It's got a neat atmosphere, great OST, and characters that have a lot of growth. Atoli is one of the most feelsy female characters I've ever seen.

Gameplay is solid but gets real good in Volume 3 when you unlock all the weapons. About the only thing that might not have aged well is Haseo's character in volume 1. Dude is edge personified but he grows quite a bit and by volume 2 he has all but matured.

The only thing that's even making me consider this "remaster" is that supposedly they added in an entirely new volume. Whether or not it was needed or even fits in with what was established in the original trilogy, I have no clue, but the fact that they basically created a "new" PS2 game and gave you all the other ones in the same package is not disagreeable to me. What's stopped me from getting it already is that it's still $50 (because even Jews will lower the price to make a sale years before a nip would consider it), and I'm not sure if I even have the time or motivation to really sit down and marathon four JRPGs back to back.

I mean, I still have to finish up the final game in the original .//hack series, so make that five JRPGs back to back.

I got it for 30 on ps4, and only reason I did is because they don't tend to make a lot of copies of .hack games. I imagine the digital market will keep it from getting too rare, but still, I'd rather not pass up my chance of getting a physical copy.

I saw it for $35 on their Golden Week sale, but if they want me to buy digital shit, they're going to have to do better than $15 off. Bring it down to $20~25 and I'll consider it. Maybe next year, if I haven't gotten a bug up my ass by that point and decided to just pirate it.

Have to remember that .hack R:1 and R:2 are less 4+3 games (I suppose 4+4 now), and more two games split into fourths and thirds. I liked both subseries, but damn if I don't hate that release format.

It's more of a send off, and a tease for an upcoming title. As children we looked up to Ovan, he seemed to control everything from the shadows and know something that we don't. But as adults, we pity him. Ovan was creating his own hell.

Haseo has grown past his edgy teenager phase and has become a man. To exemplify this, he reaches out to Ovan at the end, welcoming him to the world. The stark opposite of how the story began. It seems to realize the fans of the series are older now and treats you as such.

Oh, and something to keep in mind for new players, this game is a continuation of where the anime left off. The game explains what's happened though.

And this is some deep lore, but Haseo is actually a character from .hack//SIGN who lost his memories and made a new character. He was Sora.

d3aa9a No.14707309

I thought it was a fine remaster, but the 4th Volume they added was honestly pretty bad. The new form looked like some Bleach-tier shit, I didn't like losing all of my weapons and being restricted to just one and the balance was terrible. If you're going into vol 4 as a level 150, you're going to breeze through 99% of it.

If you just want to replay the .Hack//GU games at a higher quality, get it. But the 4th volume isn't worth it alone.

>Oh, and something to keep in mind for new players, this game is a continuation of where the anime left off.

Might want to state you mean .hack//SIGN, but really G.U. is a continuation of R:1's continuity at times (given the series working as a chronology with some players still sticking around, albeit with new characters), though I wouldn't say going through those is an outright requirement. Does add a LOT to the world and character building though, with Sign and Roots acting as prequels their respective game subseries, though those admittedly aren't for everyone (Sign being much more focused on dialogue and interaction than combat or action, and Roots getting rather edgy as Haseo tries to cope with loss). Also still don't get why they thought having outright Vol 1 and 2 spoilers within the latter episodes of Roots itself was a good idea, even if the the games, or at least volume 1, was out in Japan by that point.

I still haven't watched episode 27 of .hack//Roots, namely because I've had a lot of trouble finding it and apparently it was never even released in the west either.

P4

Its a pretty good final piece storywise that wraps everything up in a neat package.

Gameplay wise it robs the player of many previous freedoms and alters fighting methods to a more unorthodox fight style. Also the level cap is still kept to 150 so in the 4th game you cannot go past this.

New animation style is 10/10 although its not consistent to part 1-3 and gives me hope they would make .hack a new game one day using this animation style alone.

Its good' not great, just good.

>new volume is absolute fucking dogshit, with only 2-4 hours of story

>new volume removes ALL of Haseo's old weapons and forces you to only use the new "we want the SAO audience" Kirito sword

I suspect G.U. was chosen first for the rerelease treatment because it would require less work on their part (though they still went out o the way to tweak/add things for better or worse), whereas IMOQ might have been deemed to require an actual remake to hold up better. Or maybe R:2 is just the more popular part of the series in Japan, thus a better way for Bamco to gauge interest in their native consumerbase, I don't know. Either way though, Last Recode wasn't just a standard PS3-era "HD Compilation" for better or worse, and sadly it's generally been the really well selling, easy to find PS2 games that got cleared for that treatment, at least as far as ones that came west (not sure if there were any besides Yakuza HD that were Japan only), rather than games that didn't do well and could use another day in the light after having years to build more of an interest base. Also worth mentioning that I have seen PS2 the BEST print import copies at local stores, so I guess Japan like IMOQ enough to warrant that (they also saw the Fragment MMO version as well), leaving just the west to be shafted as far as officially available copies go (think I've even heard Quarantine was Walmart exclusive or something, complicating things further).

Anyhow, assuming you haven't played the full IMOQ and actually want to, consider either emulating them or loading off a modded PS2 with an IDE (I recommend OPL 0.9.3 as the loader; tried using it with HDL before and the games were fucky through it). Or maybe look into how well CFWed non-backwards compatible PS3s can handle playing them through Cobra. Because I haven't heard much on how well Last Recode did in Bamco's book, as to whether or not they might let CC2 do a compilation of IMOQ somewhere down the line.

You're supposed to wear your glasses when you play games and not squint at the screen.

>they boosted exp gains

It's unfortunate but I understand. New players usually despise grindy single player games, and returning players want to relive the story.

