Finishing up Wind's Quests in PoR.
>Need three more spells for Charlotte.
>First two are alright; one from a room where you can just walk in and out to respawn Malachi, and the other being a matter of frying every medusa head on the screen with chain lightning (and seeing it bounce all over the place, enemy to enemy, is cathartic).
>Last one though only drops from Bojack Fucking Horseman in the Nest of Evil bonus dungeon.
>Lowish drop chance, and luck equips make you worse at combat stats.
>Can’t easily farm because every door closes behind you unless you want to reset the game.
>His lighting spell will utterly rape Jonathan if he gets caught in it, and while Charlotte can withstand it longer due to better magic defense, it’ll still wreck her if he gets the chance.
>Only saving grace is to get behind him when he casts, and thousand knives his ass into oblivion.
I do not like these Dawn of Sorrow enemies being in the bonus dungeon and bonus enemy levels of threat (FUCK the cave trolls). Mainly because I never played Dawn of Sorrow and thus haven’t had that good of experience dealing with them. At least the cast time reduction equip you get from beating Charlotte’s last quest is pretty useful.
Oh, and that spell Bojack drops? Not all that impressive for an endgame spell.
>Bojack has screen arcing lightning at his command that fries shit good and leaves a very good impression on the player.
>Your version of it is a llightning void that spawns in front of Charlotte, and while it lasts a while, it’s not the sort of game where you can use other spells while another is in effect (only one spell can be equipped at a time, and equipping another will cancel current effects).
At least Cocytus has excellent range.

Basically, Ys started out for disc based systems. This meant the benefits of CD media in a time most other systems were cartridge based. Ys benefited from this, especially in terms of audio quality (redbook audio, specifically), and while often ported around to other systems, was designed with the PC-Engine format in mind. This changed with Ys V, which was exclusive to the SFC at the time, and was considered a noticeable drop in quality. Cue no new entries until Ys VI eight years later.

> what happened with Ys V
It was literally the most hated game in the series because of the shit they changed from the previous games. The original release of Ys III wasn't all that well-liked either.
In Ys V, they use a more active combat, instead of the bump combat, where you have to press a button to swing your sword. For whatever reason, they also thought it a good idea to redo the magic system and require you to hold down a button to cast magic as well instead of just pressing it. Also your physical and magic skills leveled up separately for whatever stupid reason, whereas in literally every other Ys game you level up everything at once when you get a level up. Ys V did get a PS2 remake, but it also sucked horrible, horrible ass

Now I have all of this time for games, and I haven't really delved into a video game since 2012. I feel overwhelmed at my options. It's a good feeling to have, though.

Yeah, the NA version's sadly bugridden. Never had save corruption on my end, but plenty of shitty instances of subweapons freezing the game. And I still had one final subweapon to get for Jonathan, namely Defensive Stance from the Final Guard enemies. Bitch and a half to whittle down, but Axe Bomber apparently makes short work of them. Now I'm not sure if I want to grind all his subweapons to max or not; got most of them there thanks to the Master's Ring (worth the 200,000 it costs; Salamander, not so much), but Rocket Slash and the Richochet Rock are gonna suck to try to cap. Also I have no idea what all carries over to NG+ if I want to do it, so all this delaying beating the game might be for naught.
Going to go out and look for cheap vidya/animu tomorrow evening since I've got to make a run to the store anyhow. Hoping I might find something decent, though at this point there's not much they have that's within my desired price range that I don't already have or have no interest in.

Hey, thanks.
I've been in the NEET life before, back when the economy shit the bed and the recession happened. Three years of NEETdom from severance, unemployment and stimulus. Best three years of my llife.
I can't stay in it too long, sadly. I'm covered for the rest of this month, and then halfway into next.
The final straw was cumulative. The job was shit, I was massively underpaid for what I do. The final straw, funny enough, were performance reviews at the beginning of the month. I got my raise, but that raise was well below industry standard. My boss finally told me that there's no future for me at the company, and I'm wasting my time. He encouraged me to find work elsewhere, and that he'd look the other way while I did my job search. I said thanks, no thanks, and I quit. Depression and despair were sinking in, my performance was starting to dip. I knew the longer I stayed, the more I'd be burning my good will, so I quit while I was ahead.

