Let's talk about video games that focus on adventuring, JRPGs and WRPGs are both really good at this with Baldur's Gate and Golden Sun being good examples of games that focus mostly on the act of adventure, although I'm sure that there are many non-RPG examples. What are your favourite games to play when you feel like adventuring /v/?

0d659c No.14677074

GTA San Andreas was an odd Western non-RPG non-fantasy example of a game that gave me a sense of adventure, people shit on its storyline but it had a good atmosphere of an adventure with the whole plot of going from city to city while visiting the countryside in between, I expected that out of V but sadly there was only one city and a boring countryside map that was underutilized and open entirely from the start.

Dragon's Dogma does a great job of making its small world feel a lot bigger. Smart quest design/game design means you ideally spend a couple hours in the first area and then move on to the city.

dd5481 No.14677113

The Etrian Odyssey games. Also the Trails games, while not really having a lot of traditional adventuring, for some reason give me an adventuring feel. Probably because you get to go all over a country and see the different cities and explore. Legend of Grimrock, mostly the second. And Okami of course.

>people shit on its storyline

>Game has extremely memorable characters that people endlessly quote more than a decade after its release

>Game spawned memes that only became more enjoyable decades after release

>Story has really great character development and keeps you interested throughout

>story ends in a very satisfying way

Why would anyone complain about GTA San Andreas's story?

>Well deserved retroactive hate for all niggers.

the main character in San Andreas is great because he's clearly a poor black person who's dumb ("I don't need to go to no college to study no accounting") but he's extremely likable and has some of the best dialogue in the game. The character doesn't feel forced or fake like most ethnic characters do today. Rockstar was really great at writing ethnic/minority characters who were really likable. (See Niko Bellic.)

did we play the same game? CJ is the worst GTA main character in the entire series. He's unlikable and boring, a whiny bitch.

It really picks up once you get to Los Venturas and back to Los Santos. I remember when I first played the game the sheer scope of the world opening up after Los Santos was what kept me going.

It's mostly IV obsessed autists who hate everything that isn't overly dark and brooding. And IV was pretty damn good, flawed but it was like a pretentious art film with admirable qualities. I've yet to see a video game city as detailed as IV's Liberty City.

1e24f2 No.14677922

>>14677827

>if I keep insisting the whiny bitch that is CJ is interesting without any counter-argument it'll become true

No, it will never be true. Throughout the entire game he's a demotivated faggot with no interest in achieving his own goals, complaining at every turn, and practically just having solutions to his problems be dropped in front of him. He has no drive to succeed and barely even knows what he wants. He's a cuck and every word out of his mouth is a dripping faucet of stupidity. This is coming off of a motivated, pissed off asshole who wants to take over an entire city, a smart talking dickhead who generates jealousy from his partner and has to deal with real problems from his past. Someone who starts with almost nothing and builds his way up through a system pitted against him.

Far more interesting than a faggot nigger who gets bullied by the cowwupt poweece and gets all his solutions dropped into his lap. He's a fucking busta.

It looks aesthetically detailed but in terms of being mechanically detailed Saints Row 2's was much more interesting.

>Tons of interior locations

>hidden interior locations

>All mission specific interiors are openly explorable. Including the villain's office you confront him at the end of the game

>NPCs all do their own thing and interact with the world. Like you see joggers, people flying planes and landing them, people fishing on piers etc.You can just walk into an alleyway and see dudes throwing dice

>NPCs all fit different social classes and were automatically generated using the character creator you use to make the player. You can dress up as every pedestrian in the game.

>Every later game made NPCs dull and lifeless like they fade into the background.

There's the Sea Dogs games, right now playing Age of Pirates 2 and it's great.

>>14676986

Another JRPG with a great sense of adventure is Grandia, the game begins with the protagonist, who lives in a world where everything has been explored, deciding to go on an adventure to the literal end of the world, to see if there is anything beyond that. Along the way he meets all sorts of characters and has all sorts of hijinks, like stopping a forced marrage or exploring a ghost ship. When he finally scales the wall at the end of the world, he finds out that there is so much more beyond that.

Hell, even the main theme screams of ADVENTURE.

Grandia and Skies of Arcadia are noted as being adventure-heavy in vibe. Nostalgia tries to follow through on rewarding exploring (along with an airship focus like SoA), but it's mostly average. Great world map though. Wild Arms series (mostly 1, 2, 3, and ACF) are similar to Golden Sun in terms of exploration, albeit utilizing Zelda-esque dungeon gear to explore rather than spells with non-combat utility. All fall under JRPGs though, which you've already noted.

I just want some detailed boat sailing mechanics at LEAST Sea Of Thieves level but with the big ass world like Pirates. Also the sword combat wasn't good in Pirates.

Someone needs to make the ultimate pirate game with realistic swashbuckling, shanteys and tunes, lots of adventure with crazy islands and dungeons, custom ships and good sea combat. Has to be multiplayer of course.
