Will RPGs where you can create an entire party of custom characters ever make a comeback? Most of the pre-made party members in modern games are so bland that I'd rather make my own.

No. Why would that be weird? That's half the fun. Choosing builds that fit their personalities, giving them quirks that you act out during fights…that's what a roleplaying game is supposed to be, anon.

Wasteland 2 allowed you to do that, but I never liked the concept in narrative heavy games. It's more interesting when you have a party of distinct personalities that react to events differently. It's fine in dungeon crawlers though.
And as others have said, Nips have been making plenty of those in the past years.

Absolutely nothing wrong with that. As for your topic, Japan still makes dungeon crawlers or wizardry clones pretty often. Have you tried the Elminage series or Etrian Odyssey? How about Class of Heroes or Wizardry: Tale of the Forsaken Land? I don't know if something like this will ever make a come back, but I know there's plenty of RPGs to pick and choose from.

To me it makes it harder to immerse myself in my own character when I create a whole bunch of NPC's from the same blank canvas, if it's a new game it's also really overwhelming to be expected to plan out an entire party before even starting the game.
If the game doesn't want to write personalities for your companions, give it a system where you can recruit/create new party members at certain story progression points where you unlock more party slots or something.
If it's more of a dungeon crawler like Grimrock rather than an RPG I can be more forgiving since they tend to be light on dialogue and story elements regardless.
I think it might have been Icewind Dale that I dropped because it wanted me to make 6 party members or some bullshit right at the start. I might remember it wrong though.
Playing through Neverwinter Nights right now and I like how it places most focus on my own character. KotOR 1 and 2 do it differently but also in an enjoyable way.>>14689793

The story I'd imagined for my party really made the immersion of the game much greater. I did this with my Wizardry 6-8 party.

You use the little icon on the corners of the portraits to choose actions. The walk icon at the bottoms lets you walk in battle. You click the circle in the bottom right to change positions. I think thats it. Press enter to start a round.