Well, I'd guess it depends on what you're into. As far as JRPGs go, you might consider Mother 3 (which has become like the most popular fan-translation out there), Tales of Phantasia PS1 (Phanatsian Production's patch hacks in a technical ring to make the early game combat less of a slog), and if you've liked Ar Tonelico and hate NISA (as you should), AT2 got a full fan-retranslation because of how badly it got its shit fucked. Other genres, Ace Combat III got a fan-translation because the official release cut out the whole story and entire missions, and Castlevania-like Rusty is also in English. Really, there's just too much that has come out for a multitude of different systems over that many years. As stated, give RDHN a check; you can go by system and see what sounds good to you as it lists off names and genres.

Phantasia PS1 is currently (and HAS been since like 2007 when A0t's patch released) the most technically advanced version of Phantasia in English, barring the shitty moneyhungry iPort, which I'm not even sure is available anymore. Unfortunately, that means it's still a bit unrefined even compared to the next game released in its series (Tales of Eternia), which made combat a lot faster paced. The latter of the game's PSP ports, Tales of Phantasia X, made the combat more refined towards Eternia's level which would have been great to have in English, but A0t shitcanned everything a couple months back.

I'll just skim through whatever they're blabbing about, go straight for the download links and be on my merry way. So long as the cancer doesn't manifest directly into whatever I'm playing, then I'm good to go.
I just saw BoF2 in the list, funny enough. I think I'll peek at that, since a good translation can make all the difference in a game. FFVI is one of my absolute favorite games, but the Woolsey translation is a total wreck - but I loved the Sky Render translation. Sadly, it wasn't the devs say in it. And from what I've heard, their prior mobile series Square published for them wasn't bad, for mobile anyhow. It's just that they'd wanted to make a new entry for the series 20th birthday after like a decade of nothing, for the PS4 and/or Vita, and Sony was first alright with it, but then went "fuck that, this series belongs on phones now rather than the glorious PS4", thus they're stuck making a reboot for a new audience. And let me tell you: Sony, or Capcom, or anyone else that thinks their old RPG reboot will be successful on phones is liable to discover pretty fast that they don't have the branding Square does that keeps their mobile ports/remakes apparently popular east and west.

No, it's an SFC-to-PS1 remake, using an improved build of Destiny's engine. Has faster combat, an additional playable character, extra content, etc etc. Even the fan-translation quality, be it A0t or Phantasian Productions (Cless' goal being to provide an "official quality" patch, though it took him twelve fucking years), is much better than DeJap's "fucks like a tiger" and other liberties being taken with the SFC patch.
You're right though, that the SFC original was still impressive for what WolfTeam accomplished with it, both in the music and the voicing department.

You could always just pirate the Chronicles version on PC, or emulate the Complete version for PSP. It's pretty easy to emulate shit on PPSSPP amigo. The Chronicles release is pretty damned great though. You can choose between two different art styles for the sprites/artwork in the game, as well as 3 different music styles: the new Chronicles music which is kickass, the Complete music from the PSP version which ain't bad, and the original PC-88 music. Again, you've got two options: A0t put out a patch in I want to say 2007 because Cless was taking too long, but I think the version Phantasian Productions did is liable to be the better one. And again, the hacked in technical ring (granting Manual control) beats 8-10 hours of Semi-auto until you can find the first ring in the game on your own, giving another point in PP's favor. Shame he dropped out of Destiny 2, since apparently the reason he took so long to put his patch out (think it was 2012 or so) was due to severe depression and he wanted freedom. At least he came out and said that much though.

I don't think it was officially designed by Ghibli, but their designer used to work for Ghibli and went for that look.

That's what I meant by ghibli designs, not so much that ghibli worked on it directly ala Ni No Kuni.

