I played through Celeste, it was pretty meh. Gameplay was sort of okay, but the story was absolutely shit. The mountain is a metaphor for overcoming depression (I think) and they are very clear that everyone in the game has there own mental problems. One of the npc's is a dude from Seattle that likes to take selfies all the time, so no future proofing there. Nearly all characters are unlikable, except for cynical grandma. Gameplay, like I said, was passable, because the overall movement feels pretty nice but when you hit a dash reset cube or an enemy charges at you, you get enter this weird state of hitstun that really breaks the pace of the levels. Music was nice, but the whole thing gets pulled down by an inconsistent artstyle. The game itself is 7.4(?) bit but the icons, conversation text and images and the effects are high resolution.

Shadow Tactics was a real surprise. I think the only thing wrong with it is that it needs even more maps that are even harder. There were plenty of maps for sure, but after you beat all the challenges you really learned to utilize the characters in a way which made me want even further challenges.

It's creative alright, though often far from polished. Take the first stage. It starts as a classic Contra zako rush with randomly spawning zakos everywhere interspersed with tougher snipers, which is also the hardest part of the stage. After that you fight a spinning fire drone which you can defeat with no effort by standing at the right side of the screen and shooting to your left with your laser. After that you get the cyclops mini-boss which after an excruciatingly long technically-not-a-cutscene jumps towards you and is damageable, but by standing directly under him and shooting your laser in his eye you can kill him without having to move at all. After that it's a fucking ez platforming segment for some reason? Then the boss itself is peanuts where you can point-blank him as much as you like while only having to crouch, and his second phase is easily dealt with with a homing weapon and having to slide occasionally when he does that poorly telegraphed melee attack. It's a weird ass stage with no thematic or mechanical coherence, and not really fun to replay through on repeat playthroughs, largely because there is no RNG past the initial zako rush to shake things up and the stage itself is rather easy to execute once you get past some of the trial 'n error tidbits. I have to dance out of boredom until the cyclops decides to show up. Just look at this shit. It looks cool, but if you are going to replay this over and over in the pursuit of an 1cc it's going to bore you to death and you're bound to just skip this one in practice runs.

The motor cycle stage after this one is also nearly identical in its weird structure, where it starts off with a RNG-filled fun zako rush, then you have to kill some guy chasing you on foot while carrying a nuke. Afterwards comes the spider boss, and if you tell me you actually managed to avoid his shots the first time you encountered him, you're bullshitting. Animation telegraphing shouldn't come after the shot. The battleship fight after that is also lulz since you can stand to the right side of the screen if it moves to the right for a safe spot and shoot its core without being shot at. The boss after that looks pretty, though I don't appreciate perspective fuckery in games or bosses constantly making themselves undamageable with no way to avoid or speed up their invuln state.

I don't know why you decide to jerk off Hard Corps when Contra III is superior level design wise since it doesn't constantly forsake challenge for the sake of flashiness. Hard Corps is good fun later on, but it wants to show off the graphical capabilities of the Genesis too often rather than pose a consistent challenge often devoid of RNG to keep things spicy, even though randomly spawning zakos are the bread and butter of Contra (though the homing weapons in Hard Corps are brutally overpowered and since you can always carry a homing weapon with you here any zako rush part of a stage is often rendered redundant).

There's barely any asset reuse involved, for one. Each boss is wildly different from others in terms of the platforms involved, projectile/attack behavior, boss weakpoint placement, the general set-up of the fight (visually and mechanically), pink distribution, and the occasional gimmick involved. It actually uses RNG to a great extent to create a consistent and more involving challenge instead of being pure memo or trial 'n error, outside the occasional poor random pink distribution. The bosses in Cuphead challenge your moveset to the fullest extent, so to speak.

I'm sorry anon, I'm having a bad day and didn't feel like typing out a bunch of shit. I'm just going to type what I like/dislike about it without trying to form it into a coherent list.

Heat Signature is basically the best space bounty hunter game I've ever played. It's heavily focused on building a characters legacy while you work towards that characters personal goal (for example "Capture the man who killed my brother.") and then retiring when it's finished. That personal goal is basically always a suicide mission though so you'll be going through a lot of characters before you get one that actually finishes their goal and is able to retire. Successfully retiring allows you to pick a piece of gear from that characters inventory to name after them.

As you're building up various characters there is a side narrative where you play hand made levels that basically work like puzzles. For example you might be placed on a ship with nothing but a shield and an explosive and be forced to figure out how to complete your task.

You have a fuck ton of neat gadgets like teleporters of many varieties, time slowing devices, shields that reflect bullets, a device that swaps your position with an enemy, various traps like one that can teleport enemies outside of the ship to suffocate, and plenty of explosives. All of this gear and the ability to pause the action with the spacebar heavily encourages improvisation. You can walk onto a ship with 3 armor piercing pistols, a katana, a wrench, and a position swapper and make that work via pauses.

There are melee and ranged weapons of non lethal and lethal variety. You can go loud or you can go quiet. Different ship types like one that heals wounds so if you get launched out of the ship you're raiding you'll be patched up without much damage. Or one that can smash into the side of ships and kill the crew inside because they got sucked out into space.

The main things I dislike about this game is how predictable the mission structure for the non puzzle missions can get and how heavily the main game relies on procedural generation. I think the game could have been a lot stronger if it was all hand made like the puzzle missions.

I'm sad to read about how pozzed it was, I literally just completed the game like 2 days ago. I noticed it at first with theo, an extremely unlikable hipster who, if he wasn't black, would have bled soy. That being said the entire story is easily skippable and 100% unneeded. I'm pretty sure after my first instance of running into theo I skipped the dialogue for everything except the instances with dark girl.

The gameplay on the other hand was great, I really enjoyed how it gently taught you new things right up until the very last level in the game, learning those things broke the rest of the game open letting you play it much more fluidly.

I really do think that the person who designed the game part of the game, and the people who designed the "other parts" really didn't agree with each other at all. I remember reading a quote from the person who made the movement or levels or something and, in reference to the game breaking assist mode, absolutely hated having it because he spent so much time balancing the levels to be appropriate for players to not only accomplish, but to learn as they played. But then they add a mode that lets you literally walk on spikes and fly in the air and doesn't even disable achievements. Its pretty fucking stupid. Regardless if you ignore all that and just go into it not thinking about any of that shit, its a pretty good game who's final moments will give you that "This is impossible" And then 20 mins later you beat it good feeling.

It's a very fun game, and got my moneys worth (if you count 1hr/$1) but there's way too little content and most of the content that is there is ridiculously broken. Like with the Offworld Angel pod, almost objectively the best pod, you are pretty much invincible and makes White Knuckle Extractions the best way to save the hostage. Mods would fix this

If that's the deal I know about you get, a free devkit and up to $10k for timed exclusivity, as in you can launch on any platform you want but it has to come to xbone first and you're not eligible to it if you're already launched on another platform unless you make a new special edition of your game, I don't recall the exact minimum delay but it's rather short a matter of weeks at most.
