Randy's had his grubby fingers on the Duke Nukem license for about seven years now, and aside from Gearbox's shitty source port and how they lazily slapped Duke onto Bulletstorm, they haven't really done anything with it yet. I remember not to long after DNF's release they were talking about doing a prequel game, but I don't think anything's come out of that since. I sure as shit don't wanna see the series mutilated any further past the point of recognition than it already is, but it's pretty damned curious that they haven't tried making a new game with their (second?) biggest-name IP in seven years. What's the verdict here? Did DNF fuck up Duke's reputation to the point where they're too scared to release a new game? Are they too offended by the character to even try? Are they saving it as a last resort for when they inevitably go bankrupt?

From what I heard, DNF turned a profit. It may have been a critical failure, but not a financial one. There's obviously still a market for Duke out there. afaik Gearbox lost a lot of money on Battleborn. That was the ship they hitched their entire wagon on. I doubt they expected it to crash and burn the way it did.
They're probably working on new Borderlands shit rather than Duke. They should just license the IP out to other developers at this point to make new games. Which was what 3D Realms should've done with Forever and ended up doing with their spinoff games. Some of which were quite good. Notice a pattern here?

I'd have to imagine Gearbox has seriously considered doing this when they bought the IP but Randy had too much pride in his studio's ability to deliver that he was expecting Battleborn would make them so much money they could fund a hundred Duke games. Especially after the surprise success of Borderlands 2 (which they stole money from Aliens Colonial Marines to make). Listening to Randy's interviews about the game he was talking about it like it was going to be the next Team Fortress 2 or Counter Strike, a game the studio could just continue making for decades.
Not a lot of people are aware that Randy actually has a stake in OG Duke development. He worked on the Atomic edition when he first got into the game's industry. So I suspect that making his own Duke game is a pride thing. And I expect when it eventually comes out (if it does) it'll be a terrible bloated game full of sjw buzzwords that pleases nobody. my main problem with SW2 was that the focused on Co-op and diabio style loot and map randomization, this realy hurt the level design since all the maps feel the same since they have to be made in such a way that they can all fit together.
The Gunplay of SW2 difficulty balancing is actually better then SW1 (allot of weapons became useless on the hardest mode of SW1), but SW1 is better in terms of story, dialog, level design, and enemy design.
I hope they can learn and improve, but most people don't even criticize SW2 cause they enjoy the loot grind.

Another flaw not a lot of people are considering with a potentially new Duke game is John Saint John
JSJ was great in OG Duke 3D and some of the spinoffs. In OG Duke3D he makes Duke feel like he has grit. While he's dropping one liners he still feels somewhat genuinely angry at the aliens he's fighting. However after Forever he really drops the ball with voicing Duke. He makes him sound like a parody. Word from the grapevine says that the reason he doesn't voice Duke as great anymore is because when he worked on Duke 3D they got him to do a lot of takes and made him mostly talk out of one side of his mouth to really get the gritty angry voice out which made him uncomfortable. Whereas nowadays they just put him in the booth and let him do whatever.
It's to the point where I'd honestly say they need to recast him like they did with Al Pachino with Scarface the World is Yours. Which wasn't done because he didn't wanna do it, it's because he couldn't do the Tony Montana voice anymore so they got someone else.

I thinking more about it this way, If someone used to play Duke 3D back in the day, and they wanted to play it again on modern systems. If they're a buyfag Like me, then the only option is to give Gearbox money for their shit version. It's not common knowledge for most people how Shit Gearbox is so they don't know better. How to save Duke
1. Less memes, more quips.
Duke shouldn't be the type to repeat stupid internet memes like any random fat neckbeard off reddit. He should be witty enough to come up with his own one-liners that become memes. "Balls of Steel" was a great one. "Time to abort yer whole friggin' species" is another. They should just keep that coming and treat him like he's smart enough to come up with his own shit.
2. When it comes to badassery, DO, don't SAY
Duke should let his actions speak for how much of a badass he is, not himself talking about it. All the levels in the new Duke Game should be based entirely around this. Things like driving a motorcycle through the Nevada interstate while shooting down alien ships with rocket launchers, and then doing a ramp launch off them while they go down in flames. Motorcycle levels should feel fun and involving, like the landmaster levels in Star Fox 64 but with more stuff blowing up.
3. Give him a dog.
Duke should have a dog that helps him out in some missions. It follows him around and fetches or digs up items, or it can be instructed to tear out the throat of a nearby enemy, sort of like the dog in Dead to Rights. This dog has to be freed from a cage in the level but once you free him you have him available to help you whenever you like.
Make it a type of brute-looking alpha dog that would trigger the hell out of soyboys, like a pit bull or St. Bernard.
4. More cool weapons.
The devastator is the example of how all the guns in Duke should be made. Just really powerful and ridiculous-looking guns. Serious Sam has the right idea. Even low-level weapons like Sam's dual magnums have infinite ammo and feel super powerful to shoot at stuff with. Duke should up the ante with the crazy guns. Homing rocket launchers, chargeable sustained lasers, miniguns, literal missile launcher pods that Duke himself yanked straight off the wing of an F15, a gun that shoots an actual miniature nuke. Listen to what the 14 year old in your head would think is an awesome gun and just run with it.
