Oh my god was it ever.

Bo was more memorable than the MC though. Mostly for his hilariously over the top stereotypical US army black guy with a big gun character.

Cain was memorable as fuck too. If only because he was a French robot and chatty as fuck.

Overall that game was delightful. A real hidden gem. The gunplay may on the surface be fairly generic third person shooter fare but the enemy destruction and damage system is just so delightfully satisfying.

There's lots of good examples from Chrono Trigger, the Nus, the three Prophets, hell even the floating head that runs the minigame tent at the millennial fair.

Also for some reason I was always fascinated by namingway on the ps1 re-release of FF4 as a kid. Also Matoya from the first final fantasy.

Oot is also a good one, there's the Lon-Lon ranchers, the jogging man, the dancing couple in hyrule castle town, etc.

I think nonlinear sandbox/rpg games are best for this type of thing, they let kids and autists fuck around in the same area for hours and hours when the actual content of the area only lasts a half hour

Komaeda's really weird. Very hard to pin down on alignment charts or anything like that. He mainly acts like an antagonist but also isn't one in many ways, and doesn't think of himself as one. He threatens the safety and stability of the group but does so by taking advantage of the rules of the game. Not to mention his status as the foil to Naegi, with his name, voice, talent, appearance, HOPE, etc all made to set them parallel to each other.

Honestly I don't blame them.

You brought that concept to me and asked "how much should we spend on marketing?"

I would tell you not to bother with anything more than the bare minimum because such a bland and generic concept in a market overflowing with third person shooters made by companies a lot better at making them than whoever made Binary Domain, is not going to do well and one must wonder why you saw fit to develop it to begin with as it is essentially wasted money.

Because lets face it. It was a terrible business decision on the part of SEGA.

The third person controls and cover mechanics were clunktacular. The level design was mostly corridors with enemys advancing menacingly towards you, making the few open areas somewhat perplexing to the player.

Even the writing was generally subpar. While it did bring forth a lot of interesting stuff, far too much of it wound up being invested into a really lousy love story that felt forced and left most of the narrative points unresolved or unexplored in any meaningful depth.

That game was saved by two things.

Some amazingly well done characters. Simple but clear and consistent, unfortunately a real rarity these days as everyone tries to make their characters complex but lack the time to write a complex character. For another example of good well written but simple characters look to Bulletstorm.

The second thing being the amazing enemy destruction. Fighting the enemies in Binary Domain is clunky but satisfying. Every enemy type is easy to discern and can be picked apart in a satisfying and surprisingly tactical manner. If a swarm of infantrybots are heading towards you then shooting out their legs is not only viable but very useful. Few games really bring forward that room for strategy in how you approach individual enemies and groups of enemies.

I loved Binary Domain. Played through it twice even. Even got the "true" ending where Cain comes back to save the day.

And I will always call it underrated. But SEGA were right not to expect much from it.

The majority of characters in Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines come into mind, because the game doesn't really have an antagonist and its an important story point that basically every quest giver is fucking with the player in some way.

There will never be a character as big a bro, or as Stoic as Dak'kon from Planescape Torment.

Lucas Bertone the friendly car mechanic and Vincenzo (you get the "new toys" from him). Both of them just colour characters, but damn they are very lovable.

Anyway, this guy. You probably forgot about him... Unless you found the secret area with Blockhead Grande, in which case he's the biggest, most annoying mother fucker in all of video games.

This guy. His intense hatred for elves, tendencies for torture and the fact that the mission where you kill him is hard as balls made him very memorable.

I still cringe a little every time I see him.