>vol 4 sucks and is short

Your first decent opinion. It was short. For returning players it was just a trip down memory lane and a teaser for an upcoming title. Newer players may have expected more content considering the last 3 were decent chunks.

>volume 4 is shit because they give you a weapon and lock out old weapons

Every single volume has a massive combat overhaul. And this overhaul only lasts for the final hour of the already short volume 4. If you want to use the old weapon system, upload volume 3 and do the forest of pain quest.

>You're supposed to wear your glasses when you play games and not squint at the screen.

A huge part of the game's graphical fidelity came from the post-processing trickery to hide the lackluster models and lack of lipflapping in unimportant cutscenes. Last Recode just uses a lazy blue filter that washes shit out.

>It's unfortunate but I understand. New players usually despise grindy single player games, and returning players want to relive the story.

You could already do that in the original, it was a very, very, very easy game. Now it's physically impossible to be challenged because your level is the only important stat and you are always overleveled, even if you're running from fights.

>you can kill 1 in every 3 monsters and one shot each boss

What is this sentence? I didn't even say that. Since you bring it up, though, yes, you can one-shot everything because at 8 levels beyond you'll start hitting the damage cap passively, and overleveling that hard is very easy in Last Recode

>It works on my machine.

Same, actually, but everyone I know who's tried the game has had crashes, horrible stuttering, or both.

>Again, you're supposed to wear your glasses and pause between your fits of autism. You're making shit up.

Did you even play the PS2 original? The very first thing you should notice right from the start is that Haseo's running animation is at double speed, his twin-blade attacks are sped up, and the skill trigger animation is too fast and clips Haseo's voice lines (in both languages, before you start on that shit)

They doubled the framerate in a game that ties the physics to that framerate, and didn't give a shit to clean everything up.

>Every single volume has a massive combat overhaul.

Going from 1 to 2 adds the multi-trigger and completely changes Haseo's twin-blade combo string, which I suppose you could call an overhaul. 2 to 3 only adds a new weapon type, nothing about the core gameplay changes. 4 then throws everything in the garbage so that Haseo can become Kirito-lite. If I want to use the old weapon system I can just forcibly revert Haseo to Xth form because I've hacked the shit out of the PS2 games and I still know how everything works. Doesn't make it less shit.

>But did you really think they'd risk changing a story without fans screeching autistically?

Considering Vol. 3 was poorly recieved for being a rushed mess? I didn't expect them to change it because Namco are lazy kikes, but I wanted them to.

>Tldr why did you even come into this thread

What part of .hack autist do you not understand.

Last Recode desperately needs a full difficulty rebalance mod

>Reverse every single balance change the remaster made except for the chim chim cap

>Remove character level from the damage calculation

>Remove character level breakpoints on attack stagger, because being 4 levels above someone shouldn't let you fucking ignore their attacks

>Increase the weight of the other stats in the damage calculation, so that gear and buffs actually do something

>Give Alkaid the revamped twin-blade combo string, she deserves it

This is the ost in PSF2 format, it's pretty damn small in size compared to the soundtrack collection, plays in game emu player in foobar and deadbeef. The music was the best part of .hack.

I used to speedrun GU vol 1, and did a run at a marathon which a tranny freaked the fuck out due to the twitch chat blowing up during my run. we were just having fun and the tranny went insane.

That is you playing the game? Man, you must have the nerves of steel or something. I would've completly lost it if someone started acting like that in voice chat.

Hack GU is only grindy if you want it to be. You can ignore those sidequests.

Game was made for autistic Japanese teens and young adults with lots of free time.

You know IDGAF either way usually because I'm just playing with the JPN audio. But in this case the English dub really was in the wrong, they voiced stuff going against the script.

Xseed did it too but at least they asked permission first.

That is one of my favorite videos. Goes to show how nuts the trannys who infest these events are. Didn't he get angry and start crying at one point because you were playing a game he didn't like?

.hack, both the R:1 and R:2 games, have a fair bit of optional post volume stuff, namely in the way of grinding out certain things for Book of Ryu credit and the rewards from it (namely OST and wallpapers) which have to be met during the volume they're unlocked or you can't get them. Back in the day, this would give people more reason to keep playing during the downtime of multiple months before the next volume was released and they could continue the plot when it did. However, with all the games long since out by this point, I wager most people that play them might do the post volume dungeon and then just move on to the next, as there's no forced wait due to an atrocious episodic release format.

They were contracted for a set time period and finished much faster than expected, so they used the extra time to voice every single line of dialogue in the game. Japanese players found out about this and complained, so rather than step up their game Namco ordered the NA branch to not voice anything unvoiced in the JP version. They literally paid the NA VAs to sit around and do nothing just to spite the western market. Now with Last Recode they went back and removed all of the extra VA from the first volume because they're unbelievably petty.

Which none of the casual babby retard changes alleviates. They nerfed the enemies, they jacked up your damage, they jacked up EXP gains, but Ryu Books have the exact same requirements. It makes it even more irritating to max them because you're sitting at max level the whole time just one-shotting everything. The problem of Ryu Book unlocks being premanently missable (which is only a thing in GU, by the way) was left unfixed because that would require effort.

I enjoyed it. It's pretty much the same game for the first half in each Volume though. If you're not invested in the .hack// franchise you may not enjoy it so much.

The localisation is pretty iffy in a lot of spots too, particularly if you know Japanese. I suggest playing with the Japanese voice overs if you don't want to kill yourself.

>Whether or not it was needed or even fits in with what was established in the original trilogy, I have no clue

Well the original was supposed to be tetrology like IMOQ was, but they ran out of money. Possiblity is they may have still had the original script and essentially finished what was originally cut short.

>Also the level cap is still kept to 150 so in the 4th game you cannot go past this.

That's fucking stupid.
