On the contrary. Newer coins, like Ethereum, were developed specifically to be mined with GPUs instead of ASICs. Even though this is true, ASICs designed specifically for it have been released recently.
In fact, most cryptocurrencies can be mined with GPUs rather profitably, but only when the coin hasn't been mined much. As time goes on and more coins are mined, difficulty (calculations needed to mine one coin) goes up too. GPUs eventually mine less and ASICs are needed in other to stay profitable. There are exceptions, like a coin that is mined with hard drives.
>don't require GPUs or any other kind of specialized hardware.
Don't conflate GPUs with specialized hardware. ASICs are quite specialized, since they are only used for mining certain coins and nothing else. GPUs are used for more than just gaming.
