c7ba0c No.14677511

What are your favorite "unwinnable" boss fights, /v/? I've always had a soft spot for Vile in MMX and was kinda bummed that the PSP remake changed it into him landing a cheap shot in a cutscene rather than just beating your ass in gameplay. It was a little more atmospheric that way.

I hate all of them, there's no shittier mechanic than pounding on a boss for 30 minutes and then realizing you're supposed to lose except maybe giving up and finding out you're not supposed to lose

2efb5a No.14677950

>>14677853

the best design is having a boss fight you are suppose to lose, but the devs put in a secret ending incase you do beat the boss.

>>14677950

The DS Ninja Gaiden game did that. If you were able to to defeat the Red Dragon in the beginning you unlocked and were able to play as Momiji for the rest of the game.

I'd prefer if you could beat Vile during the rematch instead of having it go exactly the same. But no, Zero had to have his special moment. It's like X didn't grow at all between the intro stage and Sigma's fortress.

This is the only acceptable way to make an "unwinnable" boss fight.

I remember this fight from my childhood. Bowser knocks you straight down, straight out of outer space. And throughout the game, my kid mind was wondering how the hell Mario was gonna get back up there.

fada6f No.14678600

>>14677511

I like the seemingly unwinnable ones that do actually have a different outcome if you manage to beat that which you weren't supposed to. Some being doable on a first playthrough, while others might as well require NG+, but it does make for a better idea than just "you have to lose".

>>14677950

Tales has been good about that at points, but then you have the boss fight against Hubert in Graces, where the devs apparently couldn't think of an alternate way to kick Asbel out of town other than getting some INSTANT BALLS to the face. Even if you whittle his health down to 0, it just goes to "???" because you aren't allowed to win. There is thankfully an optional rematch later, but still.

c7ba0c No.14682052

>>14677950

I can agree with that.

f8b394 No.14682309

>>14677853 I wanted to reply to OP but i'll just have you instead, there is a very cleaver way to do it if it's implemented by relying on the story, as happens while fighting a Belmont on Castlevania Curse of Darkness

The fight was like climbing a mountain barehanded with nothing to assist you and i got my shit rekt even though i spent time evolving my pokemons with crystals that the mobs dropped… rarely also chuging potions as if i was dealing with an optional boss, then after i git gud by using the golem correctly, i chirped enough HP for the cutscene to happen… then i was reminded that MC was out of comission for years… also, despite MC's strenght being comparade to Death before taking said break, i'm still fighting a Belmont which explains why i can't just curbstomp him like i did with the other bosses that crossed my path

a592b6 No.14683318

The best example of an unwinnable battle that you can actually "win" at is Rondo of Swords. You're supposed to just run, but for every one of the bosses you beat you get one of the best items in the game, and leave the first stage near level 20. Not sure why you'd do it, though, you'd shitstomp the rest of the gamee.

>first half of game deals with robo-imperialists take over floating islands

>mc part of team that fights these guys

>3 (or 4 i cant remember) boss fights against enemies with technology far, far superior to yours

>unique combat system with no unlimited items, meaning that you dont accidentally waste anything important

>enemies weak to obvious element, and deal obvious elemental damage, so you can counter them easily

>boss still is difficult

>ends before it gets irratating

it's more of a puzzle than a boss fight, now that i think about it.

but thats not the best part

>last half of game you go back to the islands and fight all these bosses again

>you can kill them

> if you don't, you get optional cutscene with them

>if you do, you get the best items in the game

>cathartic as fuck

This guy is a prime example

I also likes how you KNEW it was supposed to be pointless because your character is just a random villager from a fishing village and fighting him is pretty much the first thing you do in the game and your only equipment then is a damn sword.

He then whoops your ass then gives you a reason to go on a grand adventure to kill the guy.

That was a great moment that was kind of ruined for me personally because my class skill setup for him was sub optimal to the point I needed to use items.

The part after where his daughter uses its was strong too. Very underappreciated entry to the series and my personal favorite.

Every time I see something like this or a top 10 boss fights, this fucking guy is brought up. And I hate him because I hate this game because I hate it's music. He makes me think of this game's music. I hate him. Look at that stupid fucking Star Wars armor. The fucking super fighting robot he is making his robot hold. He is a robot. Fuck these god damn robots.

Also you could argue the final level in Halo Reach. It isn't a boss fight but you kill enemies in waves until you die. I like segments like this.

8983bf No.14687767

Lufia 2 Gades. Sure the fight was "unwinnable" at your level. But if you grinded enough you get to defeat him and take his sword. And then promptly kicks your ass in the cutscene but hey you get an op sword out of it.

I prefer when the boss fights are "unwinnable" and you need to lose to proceed but you can actually win it with enough skill, grinding, or just plain old luck, then something special happens.

Disgaea 2 had some of those.

In Super FUCKING Metroid, you can beat Ridley's ass in the opening, but all it does is make him drop the Metroid, then pick it up again before leaving.

First Bowser encounter from Paper Mario 1, as its impossible to win without cheating and thus lacks the ambiguity other scripted loss fights can have. There's really no place for scripted losses past the intro of a game.

Least favorite is in PMD Explorers of Sky, during the first extra chapter, as you can win it but you get the same scene as if you lost. All winning does is force you to waste valuable resources.

e92485 No.14688878

You can actually win anon, but it takes the right skills and moveset.
