Any of you guys familiar with the development of the Ninja Gaiden games?
It seemed like Tecmo put Hayashi in charge to purposefully ruin the work of Itagaki. The Sigma games and the original version of Ninja Gaiden 3 are absolutely inferior to Itagaki's games. Many of the design decisions they made do not even make any sense unless there was purposeful self sabotage of their own franchise going on. They even made a really cringe spin off called Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z. And you guessed it, Hayashi was also involved with this terrible game.
Itagaki was owed royalties for his work that Tecmo did not want to pay him. So if any of you guys are interested in the series just make sure you stick to the Xbox versions, Ninja Gaiden Black and Ninja Gaiden 2. Avoid Hayashi's shit at all costs.

Hmm i always wondered why those games became easier and easier after NG2. I guess i have my reason now.
7914e4 No.14704111
Hayashi always wanted the NG games to be more cinematic and story driven but the Sigma games seemed to streamline or slightly improve (sometimes disprove) the original versions. When he was given full control with NG3, he created the type of NG game he wanted. A story driven action game with a mediocre, predictable story and bad gameplay full of quick time events. The game might as well been God of War. Even worse, NG3 is the nuGoW of the NG series.
After the bad sales, they realized that people loved the series for what it used to be. So they strapped NG2 onto the content of NG3. It "almost" worked too since the gameplay was spot on. However many of the bosses, stages, and enemies in NG3 just aren't fun or interesting. They had to add a ton of older enemies and bosses to make up for the lack of new content and there aren't even any new weapons for you to use. If Itagaki was still with them, NG3 would have most likely been very good.

I'm more perplexed than aggravated with how this game only got worse as it went. The first game had such a good formula, gameplay, everything really. About the only thing they needed to refine in the sequel was the platforming and checkpoints… but instead the series missed all the good things about the first game and instead took it into a direction where you were just fighting hoards of annoying enemies fluffed with artificial difficulty.
In some ways I'm sad we'll never get another game as good as black/sigma, but in others I'm just thankful they got almost all of it right with the first game.

Ninja Gaiden 3 was Team Ninja trying to appeal to a western market by basically making the Ninja equivalent of military shooters right down to washed out colors, edgy story, gritty third world-country locales, lowered difficulty, a bigger focus on a cinematic experience and fucking competitive multiplayer.
Sigma were supposedly shit because of the PS3's limitations compared to the Xbox, but there's no fucking excuse for the original 3.

Truth. NG3 came at a time where half of Team Ninja splot and the merger of Koei and Tecmo was finalised so Hayashi made the decision to go back to the NES roots of Ninja Gaiden that manifested via the "westernization" of the series as even he himself put it. Thing is, when they saw what happened, they issued public apologies and made NG3RE and decided to honour the series' roots by adding the WiiU as a platform.
Sigma was shit because they had to recreate NG1 from scratch using the new engine they had conceived for NG2 Sigma but unlike NG2, the team half-knew what was going on with NG1 and had to reverse engineer a lot of shit since Microsoft were dicks and didn't give them even their code for the original XBOX game as it belonged to them since Itagaki had signed a contract that allowed Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2 to use a cutting edge proprietary engine that Microsoft had created for the XBOX family of games and hence also the exclusivity of NG1 and NG2 forever and ever. It's not so much limitations, it's they had to go blind and redo the whole thing on a new engine and on a new system.

Gaiden is pronounced like gaijin, same syllable.
Closest I've found recently is Oniken, which is a surprisingly decent indie game. They really went the extra effort to make it look, play, and sound like an NES game.
I actually didn't mind the parts in Ninja Gaiden where the girls were playable. They weren't as polished as the main sections with Ryu, but that's the be expected since they were literally after-thoughts.
What if Ninja Gaiden was reborn as a DOA all-starts style action game. Plays the same, but at the beginning of a level you pick a team of three ninja ladies, each one using a particular weapon and style, and you can swap between them on the fly like a tag battle system. Maybe give them different movement systems too to make exploration and platforming more varied.

Hayashi excited woring with one of his heroes agrees and even lents the Tecmo seal and NG character. It's all a dumb scheme to make a game for revenue for Mighty Number 0 and Inafune hires Spark Unlimited to make the game, Tecmo only appears for PR, producing(because of course Inafune must suck money) and lending the characters and universe.
Now imagine a lifeless game, an attempt at a Ninja Gaiden game by westerners who only made TPS games, watched some God of War and then saw some edgy teen zombie movies and then puked and farted all over their ideas until they were disgusting enough to put into a game disc. That's Yaiba.

Damn, I just posted that NG2 comparison image a single time just a few days ago. Surprised somebody saved it.
Anyway, it's all going to boil down to personal preference. I played hundreds of hours in each version, but I have to say NG1 Sigma gave more than it took away. For me, it all started because I loved the breakneck pace that was in NG3:Razor's Edge. Only NG2 Vanilla came close to that sense of speed & panic.
>>14704111
Never saw it that way, but it does seem correct. They did try to fix a bunch of things from NG3 vanilla to NG3 Razor's Edge, but still something felt missing.
>If Itagaki was still with them, NG3 would have most likely been very good.
Probably. It would've been very interesting to have seen what could've been. I do think it's a littler interesting that after NG3 vanilla bombed, it was Nintendo who gave Hayashi's Team Ninja a second chance to be able to make NG3:RE. Strangely enough, Nintendo was also there to give Itagaki another chance after Devil's Third had development hell for eight years (Itagaki was left by Microsoft to focus on Kinect titles, THQ went bankrupt, etc).
I LOVED Devil's Third too. Surprised at all the little nuances put into that game. Shocked to find out the enemy buildings had hidden weak points you could exploit when you wanted to destroy them.

Itagaki was pretty slick when he made hidden weak points for bosses in NG2. Thing is, for most bosses their weak point is their BACK! The amount of extra damage done is also dependent on how much you've leveled up the weapon you're attacking with. You'll almost never know you hit it a weak spot in the middle of heated combat, but it's there.
I was making some weapon's chart but I gave up because of weird inconsistencies in damage. Now that I know about the weak spots, it all makes sense why some hits in the combo would do higher damage, but wouldn't when I repeated the combo.

It get's absolutely EVERYTHING about the formula wrong.
I don't even know where to begin… I guess we'll start with bosses. In Ninja Gaiden the bosses had a good balance between damage output and damage reception. Like all the enemies in the game they could beat you relatively fast, but if you were skilled, you could beat them almost as fast. In Razors Edge the bosses have so much padded health that it's more a test of your endurance than skill. You'll just wait for them to finish their pattern, wail away at them, hope they don't get you with a cheap move that will half your health, then rinse, wash and repeat 20 times. Then, by the time you are worn out with the bosses, the game will begin throwing two or three of those tedious bosses at you at once.
Enemies are thrown at you in large numbers. Where as in Gaiden you could choose to fight large groups of enemies for rewards, in this it's just the standard and there's nothing waiting for you after clearing a hoard of enemies that will randomly break out of your combos just because they can, and kill you in 3-4 hits sometimes with some pretty cheap shots. The combo's would be pretty damn cool, but like I said, there's no rhyme or reason to an enemy just deciding to break your combo while they're in the middle of it.
The levels are linear as fuck and have no exploration, nor secrets.
the story is so fucking bad that you can't even ignore it and just enjoy the gameplay… it just manages to be that fucking bad.
The devs basically mistook difficulty with tedium. You're honestly just better off playing Black or Sigma again if you get the itch. I'd say avoid RE at all cost.
