For him GoW was 4-5 years of work for me GoW is a product and one that I dislike not because is completely shit (it has its moments) but because is a run of the mill narrative driven game with mediocre gameplay which is heavily downgraded for the series. Sure, it looks pretty but it doesn't play well because it's all about the graphics.
Not only that but it's in the same bucket with The Last of Us, Bioshock Infinite & Hellblade of "oscar-bait" games which sadly get journos all wet because "muh feels" and "games can now be taken seriously" and that pisses me off.
I've nothing against narrative driven games but I do take issue with devs that sacrifice gameplay just to tell a mediocre story that doesn't hold a candle to even mediocre movies.

To be fair MGR is fairly short and has some bad padding at times. The Sam and Wolf DLC also re use a ton of shit instead of making new areas. there kind of lazily made, but that just be from a lack of budget. So I think an 8/10 is a rather good score for MGR.

I haven't played gow2 in years but if i remember correctly you'd have to fight through mobs, and do some platforming to actually get to the QTE activators, and to even activate those you had to fight him normally, granted it was "wait for him to slam his hand and hit it" it's still a step above a very controlled boss fight like i see in the new GOW, also you got to go inside the colossus and fuck shit up which was kinda cool

I wouldn't go that far, Ninja Gaiden is still my favorite of the genre but I won't pretend like I didn't have fun with GOW1-3 and some aspects of ascension even. I don't consider flashy inherently bad it just depends on delivery, GOWS delivery was pretty shit sometimes but it was still a complete bloodbath and had lots of things to fight, I haven't looked into the new GOWs enemy variety but from what i've seen my roommate play it doesn't look great. Still it was doing it's own thing and I feel it had room to actually grow that got pushed away for the wrong reasons.

Let me bring up four games I have played with a 2 weapon limit and how each of them play out:
>nuMedal of Honor (2010)
<Okay, you actually have a "three weapon" limit in this game, but go figure. There no reason is pick up another weapon at any point in this game unless it is for "story reasons" (Which is typically towards the end of a level). The "freedom of choice" between switching your issued weapon for an enemy weapon is a trap because enemies rarely drop ammo once killed and you can call upon one of your squad mates for more ammo when your issued weapon runs out. On top of that, your pistol has infinite ammo.
>Bioshock Infinite
<This game is also a trap because you can "upgrade" your weapons throughout the campaign leading the player to think that "If I trade out this weapon for another one, that means all my stat bonuses that I poured money into are going to be lost". But, in reality, those bonuses still apply to weapons throughout the campaign, which then requires asking why there is a two weapon limit in the first place since all sense of "devotion to your weapon" is lost.
>Halo 2
<This game provides you the weapons you "need" almost on demand. There's is very little reason to "think deeply" about your weapon choice, you can drop a depleted weapon for another gun that fulfills just about the same role without skipping a beat, and there is enough variety in options given that the player can play through the levels in several different ways. On top of that, knowing how to aim also helps too.

I still don't understand why people even give a shit about Kratos as a character, or wish to see him "developed". He was never intended to develop. He was a flimsy contextual excuse for the tone of the game and the mechanics. That's it. That's all he was intended to be. If anything, he's a villain responsible for the near total extermination of Classical Greece. Hundreds of thousands dead because he just didn't give a fuck, not to mention the innocents he butchered along the way because they happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time (and because they gave out healing orbs). There is no redemption from that. He's a fucking monster. That's how they designed him. At the absolute most charitable, he's an extreme example of the Greek Hero who is looked up to because of the great feats they accomplished that are beyond the scope of normal men. They are usually dicks, though, and often accomplish those feats by stepping on the necks of others - and their flaws (in Kratos's case, his blinding thirst for revenge) end up fucking them (and everyone around them) over in the end.
You can't humanize him at this point. Or do people just not think about this shit, and assume that because he's the hero - that he should be sympathetic? He actually is "literally worse than Hitler", because at least Hitler was doing what he thought was right and needed for a better society. At least a better Germany for his people. Kratos killed way more people, indiscriminately, because he simply didn't give the slightest fuck about the consequences of his actions beyond how those consequences affect him. He destroyed for the sake of destroying.
And now we're expected to care about his emotional journey? About his kid or his dead Norse bitch? I don't get it. They removed the classic gameplay, so there is no need for that contextual excuse any more. There's no need for HIM anymore.

Ironically the thing that differentiated GoW from the mechanically much better DMC/Ninja Gaiden games was the character and the setting. People liked GoW because Kratos was a vicious psychopath. In any other game he'd be the antagonist you are trying to stop. Few protagonists, especially today, are as filled with hatred and contempt as Kratos, and there's no real redemption arc for him either. He just kills everyone he wants to kill with brutal violence, and then gets bored until the next game. Plus there aren't a lot of games set in ancient Greece.
Now he's a nu-male faggot with a ball and chain NPC dragging him down the entire game. The violence is dialed down and the unbridled rage and anger is replaced with calm contemplative moments about exploring his feefees. Something we've seen before multiple times this generation. In a setting that is big in pop-culture at the moment, and isn't all that unique.
