I know this might only be tangentially relevant but I've been attending loads of industry related talks the past few days and one pattern that kept coming up is how valve ruined pretty much every indie friendly publishing label with direct. Small games are becoming completely unviable to produce or fund because shit is nearing android play store levels of bad and small games can stay afloat only by sheer luck of the draw. Every single low to mid range game nowadays has by far the least amount of sales on steam.

I've heard a few mixed things and from what I could devise from it, he's the boss, but pretty much everyone in the company can do anything at a whim. This means approving, removing, editing, adding, whatever when it comes to literally any piece of software managed by Valve. I imagine it was some guy working on steam store approval/moderation, saw it, and removed it. Then it became a PR disaster, and if it didn't, or wasn't a big enough deal, it would have never made it to the platform.

This isn't about the OP but I've been waiting for a steam thread to post this a while, forgive spelling or grammatical mistakes I wrote this half-drunk.
Valve is a company with no structure or business plan, no yearly goals.
Gabe created a company that would of course be created by a fat autist fuck who got into programming.
Valve is not publicly traded, Gabe has full control of shares. Meaning Gabe unless he hired CEO's to run his company, everything is up to him.
Even then those CEO's are still employee's of Gabe's, so if he makes certain rules about how the company is ran the CEO's have to work around those rules.
From what I've learned about working for Valve, is that people are grouped and allowed to pitch an idea or plan to improve something.
They then work on the plan.
Like google its all about "happy employees" which in reality is a symptom of a monopoly or lack of competition.
They have money on tap.
Or they did.
See the thing with Valve is that it was highly profitable in the beginning as most games had smaller file sizes, there were less games but more demand, back when AAA was king, and always selling for $60 dollars for a game.
Then things progressed, games especially AAA (steams bread and butter) grew larger and larger.
On top of that a plethora of sites that allowed customer reviews on top of Steam's customer review system made word of mouth stronger in regards to shitty AAA games hurting revenue, Steam wants games to sell well, so they can get their cut.
So Steam continued to get smaller revenue and on top of that had to spend more and more on upkeep to sustain their digital purchases.
So Steam turned to early access, (drawn from the green light system) which allowed them to produce a ton of titles.
This was initially very profitable with Day Z, Rust, Ark selling a ton of units.
However like the Nintendo WII they ended up over-saturating the market where Steam's game list only went to 10 pages of product, the steam game list is now a endless abyss of shovelware, ripoff, games using stolen access.
On top of that Unity capitalizing off early access on PC allowed anyone to purchase models and sell a game which led to a ton of people mimicking the game of the month.
It cost valve money to allow a game to be purchased, and if the game is cheap, file heavy and sells only minimally Valve might actually lose money.

Paid Mods.
This was the next scheme from Valve to turn more of a profit to offset their raising upkeep.
We all know how that went.
So Valve is churning a profit, but the raising upkeep grows and grows.
On top of that it has a child like work philosophy that has hundreds if not thousands of employees simply leeching off the company without producing anything of worth.
The minute an actual competitor arrives Steam is dead.
The best way for that to happen, is someone to mock how Steam came about, make a wildly popular game, release it on your own platform, make more popular games on same platform.

Years ago Steam created new EULA terms which changed all existing consumer rights to rental rights.
Consumer rights being a purchase to view or use a product, which can't be overturned as they are dependent only on the moment they are agreed upon.
Rental rights which is an ongoing contract that can be terminated based on the distributor at any time.
They got people to agree because they would lock you out of your account unless you agreed to the new terms, which is illegal, but because its videogames no regulative body ever checked.
Now since its 7 years past its way beyond the statute of limitations so they can't be sued for it now.
That's why steam is shit.
They've tied your account and games together, always present is the gun which contains the bullet, that on it is engraved

Seems like too grand an undertaking. Not sure if procedural generation will benefit a game like that, either. Maybe something like the format of Subnautica would work better, where the world design is already set.
That said, I'd definitely love to see a skinwalker game done right. I love /k/ innawoods stories to death.

The main issue with VR if you don't mind me saying is a distinct lack of actual games. Really the only thing I can think of that VR did well was watching an anon marry his waifu while everyone in chat shitposted. Beyond that it's been glorified tech demos. In order to make VR more than just an overpriced meme, they need to have games that make people want to put down the money to buy the things. If someone can start using gyro's or some other method to simulate movement, you could get some really immersive things. Until then you're stuck with overpriced plastic.
