should have picked a brand new nordic character instead or something similar)
his arch was done,he got his revenge by God of War 3 killing all the main gods and even zeus himself in the end.And even with his revenge he accomplished nothing but more suffering and death for all around him by causing that realm to fall apart.
This makes every single game that came before, lose all of its importance and meaning,the death of his daugther,wife and brother deimos all mean nothing now that he got himself a new family and the same recycled old template of him battling with a bunch of gods until he gets to the endboss Odin and destroys everything around him.

I haven't played the game, but I have seen enough footage and some lets-plays to form a decent opinion on the game. It's pretty clear that they were going for a souls-like game with its shoulder camera and R1, R2 combat. This conflicts with how the game is designed as your fighting more that three opponents at a given time. That had to compromised and give you fucking stealth indicators to tell you how close an enemy is.
The only real thing I can critique without being called out is the Deep Narrative the game was going for. I think the idea of parring a kid with Kratos is a dumb and only included because the lead designer wanted to indulge in his father-and-son bond
I'll give the game one thing, I liked how in the end when Kratos kills Baldur he quotes Zeus

The idea to give Kratos a kid goes back to the concepts of the first God of War. The idea was to give some sort of understandable or relatable vulnerability and drive to the character.
Yes, this means some early concepts of Kratos had him having a baby on his back in a basket.
Now, as I'm playing this I will put it out there that they very much wanted the "Souls" audience. So much in combat and play has changed here.
It is very clear that the developers wanted to make their own souls type game and used the God of War franchise to do it.

Hell, another thing that show how radically different the time periods when the first GoW was released and this one, are alternative joke costumes. Even the third one had costumes, that while not as funny, at least gave different bonuses or weaknesses kinda like SpiderMan for the PS1. The most interesting one, being Fear where you do four times the amount of damage, but enemies also do four times the amount of damage, that should change the gameplay strategies a bit.
The reason why we don't have costumes in the new game, is because this a "serious" and "mature" experience, and you can't have Kratos in a scuba costume while giving an emotional speech to his wife's son. The solution would be to do what GoW 3 did and other games did, have the pre-rendered cutscenes with the default costumes, and the gameplay with the joke one, but oh-oh the game doesn't have pre-rendered cutscenes, it's all "in real time" and "in engine" or whatever buzzwords they used.

The story's pacing is fucking shit. It reminded me of the first Hellboy movie. You meet a character, have some quircky dialog then 5 minutes later you meet him again. Even the RE4 merchant gave you more breathing room in between his "welcome stranger" greetings. At one point Kratos and kid reach some black smoke blocking the path "oh how i wish that strong independant witch lady we meet 5 minutes earlyer was here" the brat says "i bet she knows how to undo this" lo and behold she literally pops out outta nowhere and sends you backtracking into a fetchquest to get a magical mcguffin to clear the smoke. This happens every single time and it ain't like these magical turds give you any new kind of gameplay or a new move, no, they're just elaborate keys to unlock elaborate doors

(that was always a big draw, seeing what kind of performance they could yank out of the already aged PS2 and PSP). instead of creating something entirely new (like the first God of war was considered a big risk by Sony Japan) they did the safest thing they possibly could in the most pedantic way possible. and in a year or two this game will be completely forgotten. while the original 2 games still have something that players remember fondly. this thing however is just a oddly long cinematic interspersed with repetitive somewhat broken gameplay. there's a market for that sure but I don't see it standing the test of time. (but I do see Sony making more games in this style, unfortunately).

last time I checked, streaming a game from the Internet added at lest 100ms of input lag. so you have to add that number to the input lag of your television (even if you play in game mode). there's also the added wrinkle that some game engines have high latency built-in ( nuBattlefield has 80ms latency regardless of what hardware you play it on).
I don't know TV or monitor you have but most televisions have 40ms to 120ms of input lag. ( monitors usually have with less) with some games and hardware combinations you can have nightmare play scenarios of 300+ milliseconds of input lag (every 12 ms is about 1 frame). so you should probably figure out what you're display's input lag is. that way you can make a better educated decision.