>living with parents
I wish I could go back to living with my parents.
My father passed away three years ago, and my mother has been slowly deteriorating, she's become disabled and lost her eyesight. So that scenario stopped being an option a couple of years ago.
Makes me all the more envious. I would love to have that life back. I hope it never stops being awesome for you.

I'd probably get both and see which I prefer more within the first 20 minutes of each. I like for my translations to be 1:1 as much as possible, but I know that's easier said than done, due to context.

>I think it kind of just feels like being put up on a shelf, waiting.
I think being put up on a shelf is its own reward. Tucked away, safe and sound, and forgotten by the world. When there's nothing to wait for, everything happens as they happen, which can be nice in and of itself. Little surprises.

That surprised me a lot too. I'd always passed over the Ys games time and time again because the bump combat looked pretty lame, but god strike me down if it ain't fun. It helps the game keep this overall fast pace as you run through monsters and into towns then through more monsters in dungeons and into bosses. The action never really stops.

Hilarious. I never knew this was a thing. XSEED fixed it in the Chronicles release though.

It was before XSEED made their little deal with Falcom (which seems to be ended with Falcom seeking Aksys and NISA), where the series had been handled by anyone that wanted it. Konami had had it prior with Ys VI, and Atlus picked up Legacy of Ys for the DS. For the most part, the script seemed alright, but that botch REALLY stands out.

Narikiri Dungeon is a dungeon crawling spinoff, consisting of four games, wherein the main gimmick is costume equipped classes for the two protags (Narikiri Dungeon essentially translating to "Cosplay Dungeon): the original GBC one, two on the GBA, and an apparently damn good PSP remake of the first, which was set many years after Phantasia itself. Original played more like turn based combat with auto commands for your allies from what I can tell, so the PSP one is a huge step up. Is neat hearing official 8bit renditions of music that debuted as 16bit on the SFC though.

I think if you can get friendly with a pilot who is willing to let you fly with him you can probably mitigate a fair amount of the costs.

hopefully that'll be turned around now that NISA has completely botched Ys VIII. From what I understand, the NIS president was fuckin pissed that a branch of his OWN company totally mutilated a game series he holds near and dear to his heart. The dude still has a PC98 just to play the fucking original versions of Ys I and II. And now with NISA STILL fucking up the supposed "fixing" of Ys VIII, I can only pray this is the death toll for them.

I'm kind of scared of not having control over my life, I know if I had money I could fix a few of my problems, like a restraining order and a laser skin treatment for my scars and a gun.

NISA has sadly mastered the art of acknowledging low sales as still "successful" in most cases, barring maybe this and their butcheries of Mugen Souls and Criminal Girls, all of which obviously REALLY pissed westerners off. Point is, it wouldn't shock me if they just recoup the loss elsewhere and keep trucking as always, though perhaps Falcom will avoid using them in the future.

I think ND2 has a partial translation patch, and Kajitani did an April Fools about working more on it. Just be aware of possible spoilers, given that ND and RM are crossover subseries aimed at those that have played main games.

if that much happens, that'll be good enough for me. I don't know why they even considered not using XSEED anyway, like they have been, XSEED has been doing fantastic work with Falcom's games.

Here's how I see it: I spoke with an anon before that worked with either NG or TR, and he said that, at least on the publicity end, NISA were a bunch of cheap whores. And it really wouldn't surprise me if they were cheap hires as well. Like 8-4, they also have an extensive log of games they've handled that, without a Japanese dev/publisher looking more in depth on, is going to look good on the surface, like they know what they're doing to have stayed in business this long and have so many games done. Western sales are also likely just seen as extras compared to native Japanese ones as we're not usually (nor should we be) the main market they make something for, unless it's a company like Square that's embraced worldwide releases.
Beyond that, XSEED might just be somewhat pricy, and I heard Ys VIII had a fucking huge script, at least compared to most Ys. Might explain why they'd drop XSEED and look for someone cheaper for it.

Not having any control over your life is the worst possible outcome anyone can have. It's why I've been mortified at the thought of having kids. And after paying for an abortion, gave up on women and sex entirely. Fuck that shit.
