If a developer releases a bad game, what is the best way to unfuck it?

Release patches/updates until it isn't shit? Re-use all of the assets and attempt it again in another game? Or completely scuttle the project, release all of the assets for free use and simply hope that a better game emerges from it, even if it doesn't fully match the original vision?

e59847 No.14693327

Ensure people stop playing the shitty version, take it back off the shelves or off the storefront, apologize (maybe refund) and say it will be ready to go soon and make sure it actually is fucking fixed the next time

Patch it, it's a privilege of modern day vidya that they can do it, and most refuse to pay enough attention to the community to do it.

No VTM:B is an out and out bad game. The fanpatch makes it playable and that's important as an artifact of what we could have had but to truly fix it you'd have to rip out the entire combat system and the character build/XP system and the last 1/4 of the game. Honestly even the writing falls flat towards the end.

Basically all it has is 3/4 of a good story.

While I agree with the rest of your points I'd say only the boss fights and the sewers are bad which is more like a sixth of the overall game. I mean you're saying 25% and that's way too high. Also you forgot to mention the top-tier soundtrack.

That wasn't OP's question though. Ideally all developers would have the motivation, time, and resources necessary to guarantee their product lives up to whatever the ideal is for their creative vision. We don't live in a perfect world though, so sometimes things don't go right. Sometimes developers run out of money or time, or simply stop giving a fuck. This being the case, the question is natural. To answer this question, I'd say yes, patching games after they're released is something more developers should do to handle solvable issues, and anything that's too big to cover or not worth changing can be saved for the sequel if the game deserves it.

The Sabbat Hotel was also shit and it wasn't a boss fight. Actually any area where you have to fight more than a handful of enemies sucks. You're right about the OST being amazing I'll give you that. Basically to fix the game take the first 3/4 of the writing and the soundtrack and put it in an entirely new game made by non-retarded developers.

>The Sabbat Hotel

I forgot about that but it's in the last section of the game and it ends in a boss fight so it pretty much is a boss fight anyway.

Why waste time trying to do the developers' job? And to fix a shitty game nonetheless?

Abandon the game and go play something good.

You cannot fix a bad game.

A bad game is bad forever.

If a developer releases a bad game, that means the problem is rooted in from the design process already, and you can't simply patch it and it's magically fun.

Don't mistake bad games for broken/buggy games. Broken/Buggy games are games that may be fun, but needs improvements that aren't very drastic/major.

You can play broken/buggy games and say: "This game is fun, except".

When a developer makes games, they better make it fun starting from the design process.

Also, that quote about late games over bad games.

>If a developer releases a bad game, what is the best way to unfuck it?

You don't. What you can do is not give money or attention to the person who made said bad game to keep this type of habit from being profitable.

The VTMB team was changed completely at the last 1/4 stretch of the development. You can thank (((Activision))) for that. They see a good RPG and wants cowadoody, they were fucking idiots since then.

The game was good until you finish the Mansion area. That 1 area is more spooky then any full on Horror game. Then the rest of the game is shit.

>>14693324

You can't unfuck a truly bad game, because a truly bad game is not "fun concept with a hitch in the realization", it's bad in concept.

Case in point: the entire survivalcraft genre, where the concept is "virtual camping trip except without the joy of tasting fire-cooked food, and also there's zombies/dinosaurs/other players trying to kill you", which is less fun than just going on a real-life camping trip.

>what is a one size fits all solution for all bad videogames

Fixing a broken window and fixing a collapsed house require completely different things.

Most bad games COULD be fixed, but as other anons have said; if someone releases a bad game then some part of the development team is the problem and you need to replace it or else the problems with the game will never go away. You need to dig deep into the game and pull out the garbage and put in things that may radically change the game's design, and I don't think I've ever seen that happen before in my life. Some games are so irredeemably shit that it would genuinely be easier to start from scratch and make another game that's similar. Reusing assets isn't going to work though because it'll look like you're selling the same game again.

Modders don't know shit about fixing games properly and you can count the number of games properly "fixed" by mods with one hand, and even out of those most are just using the engine to do something else rather than fixing what the game was meant to be. That said, if the game only has minor flaws then mods can very well fix the game.

05e759 No.14695659

If it could be fixed by a patch, it probably wasn't that bad.

82f508 No.14695695

The problem with fixing a bad game is that the developers need a change of mindset or priorities to make that happen, and that sort of change is very rare indeed. Even when devs acknowledge the issue and attempt to fix it, they are usually too far up their own ass to make a fix that works.

75d555 No.14695921

Really depends on the game. If it's something like Gauntlet Dark Legacy for the Gamecube, it's a matter of patching out all the bugs and glitches.

If it's a game like Fallout or Dungeon Keeper and it's flawed at a fundamental level, there really isn't much you can do to "fix" it without making a new game entirely.

Open sores it and edit its flight+damage modeling+balancing .cfg files.

It's a fucking shame this game is helmed by F2P slavs, its six gorillion high quality assets coupled with a fairly advanced engine disregarding Nvidia's kikeworks crap could make for an amazing autisim with comparatively little effort.

You mean the one that introduces new bugs, arbitrarily replaces content with new amateur equivalents, and strips away the game's iconic sound design?