Am I the only one disappointed that they dragged Kratos back for this? Kratos's story is finished. I don't mind a side game where he kills Athena's Astral form and some remnant gods that didn't appear in 3. However they are better off making God of War 4 be about a new character. At the end of the day all this NuGoW did was get me to finally start emulating GoW2 since I already played 1 and the two for PSP and found them rather enjoyable, maybe at some point all play 3 and maybe ascension and then say "Man that was a rather decent series of video games to play while waiting for Devil May Cry 5 to be announced."

He's kinda like a Gary Stu, always the voice of reason and every single bad thing he does is justyfied by the plot to excuse the character for all his violence
They could have made him a flawed character, a former murderer trying to learn how act like a civiliced person, but any growing he did he did in between games.
You know that scene in the reveal trailer when he barks at the kid for missin a shot then takes a deep breath and reins in his shit temper? that's the only time something like that ever happens. They could have made him go full viceral gore against those starving human enemies only for him to realise mid slaughter that his son is watching and he is terrified of his father's violenece, then Kratos would look at his bloody hands and remeber why his skin is grey. (something this game really overlooks, the kid ask the dwarf why his skin is blue but never wonders why his dad is grey?) Give his character some sort of personal struggle, at least that could excuse the kid going full edgelord near the end and murdering a god in cold blood, then when Kratos scolds him the kid could reply "i learned it from you", later on they face the concequences of their merciles brutality and realize what they have done (remeber in previous games how killing a god made the sun go dark, the plants die, the sea rise, everyone getting sic and shit? none of that happens here, and they kill 3 gods) that would have been some sort of a story arc.
How about not killing Baldur at the end? Kratos sparing the final boss, now that's something that's never done before, but noooooo, after all the lecturing about "killing as an indulgence is bad m'kay" he just goes and murders the guy becos plot
This Kratos is not a killer learning to be a good man through the inocence of his son, it's just an old man ashamed of his past just like the dev is ashamed of the past games

Ehhh..I read into it a bit differently.
The relationship between Kratos and his kid and wife seems to echo a dear (departed) friend of mine when he would tell me about why he worked so much. Basically, he was so afraid of his own temper and being an out of control abusive psychopath because of it that he wanted to work ALL of that shit out away from home with as much work as possible so that the time he spent with his kids and wife were just completely empty of that built up venom.
Through the game, I see some of the same things with Kratos. We have to recognize that Kratos may desperately trying not to fall into that rage and repeat his past.
However there is obvious conflict in what is going on between what the mother taught the kid and what the father holds true. The mother seems to have taught the kid the pantheon of gods and their stories with reverence.
Meanwhile Kratos is basically a fedora tipping atheist when it comes to gods and such. With good reason, of course, but he never seems to want to explain any of this to his kid.
There is definitely a conflict here with Kratos. He wants to protect his son, he wants to teach his son how to survive in the world, but he doesn't want to make his son into what he is. Which is kind of odd, honestly, for a Spartan.

I'v seen parts of the game and I Get that's what their are going for, but at the same time it doesn't work in the context of the world.
(Spoilers for anyone who gives a shit.)
I guess it was near the late middle of the game, Kratos Finally tells the kid that he's a god and that the kid is a god too. As soon as the kid finds out about this he's shocked, but also is totally okay with it, It's actually humorous at first to see the kids reaction to it. The kid starts getting a little high and mighty about how he's and his dad are gods, , but then the kid starts becoming a Dick and that is funny at first too but then really fast. like unreasonably fast. it's as if every single lesson he learned though out his life he fogots, as soon as he found out he was a god. he becomes a little shit disturber getting giving lip to Kratos and disrespecting his mom saying "She wasn't a god" This all leads up to the ("lowest point") where the Kid is trying to kill the balder guy, and Kratos is saying that the kid isn't ready, the kid shoots Kratos with an arrow. and basically Kratos and the kid get fucked over and end up in hell.
What they're going for is that the Kid is turning into the old Kratos, but the Kids personality changes completely in less then an hour of game time. and this doesn't work because the kid has no business ending up like Kratos, Kratos is a Spartan he was a killing machine beacuse the cuture he grew up in glorified Combat and War of course Kratos would have Rage issues.
The kid grew up in a fucking forest alone with his mom and and Kratos trying really hard not to show Rage. This kid would never end up like Kratos it makes no senses
